Why we chose ebooks •  Strategic plan from BCIT to move towards innovative teaching •  Desire to decrease our carbon footprint •  Bring curriculum to the bedside to improve patient care •  Provide more engaging curriculum to meet the student of

2020 needs •  Leverage mobile technology students are bringing with them

Choosing a platform •  Started off looking at devices

•  E ink devices •  Tablets

•  Myriad of choices made it difficult •  Needed a platform that would work in distance education,

classroom and clinical •  Decided looking at technology first was incorrect


•  Looked at our development process •  Wanted a technology that did not change our process •  Easy for faculty to use •  Did not add to development time •  Educationally appropriate •  Provided easy course management


What we looked at •  Adobe Products

•  Indesign and Acrobat Pro •  Large learning curve •  Few resources on campus •  Limited faculty engagement •  Took more time than paper


•  ePub creators •  Looked at CSS/XML for creating epubs •  Created fancy pdf’s but not very interactive •  Limited on campus resources •  Increased development time and learning curve

•  Free programs like Calibre •  Created nice epubs but not interactive as we wanted


•  Everything we tried would work on any device but officially none of the devices were supported on campus

•  Most of students 60-70% used Apple devices in class, clinical or personal use.


Looked at iAuthor •  Provided a less steep learning curve •  Interactive HTML5 widgets built in •  Fit well into our educational philosophy •  Able to use existing content and move it to iAuthor so did not

change development process •  Free program—only faculty time •  Met strategic objects at the institute and program level.


Challenges •  Apple device in a MS campus

•  Limited support through official channels •  Tied to single device •  Apple licensing agreement •  Copyright


Pilot Project •  40 + student pilot project with first course through to first

clinical experience (2.5 courses) •  6 faculty developed •  Less than 4 months from development to delivery to students •  Purchased 100 ipads for student and faculty use •  Ipads loaned through library services •  Curriculum deployed using iTunesU


Development Team Changed •  In paper

•  Faculty and expert reviewers •  Template experts and printing services •  Bookstore for purchasing and inventory management

•  In ebook format •  Multimedia designers •  Faculty, expert reviewers •  Instructional designers (IDC) for project management and

education process


Deployment •  In paper

•  once printed went to bookstore •  Students paid and received materials •  Canada Post and courier services

•  Ebook •  Different process—seemed complicated at first but ended

up to be easier and less involved •  Ebooks loaded into iTunesU as non-affiliated instructor •  Code given to students


More deployment •  Very collaborative—needed to engage with more resources •  Library was integral to success •  ETS at BCIT assisted with testing of deployment profiles •  ITS placed more AP in classroom to handle extra wifi load •  Faculty orientated students •  Faculty provided ipad/ebook support


Library •  Used library as lending service as they have experience and

resources available for lending •  Used Mac Mini and configurator to provision ipads

•  Ipads deployed using partially supervised device •  Installed profiles for wifi, password protection, app tracking •  Installed popular apps and required apps •  Loaned ipads out to students


Pilot Project Results •  Exam score: paper 87% ebook 91% •  Most popular apps downloaded facebook and netflix •  Only 1 breakage of ipad, 1 ipad battery fail •  4 help calls over course of pilot project—ongoing 1 year so far •  Comments from students: liked portability, interactive parts

well appreciated, felt slower reader •  Faculty more engaged with curriculum—sense of ownership •  Faculty engaged from development to deployment


Challenges •  Not all students liked the ipad in all aspects—10% still

requesting paper •  Need to develop more robust process for ebook deployment •  More research needed on reading, comprehension and use in

clinical contexts
