Sunday, July 14, 2019The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

On Tuesday, July 16th, the Church will honor Mary under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This celebration reminds us of the gift of the Brown Scapular that Mary gave to St. Simon Stock. In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” Over the years, the Church extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it. The Brown Scapular is a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devotion consists in three things: VENERATION, CONFIDENCE AND LOVE. By simply wearing the Brown Scapular, we can tell her every moment of the day that we venerate her, love her and trust in her protection. She is a loving Mother who wants to bring us into deeper union with Jesus, Her Divine Son. The Brown Scapular is thus a silent prayer, where our Lady draws us to the Sacred Heart of Her Divine Son. It is good, therefore, to hold the scapular in the hand or wear it under your clothes. The Brown Scapular has aided many people, especially in time of temptation. It is a devotional, like the rosary, that brings us the powerful intercession of God’s Mother. The rosary and the scapular are indispensable. The evil spirit is utterly powerless when the wearer of a scapular faces temptation, calling upon the Holy Virgin in this silent devotion. “If you had recommended yourself to me, you would not have run into such danger,” was Our Lady’s gentle reproach to Blessed Alan de la Roche, one of her devoted servants. Many saints and popes have had a devotion to the Brown Scapular and encouraged others to do the same. Pope Paul VI when speaking of Marian devotions, especially of the Scapular, says “Let the faithful hold in high esteem the practices and devotions to the Blessed Virgin approved by the teaching authority of the Church. It is Our conviction that the Rosary of Mary and the Scapular of Carmel are among these recommended practices. The Scapular is a practice of piety, which by its very simplicity is suited to everyone.” If there is anyone who would like to become enrolled in the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, I would be honored to enroll you and help you grow in devotion to Our Blessed Mother, who helps us grow in deeper intimacy with Jesus, Her Son.

In the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Father Andrew Heiman

Feeling hurt, angry, or demoralized about the sexual crisis plaguing the Catholic Church? Our parish wants to help, and that's why we've ordered copies of a new book for every family/person in the parish. It's titled Letter to a Suffering Church: A Bishop Speaks on the Sexual Abuse Crisis by Bishop Robert Barron. Following the distribution of the books in early August, single session book studies will be held at

various times throughout the fall.

Prime Day is a two-day parade of epic deals and it's coming soon! You can make a difference while you shop Amazon Prime Day deals on July 15 & 16. Simply shop at smile.amazon.com/

ch/48-1231216 and AmazonSmile donates to Blessed Sacrament.

Did you know that the Blessed Sacrament Society of St. Vincent de Paul receives donations from our Altar Society, Men’s Club and Knights of Columbus? These generous donations, plus countless parishioners, allow Blessed Sacrament Parish to be a beacon of hope to the poor in our community. In the last year, we performed 126 “home visits” and were able to help those in need with rent assistance, utilities, food, etc. Next weekend, the homeless in Riverside and at the Coleman parking lot downtown will be treated with Freddy’s Frozen Custard hot dogs, thanks to a very generous donation from Freddy’s, and several of their key employees. This is not the first time they have helped, and we greatly appreciate their generosity!

An ongoing need from SVdP is for people with pick-up trucks, and strong adults to help occasionally with furniture deliveries for our clients. Some of our clients have nothing, and we are able to obtain furniture for them. But we are short on folks who can help pick-up and deliver. If you are interested in helping, just give us your email address/phone number and you would be contacted when an opportunity arises (NO OBLIGATION, just to check if you are available). If you would like to be on this list, please contact Dee Ziegert, 617-4000. Thanks for the consideration, and thanks to all those who have helped in the past!

The John & Hemma Clark Family would like to express their immense gratitude for all of the prayers that have been offered for their son, John Francis Clark. The outpouring of love and prayers from this parish (and many others) has lifted them up during this time.

Dear Parishioners of Blessed Sacrament,

My name is Justin Real, and I am a member of the Class of 2019 at Wichita High School East. Because I did not go to a Catholic High School, my experiences concerning the support of the parish were somewhat different than the rest of my graduating class at Blessed Sacrament. Despite not being part of the Catholic school system anymore, I have done my best to remain involved in the parish and school through coaching Middle school track, being a Mass Captain, leading service projects for CYO and being part of NOLA. And while my continued involvement has supported me in my life through keeping me connected to our church and friends from my class, these are not the main support mechanisms through which Blessed Sacrament has supported me. Because of you, I know I have always had a home. Everytime I see someone from the parish I recognize, I see a familiar face smiling back at me. The true hospitality and openness of everyone at the parish has led me to strive for something greater with whom I surround myself in life-focusing on community and care, which has been instrumental in not only my high school activities and choices, but college decisions as well. I cannot emphasize enough my gratitude for your support over the past 14 years of my life, but especially the last four. Justin Real
