Creating Your Works Cited Page A brief guide to some of the various citation styles Slide 2 A works cited page, also referred to as a bibliography or reference list, is a list of resources used directly or indirectly in your paper. The works cited page starts on its own page at the end of your paper and follows the same page numbering sequence as the rest of your paper. What Is a Works Cited Page? Slide 3 Legally it is against the law to copy someone elses work without citing them or else you will be breaking copyright law! Ethically it is wrong to use someone elses ideas. Credit should be given to the creator of the work. Whoever is reading your work should be able to locate your references to research the topic more. The works cited page gives the reader a quick reference. Why Should I Cite? Slide 4 When should I cite? When you are directly quoting someone elses words or writings. When you are taking someone elses idea and using it in your own writing (unless it is common knowledge, then you do not have to cite it). When you are referring to a source you should cite it, even if you do not quote from it or paraphrase.
