What Creative Commons is not
“Offering your work under a Creative Commons licence does not mean giving up your copyright. It means allowing more liberal use of your material, but only on certain conditions.”
From Creative Commons Australia, http://creativecommons.org.au/learn-more/licences
A Creative Commons licence, once issued, cannot be revoked.
Creative Commons does not constitute a free-for-all side-step of copyright. As a user, you still have obligations to fulfil.
Offers a chance for copyright holders to make their works more accessible, with certain limitations and be acknowledged as the creators of the work.

The extent of Creative Commons
What licences are available?
That CC will erode the system of copyright
That CC stands in the way of actual copyright reform (by offering a ‘quick fix’)
That CC removes any type of financial reward for the creation of a work
That CC is not ‘open’ as most of the licences impose restrictions on what can be done with the work
Misuse of copyright materials can occur and then be subsequently branded ‘CC’
Criticisms of Creative Commons
Allows for the translation of educational resources into different languages
Allows for evolution of resources (through peer and student edits)
CC enables the discoverability of resources
CC can be used as an educative tool – for what you can do with copyright material

Explore the Creative Commons universe
What does the licence say?
Do you need to ask for any additional permissions?
Have you attributed the source (common to all CC licences)?
Ensure that your use of the item is not derogatory
