Dear DBers,

One of the best things about living in DB is its eclectic community – it seems to attract all nationalities, professions and people of different passions. From a bricklayer-turned-poet to a pilot-turned-rock star, DB certainly seems to be packed full of interesting creative types. So this issue, we’ve met some of the artistic personalities in DB to find out how they get inspiration from our surroundings (p.18).

If all this talk of the arts inspires you, check out our interview with celebrated Hong Kong interior designer, Danny Cheng (p.24). Having won several awards for his designs for the Chianti show flats, he shares his tips on creating a fabulous DB interior – no matter what size your home is.

Finally, as summer approaches, it’s time to book the family holiday. So check out our favourite Asian adventures on p.28. These trips of a lifetime are memorable as well as being realistic and fun to enjoy with the entire family.

Easter is just around the corner; do you have any tips for sweet-toothed DB residents and egg-hunting kids?

Bus Interchange Discount for Shoppers in DB NorthTo facilitate your shopping in DB North, from 12 March to 30 June 2010, if you travel to the new Commercial Centre by buses C4, C9 or DB01S and pay the fares with an Octopus Card, you will enjoy a HK$4 discount for your trip when you leave DB North on any of these new bus routes within three hours and use the same Octopus Card.

於愉景北商場購物 可享巴士轉乘折扣為方便您到愉景北購物，於2010年3月12日至6月30日期間，若您使用八達通卡乘搭C4、C9或DB01S新巴士線前往新商場，並於3小時內使用同一張八達通卡乘搭這3條巴士線離開，即可享有港幣4元的特惠轉乘折扣。

More Shops to Open in DB North! Wellcome DB is situated in the brand new Commercial Centre in DB North. In the coming months, it will be joined by other exciting businesses, including a coffee shop, a salon and child care centres.

更多商戶將在愉景北商場開業！惠康愉景灣分店位於愉景北的新商場。在未來數月，有更多商戶將會陸續開業，包括咖啡店、髮型屋及幼兒中心。

Enhancement of Bus ServicesTo meet the increasing passenger demand in the northern part of DB, a number of bus routes now have enhanced services. The Tung Chung bus service (DB01R) has a supplementary bus service, DB01S, which runs between the Commercial Centre in DB North and Tung Chung MTR station everyday from 9:15am to 9:55pm.

Meanwhile, the Sunny Bay bus service (DB03R) also has a supplementary bus service from DB North – DB03P runs between 7:40am and 9:00am during weekday morning peak times to relieve passenger demand.

As for internal bus services, the 4 and 9 routes will now operate in the morning peak time before 9:00am on weekdays, while the new C4 and C9 circular routes will operate throughout the day. The circular routes will make use of the underpass, a new infrastructure at DB North, to serve and link up the main trunk routes of DB.

Please refer to the Passenger Notices issued by Discovery Bay Transit Services Limited for more details. All revised timetables are available at the pier bus terminus and can be downloaded from www.dbay.hk.

加強巴士服務為應付愉景灣北部不斷增加的乘客需求，多條巴士路線已經增強服務。東涌線巴士服務（DB01R）將會加開一條輔助巴士線「DB01S」，每天由上午9時15分至晚上9時55分往來愉景北的商業中心及東涌港鐵站。

另外，欣澳線巴士服務（DB03R）亦會於平日早上的繁忙時段加開一條輔助巴士線「DB03P」，由愉景北開出，服務時間為上午7時40分至上午9時，以舒緩該區乘客在早上的交通需求。

Survey ResultsThe most recent Estate Management Services Survey, conducted between December 2009 and January 2010 by City Management, has revealed a high level of satisfaction in DB. An impressive 86% of the 1,226 respondents rated “satisfied” or above for the quality of City Management’s services.

The most highly praised service category was staff services in the local management office, followed by landscape services and repair and maintenance services. The categories that achieved the lowest levels of satisfaction were community relations and events and cleaning services. Topping the list of suggested improvements was the handling of dog-related nuisances.

City Management would like to thank everyone for their feedback and the estate managers will contact the 2% of respondents who have cited their satisfaction as “poor”, to better understand their comments and suggestions, with a view to improving City Management's services to residents. 問卷調查結果城市管理處於2009年12月至2010年1月期間進行了最新一次的物業管理服務問卷調查，並發現其服務水平獲得愉景灣居民的高度評價。在收回的1,226份問卷當中，高達86%的被訪居民對城市管理處的服務質素給予「滿意」或以上的評級。

在多項服務範疇中，以分區管理處職員的服務水平獲得最高評價，其次為園藝服務，以及維修及保養服務。至於社區關係及社區活動和清潔服務則是最少被居民讚賞的項目。另外，狗隻滋擾問題被居民認為是最需要改善的管理事項。

New Football Pitch in DBA new natural turf football pitch will open in DB just in time for summer. The pitch, opening behind the Community Hall, will be ready in the second quarter of 2010 and can be used for sports activities such as football and rugby. Equipped with flood lights, the pitch will be managed by the Discovery Bay Residents Club (DBRC) on behalf of Hong Kong Resort Company Limited. DBRC will be responsible for taking bookings and its day-to-day administration. The pitch will be available for use by all DB residents and groups. City Rule RevisionsThe existing City Rules have been in operation since August 2000, so it is time to update them to reflect the latest developments in the community. A revised set of City Rules will come into effect on 1 April 2010. Major amendments concern the strengthening of control over decoration and alternation works, golf cart parking and driving, speeding of motor vehicles and contractor's conduct.

To protect the environment and use less paper, copies of the revised City Rules will be distributed to all units in CD format unless hard copies are specifically requested. Soft copies can also be downloaded from www.dbay.hk.

城市規例修訂現行的城市規例自2000年8月起推行，現在是時候更新，以配合社區的最新發展。經修訂的城市規例將於2010年4月1日開始生效，主要修訂是關於加強對裝修及改建工程、高爾夫球車停泊及駕駛、機動車輛超速，以及承建商行為的管制。

為保護環境和減少使用紙張，除非業戶特別提出要求需要印文本，否則經修訂的城市規例將會以光碟形式分發至各業戶的單位，而電子格式的城市規例亦可在www.dbay.hk下載。

16 May 5月16日 Discovery Bay Recycling Day 愉景灣環保日City Management (Discovery Bay Services Management Limited) is collaborating with the Environmental Protection Department, Winson Cleaning Services Company Limited, Environmental Protection Working Group of City Owners’ Committee and DB Green to hold Discovery Bay Recycling Day in the Piazza from 12pm-5pm. The aim of the event is to help educate residents about environmental protection. The program includes exhibitions, an introduction to glass recycling in DB, interactive games and models, live band performances and a collection point for unwanted electrical appliances which will be recycled. Salad Days清新沙律餐

Tropical DelightAt the suggestion of a vegetarian salad you’d be forgiven for stifling a yawn and flipping to the next page of the menu, but think again. The Key West Salad at Hemingway’s is a light and fruity explosion of colour and tastes. Mixing oranges with green and red bell peppers, barbequed pineapple, grated carrot and mango salsa with a light citrus vinaigrette, it is made especially to combat the boring old traditional meat-free salads. In an attempt to detoxify, Hemingways’ manager Gary Stokes decided to go vegetarian and whipped up this mouth-watering dish to make sure he wasn’t missing out.

Inspired by northern Caribbean cuisine, this Bahamas-tinged salad is the perfect tasty option for meat lovers who feel the need to take a break from bulky foods but still want to enjoy a full, refreshing and most importantly, delicious meal.

Hokkaido RoeGraced with a fresh sea breeze, D Deck is the perfect place to enjoy a seafood salad. If you fancy something more adventurous than the usual prawn cocktail, try the Japanese Cod Roe and Cucumber Salad, or “Kamiko Salad”, at Ippu. In this issue, Chef Keung, who has been the head chef at Discovery Bay Residents Club’s D’Café for over 10 years, shares the secret recipe for his famous Roast Spring Chicken.

加入愉景灣康樂會逾10年的D’Café 主廚王偉強師傅在今期與大家分享他的馳名菜式燒春雞之烹調方法。

Ingredients: 1 spring chicken (about 5-6 lbs); remove all the viscera, clean and dry it. Marinade: ½ onion (shredded), ½ carrot (shredded), celery leaves (moderate amount to taste), salt (1/2 tablespoon) Seasoning: Soy sauce (200 ml), dark soy sauce (1 tablespoon), salt (1 tablespoon), chicken powder (2 tablespoons), bay leaves (3 pieces), whole black peppercorns (8 pieces), a pinch of thyme, a pinch of rosemary, water (1,300 ml)

材料：春雞一隻（約5至6磅），去除內臟、清洗好及擦乾醃料：洋蔥半個（切條）、甘筍半條（切條）、西芹菜葉（適量）、 鹽（半湯匙）調味料：生抽豉油（200毫升）、老抽豉油（1湯匙）、鹽（1湯匙）、 雞粉（2湯匙）、香葉（3片）、黑椒粒（8粒）、百里香（少許)、 迷迭香（少許）、水（1,300毫升）

Directions: Shred the onions, carrots and celery leaves and put into a large 1. container, add ½ tablespoon of salt and marinate for 30 minutes.Place all the seasoning including soy sauce, dark soy sauce, salt, 2. chicken powder, bay leaves, whole black peppercorns, thyme, rosemary and water into the container.Place the spring chicken into the container and immerse in the 3. sauce. Leave it to marinate in the fridge for 24 hours.Place the marinated spring chicken on the baking tray. Preheat the 4. oven to 200 degrees F and bake for 45 minutes until done.

The Rock StarA pilot by day and musician by night, Nick Flavell is the literally high-flying singer, musician and songwriter for DB rock band Helium3. The UK-born rocker has had DB’s music scene’s toe tapping for eight years with his brand of “palatable rock music” and last year he released the band’s self-produced debut album.

Are you a full-time rock star?

My main job is being a pilot. It’s the job that keeps me here and it’s the music that keeps me sane!

How would you describe your music?

Palatable rock music. Our music is very international sounding; if you heard it on the radio you wouldn’t think it’s from Hong Kong. Although it’s classed as rock music, it’s got melody and a good feel to it.

How has the reception been to your debut album?

The reception was actually better than we expected. We released the CD and with the help of HMV, Hong Kong Records and iTunes we got into the charts, even without too

much PR; it was more word of mouth. Now we’re looking to go and hit Australia or the UK with it. We’re also on the shortlist to support some of the big international bands coming so that’s our number one thing, to show the Hong Kong crowd we can play a big stadium.

Where do you get your inspiration for the songs?

Anything from life; from love to loss, to feeling a bit down to feeling good, to having ambitions to progress in life, especially with the band. I take an idea, add a bit of fiction and shake it about a bit.

You played Discovery Bay’s Picnic in the Park – what was that like?

It was bigger and better than it’s ever been. We immensely enjoyed it - congratulations to the organisers. Unfortunately, I still had to flag down someone in a golf cart to get my keyboard home! It was quite fun afterward though, lugging all the stuff about among thousands of people heading home.

You recently shot a music video called “Rule the World”. Was this fun or a gruelling schedule?

It took four days to shoot but we had a lot of help from people lending us Ferraris, lending us their nightclub for the afternoon and we had 100 volunteers for the gig shot. IFC were really nice about letting us use their space as we’re an indie band on a budget.

How can people check out your music?

The album’s in HMV and Hong Kong Records and you can get it at Amazon and iTunes and Helium3 does regular performances at DBRC and other venues throughout DB.

我的職業是飛機師。這份工作讓我可以留在這裡，而音樂則讓我保持清醒！

您會如何形容您的音樂風格？

動聽的搖滾音樂。我們的音樂具有非常國際化的音色，如果您從電台聽到我們的作品，您是不會認為這些音樂是來自香港的。雖然它屬於搖滾音樂，但它的旋律優美，會讓您聽得舒服。

to put on our website and the Bertie Facebook group. My favourite place I’ve taken Bertie was skiing in Japan, we took him up the snowy mountains to take pictures.

Was the process of making a book easier or harder than you thought it would be?

It was harder. It took us about 18 months because we didn’t know anything about publishing so it was lots of emailing, waiting and meetings and in the end we decided to do it on our own and have the books printed and sent to the distributor. It’s easier!

What’s been the best part of the experience so far?

I still enjoy everything about it very much; it’s still all new and very exciting to me so there’s not really been one best part. Although, recently we went to a Chinese radio station to do an interview which was exciting because at the moment Bertie is only in English and we managed to arrange an interview on the Chinese channel.

Do you have plans for a follow-up?

We have written Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan and we are now working on Singapore. When we’ve done that one, we are hoping to go to England. Singapore won’t be out for a while as I’m still doing the drawings but the Japan edition should be out in March.

Where can we pick up the books?

In Dymocks, Bookazine, Page One and all major English bookshops and we’re always looking to put Bertie in more places.

您曾於愉景灣的繽紛同樂日中表演， 感覺如何？

繽紛同樂日的規模愈來愈大，節目亦愈來愈精彩。我們非常享受整個過程──我要特別恭喜主辦單位舉辦了一個如此成功的活動。可惜在活動完畢後，我仍然需要向高爾夫球

車上的人揮手截車，請他們送我的鍵盤回家！但到最後，我決定扛起所有東西，與群眾一同步行回家，這真的很有趣。

畫家香港插畫師Sam Wong在國泰航空工作了 15年。去年，她結合自己的旅遊經驗與創作天賦，與大嫂合作推出了一系列《Where Are You Going Today Bertie?》兒童叢書，並繼續創作同系列的新書。

這系列兒童叢書背後的創作意念是什麼？

我們的創作原意是要讓小朋友知道在不同國家可以看到什麼和找到什麼。我們發現書店中的旅遊書，並沒有太多是特別為小朋友而出版的。我們不是要教他們如何去一個地方，而是想透過精美的圖畫，讓他們對不同的地方有一些基本概念。即使孩子還未懂得閱讀書籍，亦可以從書中的圖畫對世界各地有更多了解。

您的旅遊經驗必定讓您在出版這系列叢書時份外稱職。

由於工作需要，我經常到不同地方旅遊。現在，我會帶著我的小Bertie公仔周遊列國，為公仔拍下照片，然後上傳到我們的網頁及Bertie的Facebook群組上。我帶著Bertie出遊，最喜歡的地方是在日本滑雪，我們還帶他到雪山上拍照。

您有計劃出版下一本Bertie圖書嗎？

我們已經寫了關於香港、泰國及日本的Bert ie圖書，目前正在製作關於新加坡的。完成後，我們希望可以帶Bertie到英國。關於新加坡的Bertie圖書不會在短時間內推出，因為我仍然在繪製當中，但關於日本的一本應該可以在3月推出。

What’s your DB project about?

It’s set in DB and is about the community. It employs a very difficult rhyming stanza but its structure is a very good formula for DB itself; as it’s a very structured place. I play with James Clavell’s wonderful plot where at the start of Hong

THE ARTIST Hong Kong illustrator Sam Wong worked for Cathay Pacific for 15 years. Last year she combined her extensive travel experience with her life-long creative flair to produce an ongoing series of children’s books with her sister-in-law called Where Are You Going Today Bertie?

What’s the idea behind the books?

The idea is to show young children what they can see and find in different countries. We looked at bookshops’ travel sections and saw that there weren’t many books for younger children. We’re not teaching them how to get to a place; we’re just giving them the basic idea and very colourful pictures. Even children who can’t read can still look at it and enjoy the pictures and understand more about different places around the world.

Your travel experience must make you well qualified for the job.

I’ve always travelled with my job so now I take with me a little Bertie doll and take pictures

I’m the only academic in the world that can build a house! There’s a part of me that’s never really got over the fact that there are tools to do a job and you learn how to use the tools properly and you become a craftsman at the job you do.

Kong, Jardine gets a load of money along with four half coins from a pirate king, who says: “If anybody ever comes to you with the other half of one of these coins you must do whatever they ask you to do.” Three turn up, but one never does so in my book, this lost coin is held by someone in DB so it’s a story about what you would do if you had something that could get you anything.

How would you describe your poetry?

My stuff’s very form orientated and I think it appeals to journalists and professional writers who have to put pen to paper for a living. Writers are suspicious of poetry because they read some of it and think: “I could have done that in five minutes.” So I taught myself how to do proper forms then I tried to do bigger ones and more than other people have done.

You seem involved in the local poetry scene. Is it thriving in Hong Kong?

You get a lot of regular meetings, including Out Loud at the Fringe Club and one at Joyce is Not Here, a bar in SoHo. The people who are brave enough to get it together and put their thoughts down should be lauded for their effort. The very fact it exists in the first place is the most remarkable thing about it.

How do you recommend people get creative and expressive with poetry?

If you were interested in calling yourself a poet I’d assume you’d be interested in reading a lot of poetry, learning how to do it and trying to do it seriously. I was a bricklayer until I was 21, my dad taught me to lay bricks when I was 15.

我的作品十分注重格式結構，相信會吸引一些執筆為生的記者和專業作家。作家對詩作一般都不太熱衷，因為他們看過後會認為自己可以用5分鐘時間寫出同樣的東西，所以我要求自己創作的詩篇要具備恰當的格式結構，然後嘗試創作一些更大型的作品，以及比其他人創作更多。

您似乎活躍於本地的詩篇創作圈子，香港在這方面的發展蓬勃嗎？

DB is an international community. When you designed the show flats for Chianti, what unique factors did you consider?

DB is a multicultural community with more or less the same number of Chinese and expats. In my designs, I assume that the flat owner is either an expat or a Chinese who is in frequent contact with other cultures, so I did not deliberately add too many Eastern elements. I use home decorations of different colours and blend a touch of Hong Kong’s cosmopolitan feel into the design. For instance, since the show flat for “Spa Residence” boasts fantastic views, I added more reflective materials such as mirrors and steel so that the flat owner can appreciate the sweeping scenery from the reflections no matter what corner he or she may be in.

Which part of “Spa Residence” do you find most satisfying?

The kitchen, because it was where the most alterations were made. I changed it into an open kitchen and added a huge cupboard so that the flat owner can store all sorts of cooking utensils. Apart from that, I specially put in an appropriate number of decorative mirrors. Through the reflections of the mirrors, the owner can enjoy the beautiful views outside while he or she is cooking.

What elements of home decorations can reflect the uniqueness of the DB community?

I believe that the characteristics of the DB community are the close community connection and the leisurely lifestyle. Therefore, more lifestyle elements can be added into the interior design: photo frames can reflect harmonious family relations; candles can create a relaxed, romantic atmosphere; cushions can create a cosy feeling.

What interior design trends have you seen in recent years?

In recent years the interior design trend has been to use mainly simple colour tones adorned by colourful home decorations. Meanwhile, as people are more aware of environmental protection, more eco-friendly home decorations are available such as chairs made of recycled paper.

What small revamps can readers give to their home for a fresh look without spending too much money?

You can consider changing the storage spaces such as closets and tea cabinets into built-in designs which will make the interior look more centralised. In addition, adding decorative mirrors on the surface of the cupboard doors can effectively increase the sense of space in the house.

Which type of home décor can highlight the effects of the interior design?

The lights. The same light placed on the wall or in the middle of the sitting room will produce completely different effects. I think that interior lighting need not be too fancy; functionality is more important. Nevertheless, if the dining room is graced with a uniquely designed chandelier, it will become the focus of attention and if the rays can project a silhouette precisely on the dining table, it can create a distinctive dining atmosphere.

To create a stylish home for two, what distinctive elements can be considered?

If you don’t have much interior space, you don’t need to make clear-cut distinctions between different areas. For instance, you can consider pulling down excessive walls, transform some interior spaces into open designs, or even change the bathroom walls into glass walls to increase the sense of space.

For families with kids, what special points should be considered when designing the home?

Pay special attention to home safety. Avoid slippery materials such as smooth marble to reduce the risk of children slipping and falling. As for household products, select designs with rounded corners to prevent children getting injured from banging and bumping into the furniture. Parents who would like to create a vibrant home for their kids can consider using a single bright colour as the main tone. When colourful toys are placed against an overly rich colour tone, the house will look messy.

由於愉景灣是一個多元文化的社區，中國人與外國人的人口相若，故我會假設屋主是一位外國人或經常接觸外國文化的中國人，在設計時不會刻意加入太多東方元素。我會運用不同顏色的家飾品，將香港的都會感融入室內設計之中。例如「Spa Residence」這個示範單位擁有絕佳的景觀，我便會多加利用鏡鋼等物料，讓屋主無論身處哪個角落都可以透過物料的反射，欣賞到戶外的開揚景致。

廚房，因為這是改動最多的地方。我將廚房改為開放式設計，並加設一個大型廚櫃，方便屋主存放各式煮食用具。此外，我特意在廚房內加入適量的鏡飾，讓屋主在煮食期間亦可以透過鏡面的反射，欣賞戶外的醉人景色。

您認為哪些設計元素或家飾品能夠反映出愉景灣獨特的社區環境？

我認為緊密的社區聯繫與悠然的生活態度都是愉景灣的社區特色，所以在家居設計上可以加入多些生活化的元素，例如擺放相架可以反映出和諧的家庭關係、蠟燭能夠營造輕鬆浪漫的氣氛，而咕臣則可以帶出溫馨的感覺。

近年最流行的室內設計風格是什麼呢？

近幾年的室內設計都流行以簡單色調為主調，然後再以色彩繽紛的家飾品作點綴。與此同時，隨著大眾對環保問題日趨重視，市面上亦多了很多環保家飾品的選擇，例如由再造紙所製的座椅等。

如果不想花太多錢，但又想令家居有煥然一新的感覺，可以進行哪一類的小工程？

可以考慮將室內的儲物空間，如衣櫃、茶櫃等改成入牆式設計，令室內的設計較為統一。另外，在櫃門表面裝配鏡飾，更可有效增加室內的空間感。

您認為哪類家飾品最能突顯家居設計的效果？

燈飾。因為即使是相同的一盞燈，放在牆邊或客廳中心所呈現出來的效果會完全不一樣。我認為室內的燈飾在外觀設計上無須太花巧，應以功能性為主。不過，如果在飯廳選擇一盞設計特別的吊燈，則有聚焦的效果，而且光線的陰影如能恰當地反射在餐桌上，更可以為您營造出不一樣的用餐氣氛。

如要打造一個時尚的二人世界，在設計家居時可考慮哪些不一樣的元素？

如果室內空間不是太充裕，在各個區域的劃分上可以不用那麼明顯，例如可以考慮拆除多餘的牆壁，將室內的部分間格改作開放式設計，甚至將浴室改以玻璃牆作分隔，從而增加室內的空間感。

對於有小朋友的家庭，在設計家居時又應特別注意哪些地方？

應特別注意家居安全的問題，避免使用如光身雲石等光滑的用料，以減低兒童滑倒的機會。至於家居用品方面則應多選用圓角的設計，以免兒童因與家具擦撞而受傷。如果家長想為小朋友營造一個充滿活力的家居，可考慮選用單一的光亮顏色作為主調，因為過份豐富的顏色與色彩繽紛的玩具放在一起時，反而會令家居看起來雜亂無章。

Romantic Indonesia: Sunsets and SeclusionWhether you’re planning a honeymoon or just looking for a romantic getaway, Indonesia’s sunsets and secluded spots make for the perfect destination. The rainy season can literally put a dampener on things but from May onward there’s nothing between you and days of soothing sunshine and perfect beaches.

While Bali can be nightlife oriented, there is an abundance of remote islands nearby to explore and savour. 17,000 islands, in fact, 11,000 of which are uninhabited. Moyo Island is one of the few to have been graced with a five-star hotel (the Amanwana) but remain otherwise untouched and the safari-style luxury tents provide a fantastic base from which to trek, dive, snorkel and take a romantic cruise on the Flores Sea.

From a beachfront outlying to island oasis with some of the best snorkelling in the world to an inland nature paradise, Sabah has it all, says Tracey Tokuka of the Malaysian Tourism Board.

The countryside that surrounds the vast Mount Kinabalu (Malaysia’s tallest mountain) is not only rich in spectacular sights, but also full of idyllic spots to chill out and get back to nature.

“The perfect place to unwind is the Poring Hot Springs,” says Tokuka. These tranquil springs allow you the time, space and peace to unwind, while Sabah’s mountain-top spas, offering volcanic mud wraps and unique local therapies and pampering, top it off with truly transcendent treatments to which natural and sensual experiences combine.

For a more immersive back-to-nature experience, the surrounding vast and rich natural beauty and exotic wildlife provide ample opportunity. “From the world’s largest flower to fascinating indigenous orang-utans and a myriad of monkeys and ethereal fireflies, the wealth of things to see and do in Sabah allows you the option of doing as much or as little as you like.”

Wild China: An Adventure for FamiliesA trip to the Southern China province of Yunann can become an unforgettable family adventure. On the five-day “Tea Horse Trail”, you wind your way through the mountains and villages on foot, stay among the local hilltribes, see spectacular sights and finish up at a world-class luxury resort. On the two-day and one-night trek through life-affirming scenery, including the magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge, ponies carry the luggage, with an extra one on hand should the kids get tired. The trekking experience provides the perfect opportunity for families to bond. “You walk together the whole day and if the kids get tired the parents encourage them. In the evening you talk to each other and share your experiences,” says Chang Theng Hwee, Managing Director of Country Holidays, a travel agency that organises remote adventure holidays. The hike isn’t overly strenuous, making it great for experienced trekkers, beginners and children.

Visiting Yunann allows you to explore real rural China, away from the crowded and polluted cities. As Theng Hwee explains, “Trekking in Asia is unique. The mountains and rural areas are always populated so not only do you get to appreciate beautiful scenery, you also encounter the village folk living in those areas.”

The history and culture is a great way to get children excited and learning in the lead-up to the holiday. However, the trip shouldn’t be too education-heavy. “Parents have to be realistic,” says Theng Hwee. “You can’t expect to cram in too many things and have the kids make it a learning journey; they really just want to have fun. You need a lot of negotiation!”

After the adventure comes the well-earned stay at the Banyan Tree Lijiang, topped off with a show choreographed by director and Beijing Olympics opening ceremony choreographer Zhang Yimou. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, it’s a spectacular end to the family journey of a lifetime.

From a medical perspective, varicose veins are formed when the valves of the superficial veins cannot open and close properly. As the valves can no longer stop the blood from flowing backwards, blood accumulates on the legs, causing the superficial veins to swell and deform causing bluish bulging veins to appear.

Not Limited to WomenIf you think that varicose veins occur only in women, you are wrong! Dr Tse explains that although women are prone to varicose veins due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, men do stand an equal chance of getting them when these hormonal factors are eliminated. “Hormonal changes during pregnancy will cause blood vessels to dilate,” he says. “Meanwhile, as the foetus develops, the mother’s enlarging abdomen puts mounting pressure on the back flow of blood in the veins of the lower limbs. Blood will then easily accumulate in the legs, causing varicose veins and swelling.”

He pointed out that in addition to people with a family history of varicose veins, the high-risk group, irrespective of men or women, includes those whose occupation requires them to stand for long periods of time, such as air stewards, salespeople, waiters and teachers. The reason being that standing for long periods of time exerts pressure on the valves and back flow of blood is likely to occur. When people are obese or need to do a lot of physical labour the abdominal pressure will increase, which disrupts the flow of blood back to the heart, making them likely to develop varicose veins.

Varicose veins can be divided into six stages: in the early stage, spider veins appear on the leg - the capillaries at the ankle become visible; then bulging, bluish and twisted veins appear; next, the area above the ankle becomes swollen; the skin at the ankle turns black or dark brown and begins to harden; the skin becomes itchy and wounds appear; and in the final stage, the wound ulcerates and cannot heal on its own.

Dr Tse pointed out that at the onset, patients who fail to seek early treatment will find their calves sore and painfully swollen after standing for a long time. Later,

as blood circulation deteriorates, metabolic waste will build up in the blood vessels, causing frequent cramps. In addition, the veins of the legs will be twisted and swollen, while deposits in the veins will turn the skin black or dark brown. This not only affects one’s appearance, but may also worsen into a skin ulcer or even trigger deep-vein thrombosis, which can be fatal.

Early Treatment Reduces RecurrenceIf you discover early symptoms on your legs, try to wear medical compression stockings to prevent the situation from worsening. As Dr Tse explains, “Medical compression stockings can help your legs by initiating simulated muscular activity that gradually relieves pressure starting from the ankle up to the leg, so that blood can effectively flow up the thighs. Meanwhile, the compression force can also smoothen the swollen veins and relieve the constant pressure that builds up on the veins.” He also suggested three curative treatments: sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation and surgery. In sclerotherapy, medication is directly injected into the varicose veins to block and seal the vein, so that blood continues to circulate properly through other veins. Endovenous ablation is used to insert a catheter into the varicose vein. It releases heat that blocks and disintegrates the varicose vein which is then absorbed by the body through metabolism. Surgery, suitable for thick and twisted veins, is to tie up and remove the

When taking long trips on the plane during the holiday season, be aware of the comfort of your legs. When you’re cramped in a seat for hours without exercise, the back flow of blood in the veins increases the risk of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as Economy Class Syndrome. Don’t forget that people with varicose veins have a higher risk of DVT. Below are five tips from Dr Tse to prevent DVT:

很多人或會在長假期出外旅遊，在乘坐長途機時，應留意腳部的舒適度，因為長時間坐在狹窄的座位上會令身體缺乏活動，令靜脈血液回流受阻，從而增加了出現深層靜脈栓塞的風險，即是所謂「經濟客艙症候群」；而靜脈曲張患者更會較一般人容易患上「經濟客艙症候群」。謝醫生提供以下5大提示讓您參考，以預防您在乘坐長途機時患上「經濟客艙症候群」：

Drink more water 多喝水： This can reduce blood viscosity and enhance circulation.

可減低血液黏稠度，促進血液循環。

Avoid alcohol 避免喝酒： Alcohol is a diuretic which speeds up the passing out of liquids from the body, making the blood thicker and raising the risk of developing DVT.

由於酒精具有利尿作用，會加速水份排出體外，令血液黏稠度變高，增加深層靜脈栓塞發生的機會，所以還是少喝為妙。

Take injections or medications 打針或食藥： Consult your doctor before your trip to see if any injection or medication is needed to reduce your risk of developing DVT.

Move around more 多走動： Leave your seat and move around more to alleviate poor circulation of the legs.

Wear medical compression stockings 穿著醫療壓力襪： Pressure change in the plane cabin can impair circulation; blood is likely to accumulate in the legs causing thrombosis. Medical compression stockings can ease vein dilation and help blood to flow back to the heart, thereby preventing vein thrombosis.

varicose vein. After treatment, patients only need to do more exercises, maintain good living habits and avoid putting constant pressure on their legs – and the recurrence rate can be as low as 4 to 5 per cent.

Prevention is Better than CureDr Tse also gave us a few tips on preventing the development of varicose veins. “It is well known that exercise can make us healthier, but few know that swimming can help prevent varicose veins because water pressure can effectively relieve the pressure of our legs,” he explains. On the other hand, avoid standing for long hours during work and make a point of moving around frequently so that blood can flow to all parts of the body through muscular activity. Finally, wearing medical compression stockings can help alleviate the pressure on the veins of the legs and enhance circulation.

從醫學的角度來解釋，靜脈曲張的成因是由於淺層靜脈血管的活瓣膜不能正常開合，引致活瓣膜無法防止血液倒流，血液因而聚積在腳部，造成淺層血管擴張及扭曲變形，亦是很多時在患者腳部出現的所謂「青筋」。

靜脈曲張不是女性專利

如果您以為靜脈曲張只會在女性身上出現，那就大錯特錯了。謝醫生表示，女性的確可能在懷孕期間因為荷爾蒙改變而較易患上靜脈曲張，不過，撇除這些因素外，男性患上靜脈曲張的機會率其實與女性相若。

塞，把有問題的血管消融，讓身體可以透過新陳代謝於體內吸收。至於外科手術則是針對處理一些較粗及較彎曲的血管，將有問題的血管紮起後移出體外。謝醫生指出，一般患者接受治療後，只要多做運動，保持良好的生活習慣，避免腳部長期受壓，靜脈曲張復發的機率只有4-5%左右。

預防勝於治療

防患未然，謝醫生為我們提供了幾個預防靜脈曲張的方法。多做運動固然能夠強身健體，原來游泳更有助預防靜脈曲張，因為水壓能有效舒緩雙腳所承受的壓力；而在工作期間亦應儘量避免長時間站立，否則應多走動，讓血液能夠隨著肌肉活動運行全身。此外，穿著醫療壓力襪亦有助減輕腿部靜脈所承受的壓力，促進血液循環。

他說：「女性在懷孕期間，體內荷爾蒙改變會造成血管擴張，而胎兒的成長亦會加強了母親腹部對下肢靜脈血液回流的壓力，令血液容易堆積在腳部，導致靜脈曲張和出現水腫。」

他指出，無論男性或女性，除了家族性遺傳外，若從事一些需要長期站立的行業，如機艙服務員、售貨員、侍應及教師等都屬高危族，因為長期站立會令活瓣膜長時間受壓，亦較容易出現血液倒流的情況；至於肥胖人士及經常需要體力勞動者，則會因為腹部壓力的增加，而導致血液回流不順暢，同樣會較容易患上靜脈曲張。

一般來說，靜脈曲張的病情可分為6個階段：由最初在腳部出現蜘蛛網狀靜脈，即腳踝上的微絲血管變得明顯；露出青筋及血管出現扭曲；腳眼對上位置出現浮腫；腳踝皮膚變成黑色或深咖啡色及開始變硬；皮膚出現痕癢及傷口；以至最後傷口出現潰爛，且不能自然癒合。謝醫生指出，患者如果未有及早診治，初期可能會在長期站立後覺得小腿酸痛、脹痛，繼而因為血液循環欠佳，使新陳代謝的廢物積聚於血管之中，引致腳部經常抽筋。此外，患者腳部的靜脈血管會變得彎曲、腫脹，而血管淤積亦會使腳部皮膚變成黑色或深咖啡色，影響外觀，嚴重的更會令皮膚潰爛，甚至引發深層靜脈栓塞，構成生命危險。

及早治療能減低復發機會

若您發現自己的腳部出現上述的初期病徵，可嘗試穿著醫療壓力襪，以防止病情惡化。謝醫生說：「醫療壓力襪能輔助您的雙腳，透過模擬肌肉活動的原理，以漸進方式從足踝逐步往上遞減壓力，讓血液能夠有效地輸往大腿。同時，壓力亦可以將已脹起的血管撫平，避免有問題的血管持續受壓。」

另外，謝醫生亦介紹了3個根治性的治療方法，分別是注射治療、靜脈腔內消融術和外科手術。注射治療是透過打針的方式直接將藥物注入有問題的血管內，把血管堵塞及封閉，讓血液可透過其他正常血管繼續循環運行。靜脈腔內消融術是將導管放進有問題的血管之中，透過導管所釋出的熱能令血管堵

2,000 people scaled the mountains of Discovery Bay in the annual Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Hong Kong orienteering event in January, which is the largest of its kind in Hong Kong. 在1月，共2,000人在愉景灣參加由無國界醫生舉辦的一年一度野外定向活動。這是全港最大型的同類型活動。
