over what you already have

and thank God for it?

 Virtue has quite a lot

of meanings. The diction-

ary says virtue is a

“commendable quality; a

particular moral excel-

lence.” What does virtue

mean to you? Is it simply a

good character quality or is

it more than that? To have

more excellence, we must

have virtue. Virtues, in

simple words, are good

character traits. Our four

quality traits this school

 year all contribute to our

theme. And our theme –

H.A.T.S. Off to Excellence

– goes for the whole school

We all strive to be excellent– great, superb and terrific

kids. H.A.T.S. Off to Excel-

lence!

H.A.T.S. Off to Excellence

This school year, 2012-

2013, our school celebrates

its 65th anniversary and

Founder’s Day. Our theme

is H.A.T.S. Off to Excel-

lence. Our school thrives

for excellence, for we have

an excellent God, to say the

least. We have four charac-

ter traits, all of which con-

tribute to excellence – en-

durance, meekness, enthu-

siasm and virtue.

Endurance is the

“inward struggle to with-

stand stress and do your

best.” Simply put, endur-

ance is perseverance – not

giving up no matter what.

We must run the race to-

 wards Jesus, not stopping

or letting obstacles hinder

us. When we fail, we must

try again and again and

again until we succeed. If

 you endure, you will

achieve excellence.

Meekness is “yielding

my personal rights and ex-

pectations with a desire to

serve.” When we are meek,

we are slow to anger, not

easily getting mad for even

just a small thing. Meek peo-

ple are also humble, content

 with what they have and

 willing to go last. Meekness

will help you grow closer to

God because God, too, is

meek. He loves us though

 we wrong Him.

Enthusiasm is not an

unfamiliar word. Enthusi-

asm, in short, means happi-

ness or gratefulness. If

 you’re grumbling about all

 your problems, why don’t

you stop and think of how

much you are blessed? You

have a home, good food,

loving parents, lots of

friends and an awesome

God. Instead of complain-

ing, why don’t you smile

H.A.T.S. off to Excellence!

— Patrice Danielle Lim

I want this Founders’ week to

be exciting. Our motto is

H.A.T.S. off to Excellence. H

for habits, A for attitude, T for

thoughts and S for skills. I

want our Founder’s day to be

special by having these charac-

ter traits. They are good, not

bad. I want everyone to remem-

ber that this Founder’s week is

about God and how He built

this Christian school. I want us

to endure. We should endure

till the end. Endurance was our

endure these challenges in our

life, we can never reach the

finish line and we can never

succeed without endurance, it

helps us in our daily walk with

God. Now, what do you think?

Do we need endurance in our

lives?

— May Beline Sarad

If you look up the word

“Endurance” in the Merriam

 Webster Dictionary, you will

find what it says there, “to hold

on, to endure…” But do you

understand it? Do you have any

idea on how to apply it to your

life? Well, for short, endurance

means “not giving up”, “finish

what you started”, or in other

 words “persistence”. You might

question why we learn further

about that or why is it needed

in our life. But as a Christian, it

really helps us! Our life is like a

journey. In this journey, we will

meet different obstacles, chal-

lenges and circumstances.

These are tests given to us by

God. They allow us to learn

and somehow, to mold us into

a better person. We need to

enemies before they don’t live.

I’ll strive for the best. Even to

the guests. We all know life is

short. So we got to live it long.

—Chloe Chua

I can’t say that I’m meek. My

heart sometimes leak. Then,

anger comes my way. And I

can’t really stay. I blow up

like a volcano. Then, I can

hurt those whom I love. Even

to those above. It’s hard to

ask for repentance to those I

really hate. But I should so I may

show a good trait. Some say I am

meek. Don’t believe them, they’re

just geeks. I drive my paths to the

wrong way. I can really say I may

act like an atomic bomb. And

bring some to their tombs. I don’t

like to hurt. My heart will be filled

or results in fruitless* effort. If this is

the result, never give up. Just

P.U.S.H.* Be content with what you

have or be happy with what you

have. Being enthusiastic is a trait we

must obtain or unlock.

GLOSSARY:

*1 – unwholesome – junk foods or

other food which might make you

overweight

*2 – fruitless – unsuccessful

*3 -- P.U.S.H. – acronym for “Pray

Until Something Happens”

— Danica Go

Enthusiasm is being satisfied

 with God’s love wholeheartedly.

This means to be happy with

God’s love for us whether mis-

fortunes or good things happen

to us. An example of this is be-

ing enthusiastic with our nutri-

tious food. Be happy that God

provides fruits and vegetables for

us to be healthy. The fruits and

 vegetables are like Christ who

makes us alive, alert and awake

with God. Put God first in every-

thing. Have a keen interest in

the Bible. Be happy that Christ

died for us and cleansed or

washed our sins away. Don’t be half

-heated as God’s servant. The defi-

nition of this proverb is saying that

serve God with all your heart, mind

and soul. The healthiness of our bod-

ies represents God. The fruits and

 vegetables we eat everyday represent

Jesus Christ. The nutrients and vita-

mins that are in the healthy food rep-

resent the Holy Spirit while the un-

 wholesome* food and sickness repre-

sent Satan. When you eat healthy

food, it is like saying, “I am amazed

how God created this.” Also, have

enthusiasm when preaching or shar-

ing the gospel even when it’s difficult

about it. We’re supposed to be

eager to learn. But now, all I

hear is a groan and a moan and I

see grumpy little faces,. When

we do things related to God, we

have to be eager and ready. If

our hearts are too cold, we need

prayer and God’s help. My ques-

tions is, are you enthusiastic?

— Michelle Manglapus

Have you ever wondered what

enthusiasm really is? Did you

wonder where or when you can

apply enthusiasm? Well a lot of

people haven’t even heard of this

word before. But to tell you hon-

estly, enthusiasm makes me feel

smart. Hearing it from people

rings my bell. I’ve learned that it

is actually applicable almost every-

where. I didn’t know the true

meaning of enthusiasm until I

had a cooking class. A man asked

us if we were enthusiastic about

cooking. I turned to my mom

and asked what it means. Since

then, the way I see enthusiasm

is being eager to learn or to do

something. In many different

ways, we can be ready to learn.

But we actually have to be ea-

ger the most when we hear

God’s word. Sometimes, we get

too full of ourselves that we

have forgotten about God. And

because of that, we get bored

when we hear His word. We

are supposed to be excited

The Hatless Celebrity

Inside was good because it

— Julia Wu

There was a mushroom far,

cious. When people ate it,

they all had laptops. Well,

best friend Zilo had dinner

together at their Tree

looked at the tissue and

headed to the store. I

bought medicine and

 went back home.

I walked to a nearby store

to buy some medicine for

my baby brother. As I was

crossing the road, I saw an

old lady. Her hat was so

big that it was hard for me

to see her face. I saw her

need to cross the road. I

ran towards her and led

her to a bench. She sat

and asked me to sit with

her. I listened. Her hat

flew away as the wind

blew. I tried to get it but

she stopped me. She told

me that the hat was noth-

ing. I faced her and said

to her, “You look famil-

iar!” The old lady intro-

duced herself. She was my

favorite celebrity. I smiled

and sat closer to her. She

told me all her funny mo-

how time goes. The differ-

ent colors that brighten or

The design of the different

my dad, begging him to read

bedtime stories to me. One of

my favorites was the story of

“Cinderella”. I loved her glass

slippers and her tragic life

story. My dad told me that I

can be a “Cinderella” too but

I don’t need the stepmother

and sisters because I’m

blessed with a happy family!

— May Beline Sarad

My father is a very strict per-

son. He does things properly

and perfectly. He won’t even

allow a little mistake. Some-

times, he will even lets you

do those things all over again

just because you didn’t do it

that perfectly. But he can be

loving and sweet too. He can

be an understanding friend

and a good playmate. Some-

times when I feel bored, my

brother and I would call my

dad and ask him to play bas-

ketball with us. Although my

dad is not a good basketball

player, it is always fun to see

him playing basketball. How

he carries himself and runs

will just make me laugh un-

consciously. When I was

younger, I used to run after

SOME! We went all around

the beach. Then Violet spot-

ted something. She called me.

Since I made top grades, I

recognized it. It was a very

priceless pearl from Spain! I

told her what it was immedi-

ately. She told her parents.

They were proud of us. Espe-

cially Violet. They drove me

home at 5 PM. I said goodbye

to Violet ad her family. I told

my parents what happened.

They were very happy and

proud of me and we all went

to bed.

— Lynelle Eliana Lim

I have a friend. Her name is

 Violet. She’s very secretive.

She told me that she was a

princess. One Saturday, she

asked me if I was going any-

where. I said no. She told

me I could meet her whole

family. I asked my mom if I

could go with Violet. My

mom said yes. I called my

friend and she said she

would pick me up in her

small black limo. I waited

after I ate a breakfast of cere-

als. I didn’t have to wait very

long. She was always early. I

hopped into her limo. Her

dad was driving. He was very

nice to everybody, especially

to his family. He said we

 were going to a castle.

Mrs. Honey, his wife, was

sitting beside him, caring

for her son, Richard. Mrs.

Honey said we could ex-

plore the limo. After a few

twists and turns, Mrs.

Honey said we were al-

ready there and we could

explore the whole castle.

 Violet’s grandma, who

 was queen, was trying on

a gown. She said hello.

Then we went out back.

The Diamond Planet

a butterfly but it had no wings. The

creature seemed to be an alien – it was!

It knew how to speak English and it

said, “Get out! Get out! Get out of this

planet! You might just die! This isn’t a

diamond, this thing’s a shape shifter!

This is our master! He already de-

stroyed five planets and Jupiter is next!He will invade the whole universe and

by the way, the universe is infinite!

We’re from another universe, and I

have an exact copy of you!” The scien-

tist said, “No! You just want to have

this planet, right?!” But what the alien

said was true and his exact copy re-

placed him. The planet destroyed the

whole universe and the shape shifter,

striking in another universe, became

just a 2 meter in height and length

diamond, going to destroy another

universe… again.”

— Chloe Nicole Hsu

There was a scientist who was crazy

for science. Every day, he goes to

caves and looks for the treasure

he’s been wanting to find all his

life. He also wanted to find the dia-

mond that produces diamonds

every second. He thought it would

make him rich. One day, he wentto Paris for a vacation. When he

was at the Eiffel Tower, he saw a

tiny diamond. He couldn’t get it off

the ground, so he dug more. He

saw that it was a huge one. It was 1

meter in width and 2 meters in

height. He painted it so everyone

thought it was fake and then he

went back home. He was a crazy

scientist, and he thought he could

bury the mother diamond in space.

He was also an astronaut so he trav-

eled to a moon in Jupiter. He used

a machine to dig a big hole and he

hid the mother diamond there.

Then a few years later, when he

went back to that planet, it was all

diamonds! Even the planet was a

diamond! He loved to live there, so

he took ten years to discover that

chemical that would put oxygen on

that planet forever. He tested it onthe diamond planet. He did it! So

every month, he would go back to

earth and sell 1 billion diamonds

for only 10 dollars each. He became

very rich and bought everything he

wanted on earth. But one day, he

saw something gold coming out of

the diamond. He said, “Oh, gold.

 Another mother gold!” The gold

thing was only half a meter in

height and half a meter in width.

But it turned out to be a creature

with three eyes, no nose and one

mouth. It had an antennae, just like

found Tom so they kidnapped him and

brought him to the woods. That was

where Tom’s parents were so they saw

him and rescued him while the five men

went to the police station. Mary and

Richard said to Tom, “We will never

leave you because we love you.”

— Sherilyn G. Lu

There was a baby boy named Tom.

He was brought to the orphan place

because no one owned him. He

stayed there until one day there

were two people named Mary and

Richard who needed a baby since

Mary couldn’t give birth. So they

went to the orphan place to look for

a baby. They took Tom from the

orphan place and they owned him al-

ready. When Tom grew up, he was a

diligent boy who work so hard. One

day, his parents needed to go to a place

far, far away for work. So his parents

asked him if it’s okay if he stays alone.

Tom agreed. When Tom’s parents left

the next day, there were five men who

The Battle of the Three Kingdoms

one was looking. The humans woke

up devastated as they saw that their

beloved tree was cut down. So they

declared war against the elves and

the halflings. Many of them died and

it was a horrible sight. Then a young

elven child, 7 years old at the most,

stood in the middle of the battlefield

and yelled, “Stop!” The soldiers all

stopped and they all stared curiously

at the elven boy. “Why must wefight? Why can we not just talk? Why

can we not just try to understand

each other?” A young maiden peeked

out from her hiding spot and said,

“Can’t you see what has happened

just because of our hatred, jealousy

and pride? Many of our people are

dead, just because we refuse to talk.”

More people emerged from the shad-

ows, stood by the boy and nodded in

agreement. “I want us to live in

peace,” said a little girl, holding her

broken doll. The king, the queen,

and the chief stared at each other,

and they all mentally agreed that the

feud had to stop. After that, the

three kingdoms lived as one, peace-

fully and happily.

— Jillliane Cassidy Lua

Once, in distant lands that can-

not be found using the naked

eye, there were three kingdoms

divided by hatred, jealousy and

pride. There was the kingdom of

the humans, Middle Earth; the

kingdom of the elves, the Lands

of Light and Beauty; and the

kingdom of the halflings, the

Hidden Lands. Each kingdom

held a special treasure and eachof the treasure had a special

power. Middle Earth had a giant

tree that bore fruits delicious

beyond comparison. The hu-

mans saw the tree as their pride

and joy. The Land of Light and

Beauty had a precious gem that

kept them immortal, young and

beautiful. They hated the hu-

mans and the halflings because

they considered them ugly com-

pared to themselves. The Hid-

den Lands had a river that could

cure any ailment and any sick-

ness but it would only give a fair

share to the halflings. They were

jealous of the elves’ beauty and

the human’s height. One day,

the king of the Middle Earth

sent his best spy to slowly sabo-

tage the Land of Light and

Beauty. He wanted Middle

Earth to be the best kingdom.

 While the stealthy spy searched

around, he found the elves’ gem

in a hidden room. He eagerly

snatched it and returned back

to the Middle earth. When the

king saw the gem, he was

pleased. Meanwhile, In the

Land of Light and Beauty, the

elves started to notice that they were aging. The queen was furi-

ous and decided to create a

plan. Not knowing that it was

the humans who had stolen the

gem, she called her blacksmith

and told him to go to the Hid-

den Lands and to clog up their

river. The blacksmith was ex-

tremely strong so clogging up

the river with giant boulders

was an easy job for him. He

even decided to steal some wa-

ter to bring to the queen. Once

the halflings saw that their

beautiful river was gone, they

quickly went to their chief,

blaming the humans for the

job. So the chief called the best

loggers in town and told them

to cut down the humans’ tree.

They did this at night, when no

The Life of Jason Steve

drifting away like a boat from the

shore. I was like a comet. I saw a

gazebo was right there but it did-

n’t feel right. I felt the Earth be-

gin to crack and fall down so I

ran to the gazebo as quickly as I

could. It was the only place that

seemed unaffected by the unusual

earthquake. The next thing I

knew, I was sitting by a pond,

 watching the reflections of lost

memories of mine. My daughter

and my wife. And then I saw im-

ages of things that would never

happen in my life like the fame

and the fortune. I saw my life as

an old, boring janitor. A voice

suddenly told me to choose what

I want the most but the voice saidthat I must make a wise decision

because there would be no turn-

ing back. I had to make a choice

between my daughter, wife, fame

and fortune and my real life.

There were tempting voices all

around me but I knew that my

daughter and my wife had already

moved on and so must I. I chose

my real life. I woke up in the hos-

pital not knowing whether I had

dreamed it all or not.

-- Kyra Mae C. Lim

Wouldn’t it be cool to have the

fame, the fortune, and the swag-

ger? Well, I don’t have that life.

I’m the opposite of that. I’m

 Jason Steve the Janitor. I’ve

been in Shay Mid school for

fourteen years of my life and it’s

fourteen years wasted! I’m about

to tell the head of our school,

Principal Wilkins. I call him

Wilkins, just Wilkins. As I was

 walking down the corridor to

his office, I gave myself a pep

talk. “You can do this! Breathe

in and out. You’re not going to

let this ruin your life. Keep it

together. No tears.” I knocked

on the door. “Come in, Jason,”

said Wilkins. “I sure have some-thing to say to you!” I begin to

say but couldn’t finish my sen-

tence when the ring of the tele-

phone cut me off. “Um, Jason,

I’ve been expecting this call. Just

wait there,” Wilkins said. So I

waited. A few minutes later he

said, “My wife and I are going

to have a baby!”

“Congratulations!” I said in-

stead. “Now what were you go-

ing to tell me?” Wilkins asked. I

knew I couldn’t just tell him

that I quit after his happy news

so I just said, “Um… Can I leave

 work early?” “Sure!” said Wil-

kins as he cried tears of joy. I

went on a train and called my-

self a coward. I banged my hand

against the wall. I was still wait-

ing outside when I dropped a

picture of me and my daughter

on the train tracks. My daughter

died of cancer and that was the

only picture I had of her. I

knew I had to get it so I went

down and picked it up but my

leg got stuck on the track and

the incoming train was closing

in . The lights were coming

closer and I knew this would be

the end. Everything happened

so quickly that I could barely

think. The train hit me and all I

remember was falling to the

ground and a big light coming

towards me. I woke up not

knowing if I was dead or alive. I

saw my daughter playing in a

park. This was where we played

and had picnics when Mary, my

wife, was still alive. It looked

like they were calling me to join

them. They reached their hands

out to me but I knew that some-

thing was wrong. As soon as I

turned back, I fell and I was

The Dragon

then he secretly went to war. He

breathed very deep and then there

was fire coming out. They won the

war and he became the leader of

the clan.

— Marc Catiwala-an

One day a dragon was born. His

father was the leader of the clan.

When he grew up, he was the

only dragon who couldn’t breathe

fire. No one knew about this, not

even his own family. When it was

his training, he had to survive and

trap food but it wasn’t going to be

easy for him. When all of his

teammates were gone and he was

the only one left, he was very scared

but he passed the training by using

his strength and agility. Instead of

hunting, he destroyed things be-

cause he was not really good at

hunting. They found out that he

can’t breathe fire. When it was war-

time he didn’t go with them but

and I want to enjoy that day with you.

I will come home on June 12 at 12:00

noon. I hope you will take care of

yourself and your mom. Love, Dad.”

Luke told his mom about this and

told her to tell dad to go to school

directly after lunch. It went on as it

was planned and Luke and his father

even had time to bond with each

other.

— James Ching

Luke read the sign

on the bulletin. He

 was worried about

it. His father is an

OFW and he might

not arrive in school for Father’s Day.

He went home full of anxiety in his

heart and he was fearing for the worst.

When he arrived home, he kept quiet

and decided to tell it during dinner.

While waiting for dinner, he tried to

forget about it.. He kept thinking that

maybe it was only a dream but

still, he kept thinking about it.

Dinner came and it went by awk-

wardly quiet. After dinner, he told

his mom about Father’s Day. His

mom cared for him so much that

she took time to call the father but

then a mail arrived. Luke got it

and read it. It said: “Dear Luke, I

just had my salary yesterday and I

will be coming home. I want to

spend Father’s Day with you, son,

The Prince Who Turned into a Firefly

“Why am I even chasing you? You’re not

really that beautiful!” The maiden went

to him and said, “Go find someone bet-

ter than me!” Then the maiden turned

him into a firefly. The lantern that the

prince was holding was to help him find

someone prettier than the maiden.

— Hycanith Chua

Once upon a time there was a prince

who longed for a maiden but when-

ever he meets a maiden, he says,

“Your nose is too fat!” or “Your eye-

brows are too thick!” and many simi-

lar complaints. Many parents were

hurt because of his bad comments

about their daughters. One day he

went hunting in the forest when he

got tired and stopped to rest. Sud-

denly, he saw this very beautiful

maiden. He chased after her. She

got frightened and ran away. The

prince shouted, “Wait! Why are

you running away from me?” He

stopped suddenly and said again,

Treasures

Teachers are treasures.

Treasures are not meant to be measured.

They teach you how to read and write And know about God’s might.

Teachers are people we can trust

And being trusted by other people is a must.

They also discipline you

So you will start to do good things too.

Teachers want you to have the best

Even better than the rest.

These are the things I want to say

To teachers even just for today.

— James Ching

Everyone has a teacher in mind.I think of one who is simple, neat and kind,

She disciplines me with her might

So one day I would shine so bright.

She tells us the difference between right and wrong

So one day I would be more than strong.

She simply cares for my own need

It’s because she wants me to lead.

In each student, she finds their leak

So the whole class would be meek.

I know you always feel tired

But remember you’ll always be admired.

— Chloe Chua

To My Teacher

Stars are my friends

They keep the skies bright

They look down on me

Each and every night

Though there may be tines

When the clouds hide the stars

I still know they’re there

Through the connection in my

heart.

They come out every night

 Without being fetched

The stars just appear

To comfort the wretched.

They glow quietly

In the dark Night Sky

They remind me of beauty

That the days hold tight

The power they bring

Is simply unexplainable.

— Michelle Manglapus

Don’t you hate it when you get a question mark

 Above your head?

It shows that you’ve ran out of ideas and It’s like your brain is dead!

But sometimes having a question mark is good because

It shows that you are curious.

It’s good to ask questions because the one who answers

Thinks you are serious!
