KEY CREATURES OF EARTH, SEA, AND SKY By Georgia Heard, Drawings by Jennifer Owings Dewey

Name ________________________ Date ______ POSSIBLE ANSWERS

Hummingbird

zig-zags . . . all day Humming birds work hard all day to

just get enough food to live.

Dragonfly

stained glass windows The wings are partly transparent and let sunlight go through. It is as pretty

as a stained glass window.

Fish

gills sift air Scientifically fish pull water through

their lungs to get air and be alive. There is air in water!

Eagle

graceful kite Way up high, the eagle soars like a kite

as it is so smooth way up in the air. The wings don't flap much.

Duck

make their own beds The ducks put their heads under their wings and stay warm by covering their

heads. The rest of the body stays warm with feather coverings. In this

way they are their own beds.

Migrating Bird

get lost . . . Birds have instinct or maps in their brains they follow, and just know

where to fly.

Page 5: CREATURES OF EARTH, SEA, AND SKY

Whale

in the deep . . . Whales swim in the deep blue sea.

This poem is the most difficult except to say they are in the deep and we

really can't see them.

Raccoon

trick or treat Raccoons try to trick us into giving

them food and they go out after dark like children on Halloween.

Dolphin

jump in the air Dolphins fly a minute when they jump up and it must feel good as they often

jump up. Children may feel the same thing when

jumping in air or water.

Frog

banjo songs When the frogs are singing together, they sound like a chorus of singers or

musical instruments.

Elephant

hold out ears . . . Elephants, listen closely, be warned

about the hunters who will kill you for your tusks. We don't want you to die.

Snake

sudden new clothes The new snake skin grows underneath

the old before the old one is shed.

Page 6: CREATURES OF EARTH, SEA, AND SKY

Bat

invisible song Bats fly with echo location to

know where bugs and caves are.

Spider

will be fed The orb is the spider's dinner

plate. The spider doesn't stick to the web but other bugs will stick.

The spider will eat what sticks.

Bear

my favorite Teddy bears are more fun as you

can hold and hug them.

Galapagos Tortoise

only one This tortoise is going to be extinct.

Tiger

Will we ever see a tiger again? This entire poem is about animals

that may become extinct. Sad poem. It means she (and we)

hope(s) they live!
