Our report ‘Credit where it’s due: Ending the £3.5 billion Pension Credit scandal’, highlights the low uptake of Pension Credit across Great Britain, and the action that is needed. It also sets out the scale of the issue at national level.

This annex sets out information for each constituency in Great Britain on:

• The number of households receiving Pension Credit

• The average weekly Pension Credit payment

• The predicted number of households entitled to but not receiving Pension Credit

• The predicted total annual amount going unclaimed

This results from analysis carried out by Grant Thornton UK LLP during 2019.

Methodology

a) Estimating the number of households that are entitled to but not receiving Pension Credit across constituencies

These estimates apportion the total number of households entitled to but not receiving Pension Credit for each country, based on the number of households currently receiving Pension Credit.

b) Estimating the total monetary value unclaimed across constituencies

These estimates are based on:

• The total annual amount claimed in each constituency, based on the current number of households receiving Pension Credit and the average weekly payment for the constituency

• The total amount of Pension Credit claimed in England, Wales and Scotland, based on the number of households currently receiving Pension Credit and the average weekly payment for each country

• The current amount claimed in each constituency as a proportion of the total national claim

Data sources

The following DWP data has been used:

• Income-related benefits: Estimates of take-up for year 2016/17 (November 2018)

• DWP data on beneficiaries for November 2018

Where DWP provides a low, central and high estimate, the high estimates have been used.
