ACCLAMATION! Acclaiming the Lord! Shouting praise, and highly exalting our mighty King! This theme ofgreat joy, adoration, and jubilant praise to God is the vision I had in mind when the Lord guided me to producethis new sacred piano CD. Psalm 89:15-16 declares, "Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, whowalk in the light of your presence, O Lord. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in yourrighteousness." Also, in Isaiah 24:14-16, we read, "They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west theyacclaim the Lord's majesty. Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord; exalt the name of the Lord, the God ofIsrael, in the islands of the sea. From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One." It ismy sincere prayer that you will be inspired, your heart will be uplifted, your gaze will turn towards heaven, andyou will draw closer to God as you listen to this new collection of sacred piano works by both historical andcurrent authors, composers, and arrangers.

----The theme of joy in musical context has probably found its most notable setting in the great hymn “Joyful,Joyful, We Adore Thee,” also known as the “Hymn to Joy” or “Ode to Joy.” In fact, this celebrated hymn, set tothe music of the choral movement from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, is often the first, or nearly first, hymn inmost hymnbooks! It seemed most fitting to begin this CD of joy with this excellent D. Kartsonakis arrangementfrom his memorable 1982 Piano Praise volume. This is an arrangement I have performed extensively for manyyears. The history of the many stages that the text and music went through (first text, then music, then new text)is worth noting. German poet, Friedrich Schiller, wrote his original “Ode to Joy” in 1785. In 1824, Beethovenincorporated the text, which celebrated brotherhood and the unity of all mankind, into the final movement of hislast symphony. In 1907, American poet, Henry van Dyke, wrote the sacred poem, “Joyful, Joyful, We AdoreThee,” and set it to Beethoven’s famous theme. Van Dyke’s hymn “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” was then firstpublished in The Presbyterian Hymnal in 1911. Further versions, and arrangements have proceeded to thepresent day. Van Dyke wrote of his hymn: "These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings anddesires in this present time—hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of theage, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow thekingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope." The hymn features an AABA stanzaformat, without refrain. The text is as follows:

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, Opening to the sun above.Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away;Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!All thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise.Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flowery meadow, flashing sea,Singing bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in Thee.Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest,Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest!Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, All who live in love are Thine;Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine. Amen.

Where there is darkness, light.Where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.

----“Total Praise” is a very current and widely performed gospel, choral work. This arrangement, which is my fourthcompletely original arrangement, was an extremely late addition to the recording. I had heard about this piece, and then obtained the original choral score only about one month before the recording date. I dabbled with thisidea and that, making notes and scribbles on the original score. Somehow, the arrangement sounded haphazardand not at all convincing as a result. So, only three days before the recording, I decided I had to ‘bite the bullet’and I whipped out ten blank sheets of staff paper and a pencil, and started writing. After about eight to ten hoursa day of writing (and a near bout of writer's cramp!), I finished the arrangement. Then came the next task oflearning to play it … immediately! This was no easy task, as much of what I wrote is nearly impossible to play.Somehow, thankfully, the Lord helped me to bring all this together, and what you hear on this recording is theresult. I am extremely pleased how all the ideas and elements blended and synthesized so well. This is probablynow one of my most favorite works of all time.

TOTAL PRAISE Lord, I will lift, mine eyes to the hillsKnowing my help is coming from YouYour peace, You give me in time of the stormYou are the source of my strengthYou are the strength of my lifeI lift my hands in total praise to YouAmen, AmenAmen, AmenAmen, AmenAmen, Amen

(The text is based upon Psalm 121:1-2, Psalm 107:28-29, Psalm 73:26, and Psalm 63:4)

----"We Shall Behold Him," the concluding selection on this recording, is one of my longtime, sacred performanceworks. This classic, and magnificent, arrangement by Kartsonakis, has found its way into the hearts andappreciation of many people. -----Our joy is not only manifested in giving praise to God, but also in our obedience and prayers to God. In 2ndChronicles 7, King Solomon was finishing work on the temple of God. This was one of the many ways heacclaimed and gave honor to God. In verse 6 we read, “The priests took their positions, as did the Levites withthe Lord’s musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the Lord and which were used when hegave thanks, saying, ‘His love endures forever’.” Solomon and the people held a festival and celebration, and inverse 10 we read, “…he sent the people to their homes, joyful and glad in heart for the good things the Lord haddone…” Later, we read that Solomon finished the temple of the Lord, and the Lord heard his prayer and chosethe temple for His presence. Jimmy Owens memorable sacred song “If My People Will Pray” (1973) is basedupon verse 14,

“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

This soaring and expressive arrangement, also by Kartsonakis, captures much of the emotional qualities of thewords of Scripture upon which it is based.

----Most often associated with the holy season of Easter, Dallas Holm’s signature work “Rise Again” has gainedwidespread appreciation, and is a delight to hear all year long! The first time I heard this heartfelt vocal work, Iknew that I had to work on a solo piano arrangement of it. The only challenge was somehow melding thecountry and southern gospel style of this piece with my distinctly classical and traditional sacred style of writingand performing. I think somehow the Lord helped me to come up with a suitable blend, and I am delighted toinclude this new arrangement on this recording. This is my third completely original arrangement. I hope youenjoy listening to it, as much as I enjoy performing it!

----“All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia! Alleluia!” Based upon the great, foundational hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King,” this unique and inspiring arrangement was written byone of my very talented, former piano students, Gretchen Hull. I was so taken by this arrangement the first timethat I heard her perform it, that I earnestly requested that I be able to include it on this CD. Not only the styleof the arrangement, but also the title, text, and joyous grandeur of this hymn fit so perfectly with the theme ofthis recording. The text of the hymn is derived from St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun (1225). Thiscanticle, or song, is believed to be among the first works of literature written in the Italian language. The wordsof the hymn are as follows:

All creatures of our God and KingLift up your voice and with us sing,Alleluia! Alleluia!Thou burning sun with golden beam,Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

The Lord’s Prayer (traditional)Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is inheaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not intotemptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

----Praise to God does not always need to be, or should be, in the form of loud, jubilant expressions. At times, it ismost fitting to worship and adore the Lord in soft, quiet, even silent, reverence and meditation. This nextarrangement, written by the prolific and talented Mark Hayes, starts with pure simplicity and calm. Hayesutilizes the simple, but effective song Alleluia, and then through many modulations and chord changes, seguesinto the inspiring song The Majesty and Glory of Your Name. It is a wonderful tribute to not only God’sgracious goodness and blessings to us, but to all of creation in heaven and earth.

----Well-known for its distinctive performances by folk singer, Cat Stevens, the piece ‘Morning has Broken’ provides anice, airy, diversity to the CD. I love the folk sound and the perpetually rolling feel of this piece. The originalarrangement is by former Gaither pianist, Anthony Burger. I have added quite extensively to it, bringing it morein line with the thick, rich chordal styles and textures which I enjoy hearing and performing. The text is veryvisual and has a story-teller’s quality about it. I hope you enjoy this classic, sacred work from approximately fourdecades ago.

----As with the hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King.” the text from the next selection is taken from thewritings of St. Francis of Assisi. This prayer is, in fact, probably his most well-known literary offering. It is agood reminder of what is important in life, and how we should be mindful of the sometimes paradoxical natureof life. This was my second completely original arrangement after The Lord’s Prayer, and I am sure you can hearstylistic similarities in the writing, including my signature tremolo introductions. For the middle (bridge) section,I incorporated a transposed portion of Ernst Dohnanyi’s 4th Rhapsody, a classical work which is a favorite ofmine. It seemed to fit the drama and unfolding of the piece so well. After many introspective and emotionallyturbulent sections, the arrangement builds to a spectacular coda, signifying the great hope of eternal life we asChristians have in our Savior, Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that you will be deeply inspired as you think about thewords of the prayer and relate them to your own life.

ETERNAL LIFELord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me sow love.Where there is injury, pardon.Where there is doubt, faith.Where there is despair, hope. 6 3

(Refrain) O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!Thou rushing wind that art so strongYe clouds that sail in Heaven along,O praise Him! Alleluia!Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,Ye lights of evening, find a voice! Thou flowing water, pure and clear,Make music for thy Lord to hear,O praise Him! Alleluia!Thou fire so masterful and bright,That givest man both warmth and light. And all ye men of tender heart,Forgiving others, take your part,O sing ye! Alleluia!Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,Praise God and on Him cast your care! Let all things their Creator bless,And worship Him in humbleness,O praise Him! Alleluia!Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

Gretchen so skillfully weaved a richly orchestral-sounding and highly pianistic texture throughout this arrangement, and this creates a vast, panoramic listening experience. Her use of quartal writing (parallel fourths), pentatonicscales (five note scales), pandiatonic cluster chords, and polyphony evokes many global cultures, including fareastern as well as western musical styles. She effectively traversed a full spectrum of ancient through contemporarysounds to take the listener on not only a multicultural, but also a multi-spatial and temporal journey. She capturesthe majestic and uplifting qualities of this hymn, and she so evidently brings honor and glory to God through thededicated development of her remarkably creative and masterful arranging and performing talents.

----His Eye Is On the Sparrow -- this next selection has the curious distinction of being the first sacred arrangementthat I ever performed in church, when I was only eight years old! It is a true classic, by prolific sacred writersCivilla Martin and Charles Gabriel, and arranged by Kartsonakis. Its simple and positive melody is appealing, andthe text is deeply meaningful. The theme of the song is inspired by the words of Jesus in the following Scriptureverses: "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to hislife? (Matthew 6:26-27) and "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the groundapart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; youare worth more than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:29-31). Civilla Martin, who wrote the lyrics based uponthe scripture verses above, said this about her inspiration to write the song, “Early in the spring of 1905, my

husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We contracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name ofMr. and Mrs. Doolittle—true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Herhusband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheelchair. Despitetheir afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One daywhile we were visiting with the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them forthe secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle's reply was simple: "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." Thebeauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin andme. The hymn "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" was the outcome of that experience. —Civilla Martin

-----Numerous verses from scripture come to mind in reference to the theme and significance of this nextarrangement, “O How He Loves You and Me” by Kurt Kaiser, arranged by Kartsonakis. In fact, the whole Bibleshows God’s love for us! “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believesin Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) and “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19)are a couple examples of God’s amazing love for us. This simple, but powerful, sacred song focuses on theincredible love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us. With regards to the arrangement, I always appreciate thelyrical qualities of this piece, and the very touching and poignant moments throughout. This is a very intimateand moving love song to the heart. Thank you, Jesus, for your unfathomable love for us.

----‘A composer I am not. However, in 1998 the Lord led me to write a completely original arrangement of “TheLord’s Prayer.” This very well-known hymn, from the scripture passage in Matthew 6:9-13, was composed byorganist and film score composer, Albert Hay Malotte. The actual process of writing this arrangement was verychallenging, and took quite a few months. I first wrote the arrangement with pencil and staff paper, but sincethen, it has been transferred to professional printed notation. I would not have finished the project at all, butwith the grace and divine providence of God, who kept me going until it was completed. I have performed itextensively, and those that have heard it have reacted with great enthusiasm and appreciation. Instead of graftinga classical work with a hymn, I prefer to write completely original material that comprises all the musical depthand rich quality of classical works, yet that enhances and emanates directly from the inspiration of the hymnitself. I feel the result is both seamlessly organic, and profoundly compelling. And I thank the Lord for all ofthis, because none of this came from me. It is entirely a work of art that He breathed through me.’ Those weremy words from my first CD, The Sacred Tradition, which featured this arrangement, the very first arrangementthat I had ever written. It was also the first time I had ever recorded it. Since then, the Lord has helped me writenew arrangements, which are now featured on this recording. To showcase them all together, I have decided toinclude this arrangement again—the track you hear being an entirely new recording of the work. This has beenmy most performed arrangement ever in my entire sacred repertoire, and the arrangement has been presented innumerous churches and other venues by a number of other pianists. It even was featured in an awardperformance at a competition at Carnegie Hall! I feel so grateful how the Lord has blessed this effort in somany ways for His honor and glory. 4 5
