CREEKSIDE ELEMENTARY 1251 O’KEEFFE AVE SUN PRAIRIE, WI 53590 608-834-7700 Creekside Coyote News May-Aug. 2018 Dear Creekside Families, As usual, the year has flown by and I can hardly believe that it’s May al- ready. We’ve had an amazing year and our students and staff have worked so hard over the last eight months to build some amazing aca- demic and social/emotional skills. The last six weeks are always a little intense with the final push to get all of our students ready to advance to the next grade level, while also keeping the students focused as the weather warms up. Final assessments, celebrations of success and planning for next year will mark an excellent end to the school year! Summer is a great time to have less structure and routine for your fami- ly. I enjoy that with my own family. However, loosening up prior to the end of the school year can become a little problematic. Remember to keep their evening/bedtime routines in place until the end of the school year. Kids without enough sleep struggle to get through a seven hour day. I also encourage you to join us for a number of fun events occur- ring at the end of the school year, including: field day, the talent show, our 5th grade celebration, and more. It truly takes a village to raise a child! We thank everyone for your con- tinued dedication to supporting our students as they learn and grow. This is a unique year when we are saying goodbye to a number of our coyotes who will turn into Meadow View Otters this summer. It certainly has been a pleasure working with all of those children/families. We truly believe that “once a coyote, always a coyote” so know that while we will miss you all dearly next year, you’ll always hold a special place in our hearts. Enjoy a safe and relaxing summer! You and your children are special people and we are so very grateful to share this educational journey with you. Cheers, Mrs. Block

I.D.s Required Everyday, Every time

Photo I.D’s When Visiting Schools

To ensure the safety of our students and staff, the Sun Prairie Area District has a pol-icy that all visitors to our schools must show a photo I.D. and register in the office pri-or to entering the main areas of the school or the classroom. The term "all visitors" includes parents, volunteers and anyone coming into school for visits or child pick up. Please remember that we have the best interest of our students in mind. Our re-sponsibility is to keep our students and staff as safe as possible. Knowing who is visiting our schools will help us do that.

Thank you for helping keep our schools safe!

As Stated In The Student Handbook (Please see handbook for complete details) All visitors shall report to the school office when either arriving or leaving the school during the school day. Visitors are required to provide proof of identity when registering to visit a school. Whenever possible, visi-tors shall be asked for a driver’s license, ID card or other credential that contains the name and picture of the visitor. If a visitor does not possess such a credential, and school staff cannot otherwise establish identity, the

visit may occur only under the constant supervision of a school employee.

Idea... Take a picture of your ID with your phone to make it more convenient.

Lost and Found Just a friendly reminder to check the lost and found. We have lost items piling up and would love to get them to their owners. We have some smaller "special" items like glasses and jewelry in the office. Also, please put your student’s name on their belong-ings so we can return them to the rightful owner if they get misplaced. At the end of the year the items left behind will be donated to one of our local dona-tion centers.

Volunteering at School or Fieldtrips"

Background Check Needed Every 3 Years

The Sun Prairie Area School District recog-nizes that volunteers make valuable contribu-tions to the district’s schools and welcomes volunteers into the schools or attend student field trips. District policy requires that a criminal background check be completed prior to volunteering. Prior to attending a child's field trip, becoming a Watchdog or working in a classroom, please make sure you have a criminal background check completed and on file. Students safety is our #1 priority. If you are unsure if you have one on file or have any questions, please contact the school at 608-834-7702 for assistance.

If you need to fill out a form, you can find it on the District website or the school office.

Kindergarten Music Informances Kindergarten this year will host informances, they are informational performances

where parents/guardians are welcome to join their student's music

class. Informances are a great opportunity for our community to learn about the

skills that their students are learning in the music room. They also provide for a

more authentic and intimate interaction with our youngest learners.

Informances will be held in the music room on the following dates and times.

Clevenstine: 5/29 12:00-12:30pm

Kearbey: 5/31 12:40-1:10pm

Smerda : 6/1 12:00-12:30pm

Ramos : 6/1 12:40-1:10pm

2nd grade parents! Mark your calendars! 2nd grade will have their annual all day Camping Day event right her at Creekside on Friday, May 18th. We will need volunteers all day for this fun event. In-formation will come home soon, save the date!

Mrs. Rubiano (Additional Camp-

ing Day!) & Mr. Latino’s class will have a camping day on May 23rd. Save the date, more info to come.

What's Happening on the Playground Well it looks like Mother Nature finally turned the page on the calendar and Spring has arrived!! The Playground Teachers have some fun things scheduled to end out the school year. Chalk drawing fun, Hula Hoop Tag and bubbles...lots of bubbles. We are now the proud owners of a bubble machine and can't wait to fire this thing up!! The week of May 28th we will be having a beach party on the playground. Kids can wear their sunglasses, bring a beach towel to sit on to chill and enjoy the sun and warm weather. Fun things are happening in the Café too. On May 4th we will be having "Macasty the 4th Be With You Day." Your kiddos can wear their Star Wars attire and will en-joy a special movie at lunch. We will also be having an Outside/Inside Picnic at lunch time on May 17th. The kids can choose to eat outside or to sit inside the café. Long table cloths will be put out both inside and out for the kiddos to sit and enjoy their lunch. The Playground Teachers have enjoyed hanging with your kiddos at recess and loved seeing them enjoy the games and the playground. Now onto planning next year's fun!! See you on the playground!! The Playground Teachers

May Tidbits from the Advanced Learner Program:

5th/6th Grade Regional Math Meet: In April, Aurora Swissdorf, Yogitha Rajkumar, Nolan Wineke, & Colin Leiterman qualified to participate at the regional meet. Congrats to these hard working coyotes! Success Habits lessons: The A.L.P Department started a pilot called Suc-cessful Habits (at every school) this semester. This group focuses on as-pects of self-discovery including: self-awareness, expectations (real & per-ceived), identifying needs, resiliency, and developing personal identity. Self-assessment, talent development, personal guidance, and emotional intelligence are all ad-dressed through the lessons (six lessons spread throughout the spring). April’s lesson was on recog-nizing realistic and unrealistic expectations (home, school, and self) and how to reframe unrealistic ones (or have conversations with adults about them). I plan to continue including all identified learners unless a parent does not want their child to participate (let me know).

Ideas for Summer Opportunities: http://www.sunprairie.k12.wi.us/alps/miscellaneousprograms/2018%20Summer%20Opportunities.pdf Lastly, I wanted to just say again, I have very much enjoyed this role teaching and learning beside your amazing young learners; they truly have helped me grow as an educator. But I also have to say, I am so thrilled to join Creekside full-time next year as part of the 4th grade team. As this 2017-18 school year winds down, Mrs. VanDerKamp (currently the A.L.P.S. at Horizon) will be shadowing me a day here and there to start making connections at Creekside as well and to provide a smooth transition for your children. If your child will be attending a new elementary school next year, I have already met with their new A.L.P.S. (where possible) and will have shared all my current data with the new A.L.P.S. to help with class placement/clustering at the new school. This is true even if your child is just on my watch list. The Advanced Learner Program Specialists will be in consistent communication to make sure your child transitions as smooth as possible. If your child is going to Token Springs or Meadow View, the A.L.P.S. at both schools will be Mrs. Burgess (the current A.L.P.S. at Royal Oaks and Eastside). If your child is headed to middle school, Mr. Brandl and Mr. Knoploh also have met with us to discuss your child. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing children with me these past three years, I could not be any luckier to be here at Creekside! Have an amazing summer,

Middle School Band Info

Get In Step…Join the Band!! 2018

The middle school band directors are busy preparing for our next wonderful class of new

musicians. We look forward to meeting everyone. Students start on flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba and percussion. Students interested in percussion will have 2 workshops they can attend to help them prepare for their audition. There are several dates that students and parents should be aware of in April and May that are “instrumental” to the process of joining band.

April Mouthpiece Sampling – On April 18, April 19th and April 20th we will be visiting all the elementary schools to do mouthpiece fittings with students during the school day. The mouthpiece is the top part of a brass or woodwind instrument and the most important part of the instrument. This will give us good information about what instrument or instruments would best suit your child. Thursday, April 26– Percussion Workshop at Patrick Marsh 2:30-3:30 PM This is the first of 2 workshops students can attend to help them prepare for their percussion audition. We will cover some basic skills necessary to play instruments in the percussion family.

Monday, April 30-Percussion Workshop at Prairie View 3:30-4:30 PM This is the second workshop for students to attend to help them prepare for their percussion audition. Students can at-

tend one or both workshops. Tuesday, May 1- Percussion Auditions at your middle school 3:00-4:30 PM Percussion auditions are for any student interested in being considered to play instruments in the percussion family. We will be available from 3:00-4:30 p.m. at your middle school in the music area for any 5th grader interested in percussion. Parents can sign up for an audition time online. If you are unable to attend this day, you must contact Mr. Quaglieri at 834-7839 or Mrs. Haraldson at 834-7627 to schedule a time before May 1st. Thursday, May 3th -Middle School Visit during the day 5th grade students will be visiting the middle school. All students will have seen a short video of the instruments in gen-eral music class. Again, Patrick Marsh music department will be performing for the students that morning. Monday, May 7- Middle School Parent/Student Orientation 6-7 PM at Prairie View and Patrick Marsh Instrument Fitting Appointment Sign Up/Ask the directors questions This evening is scheduled as a middle school orientation for 5th grade students and their parents. You will be able to schedule your instrument fitting appointment (where you try your top 2 choices), so bring your family calen-dar. Remember to contact us for an appointment if you are unable to attend orientation. Even students auditioning for percussion will need an appointment to either finish the process of signing up, or to pick another instrument if not se-lected for percussion. Students who may have missed us in their building can try mouthpieces at their instrument fitting appointment.

Tuesday, May 15 & Wednesday, May 16 Instrument Fitting Appointments at Patrick Marsh for both schools We will have instruments available for students so that students may try their first and second choices of instruments. This is the evening you make your final selection and make arrangements with the music store for an instrument and sup-plies for the fall. All appointments are at Patrick Marsh and are about 20 minutes long. Even students auditioning for percussion will need an appointment to either finish the process of signing up, or to pick another instrument if not selected for percussion. To help students get off to a great start for the fall, we will be offering a free summer school class called “Band Starts Now” from August 20-24, at your child’s middle school. A schedule for the class will be in the band booklet that students receive at orientation. Students can register for this class at their instrument fitting appointment.

You can contact Mr. Quaglieri from Prairie View at 834-7839 ([email protected]) or Mrs. Haraldson from Patrick Marsh at 834-7627 ([email protected]) with any questions you might have.

Transportation News: Eating On The Bus Please remember that there is absolutely no eating allowed on dis-trict buses. Many students have life-threatening food allergies that could be affected by others eating on the bus. If your child does not get a chance to eat breakfast at home before school please make sure he/she knows to wait until they arrive at school before eating to ensure the safety of everyone. If your child is given a snack or treat at the end of the day we also ask that they eat it at school or wait until they get home. Use of Cell Phones & Personal Electronics Cell phones and personal electronics are allowed on school buses. However, stu-dents are asked to please be respectful and responsible when using their phones and other devices. Headphones or earbuds are required when listening to music or videos as to not distract the driver or disrupt other students. Absolutely no flash or bright lights are allowed - this is a major safety issue for the driver. All school and district policies and procedures relating to personal electronic devices also apply while students are on the bus. Please refer to your child’s handbook and Policy JFCK, Possession of Personal Electronic Devices for further information.
