    Poem s by R obert Creeley (1926-*

APoemIf the water formsthe forms of the weeds, there -

a long life is not by thata necessarily happy one.

My friend. Wereckon on a simple

    agreement,the fashion of a stone

    underground.

    1. Apart from his essayistic work and his key role in 20 ,h Century American poetics, Creeley can be interestingto Spanish readers of poetry because of his sense of measure, completely alien to our tradition. His poelryjoins the idea of the work as "event" (closely related to "abstract expressionism" in painting, movement hehad so many connections w ith) and the syncopations of jazz, together with Pound and W illiam s' legacy - ihecontinuing search for preciseness, for acknowledgement of every ton of common speech and evcry tura ofthe experience it faces- , all taken to the very border of minimalism. The poem has the rythm of a speechshown in the process of being articulated, a speech that appears as spontaneous, faltering and scarcelypretentious (its apparent lack of ttanscendence fully charged with irony and/or nostalgia), though having astrong emotive and meditative content. Perceived in their birth process, so to say, lines end were they are notsupposed to, words are separated, stopped, cut down in pieces and fhus acquire an effect and emphasisunavailable in most modern poetry.

These versions ntend to bring the particular quality of Creeley 's poetry to the Spanish langu age. On theofher hand, these poems can be considered as a suggestion for anyone to read Creeley in English, hear it,mouth it, study it, maybe transate it, as O'Hara would say, "You just go on your nerve" .

    The business

To be in love is like going out-side to see what kind of day

it is. Do notmistake me. If you love

her how prove sheloves also, except that it

occurs, a remote chance onwhich you stake

yourself? But barter forthe Iridian was a m eans of sustenance. There are records.

    They

I wondered what hadhappened to the chords. There was a music,

they were followinga pattern. It wasan intention perhaps.

    No field

but they walkin it. No place

without them, anydiscretion is useless. They want a time, they

have a time, eachone in his place, anendless arrival.

    Ellos

Me preguntaba qu habapasado con los acordes.Haba una m sica,

seguan todosun esquema.
