Though the history of the hood, cap and gown dates back to the 14th century; it was not until the 19th century that colleges and universities attempted to adopt a common code to distinguish the degree, field of study and university or college conferring the degree. The tassel color signifies the field of study. The field of nursing is signified by the apricot color. Both the baccalaureate and master’s degree tassels are an apricot color. The gold, metallic colored tassel is reserved solely for doctoral graduates as it represents the highest degree earned.
Gowns, though all black, do have distinguishing characteristics signifying the degree earned. The baccalaureate gown is a simple gown with the distinguishing characteristic being a long, pointed sleeve. The Master’s gown is also distinguished by a sleeve that is more closed with only an opening in the wrist. The doctoral gown is the most elaborate and is adorned with velvet panels and sleeve bars.
The hood is the most distinguishing characteristic of academic regalia and is reserved only for graduates being awarded a master’s or doctoral degree. The hood’s colors signify both the field of study and the institution conferring the degree. The apricot color represents the field of nursing while the blue color represents Creighton University. The doctoral hood is more elaborate in that it is longer and the colored trim is wider than that associated with the master’s degree hood.
History of the Nursing PinAlthough the tradition of pinning can be traced back to the Knights of the Order of St. John the Baptist and the Crusades of the 12th Century, in American nursing, the tradition began in 1880 at the Bellevue Hospital nursing program in New York City. Today, schools of nursing across the country continue to offer graduates the opportunity to wear a pin that is unique to that school. No two are exactly alike.
The Creighton University College of Nursing pin was designed in 1964 by one of our first graduates of the four-year BSN program, Michael McCabe.
The pin is fashioned after the Creighton family coat of arms placed on a shield with the nursing college’s motto: God Send Grace, signifying our dependence on the help and goodness of God. The coat of arms is supported by two lions; the lion has long been an image of courage, strength, and diplomacy. At the top of the crest is an earl coronet, an emblem of a family of peerage. The blue on the pin symbolizes loyalty and truth.

Honorary Alumni Citation
Linda Lazure, PhD, RN, FAAN
For her dedication to the College of Nursing, her commitment to patient care advocacy and her continued support of nursing professionals throughout the state of Nebraska, associate professor emerita Linda Lazure, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the recipient of the Honorary Alumni Award from Creighton University College of Nursing.
During her 35 years with Creighton University College of Nursing, Lazure served in faculty and administrator roles. Her contributions to the College of Nursing include developing the Leadership Scholars program, facilitating adoption of new programs and revised curriculum, and providing mentorship to faculty and students.
Most recently, Lazure was named a recipient of the prestigious American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 2018 State Award for Excellence. The award recognizes nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner advocates for excellence in practice or for a significant contribution toward increasing awareness and recognition of NPs. In October 2017, the Nebraska Nurses Association (NNA) inducted Lazure to the NNA Hall of Fame for her lifelong contributions to the field of nursing and her impact on health in Nebraska. In 2016 she was elected into the prestigious Academy of American Nurses for her career impact. The Academy’s approximately 2,700 members, known as Fellows, are nursing’s most accomplished leaders in education, practice and research.
Lazure has been an influential member of the American Nurses Association since 1970 and has actively served at the national, state and local levels. Lazure was instrumental in the negotiation and passage of two challenging Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) scope-of-practice laws (1996 and 2015). Full practice authority, allowing NPs to practice to the full extent of their education and expand access to care across Nebraska, was signed into law in 2015. Nebraska became the 20th state to enact such legislation. Lazure was the only nurse to serve on the Nebraska Unicameral’s Legislative Resolution 22/422 workgroup, charged with developing a health policy blueprint aligning state priorities and resources.
Her legislative acumen and coalition-building led to gubernatorial appointments to several organizations, including the Nebraska Board of Health, Center for Nursing, and Board of Nursing, which furthered her health care legislation and policy influence statewide. She steered total reorganization of health professional practice acts, resulting in the Uniform Credentialing Act (UCA). Further, she crafted legislation and testified for multiple bills to improve rural and underserved health care, provide nursing student educational funding, and ease interstate barriers to practice for all professions, resulting in better health care for Nebraskans.
