What used to be the “golden years” of life for seniors is now turning into any opportunity to spend even more time with their youngest family members. Nowadays, a growing number of grandparents are called on to provide child care for their grandkids, many of whom are growing up in two-income households. Others are helping to raise grandkids while providing fi nancial assistance for adult children who may not be able to live on their own.
This trend has been corroborated in a few recent studies. Information from the Pew Research Center showed 7.7 million children in the United States were living in the same household as one of their grandparents in 2011. A University of Chicago analysis of a decade of data based on interviews with 13,614 grandparents, ages 50 and older, found that 61 percent of grandparents provided at least 50 hours of care for their grandchildren during any given year between 1998 and 2008. And an April 2012 study for the MetLife Mature Market Institute and the nonprofi t Generations United, an intergenerational policy group, found that 74 percent of respondents provided weekly child care or babysitting service for grandkids.
Grandparents often cite helping their own children fi nancially as well as staying in touch with
grandchildren as motivating factors behind providing care. According to Generations United, staying in touch with grandkids can give seniors a feeling of self-worth and improve their overall health.
When spending so much time together, grandparents may develop special relationships with their grandchildren, who may benefi t from the knowledge and wisdom offered by their elders. The following are some lessons grandparents can share with youngsters.
* Empathy: By sharing stories of how things were when they were younger, when opportunities may
have been more scarce, grandparents can help teach grandchildren empathy. Grandchildren may learn to be grateful for the things they have and the people around them, rather than taking what they have for granted.
* Family history: Grandparents can tell grandchildren about family members, including youngsters’ own parents, and shed light on the generations that came before them. Looking through photos or watching old movies can provide the avenue by which to start conversations about family history and give children opportunities to ask questions.
* Interests: Children may be excited about learning new skills or hobbies taught to them by their grandparents. Anything from gardening to woodworking can be shared.
* Respect: Children who grow up respecting their grandparents may have an increased tendency to respect authority fi gures outside their homes, which may help kids grow up to be more courteous and kind.
Grandchildren also offer benefi ts to their grandparents. Companionship, new experiences and conversation can help keep grandparents’ minds sharp and bodies active well into their golden years.

The virtues of saving for retirement are extolled from the moment young men and women begin their professional careers. Such advice is sound, and though retirement is a long way off from the start of one’s career, those professionals who heed these words of wisdom and start saving early are bound to benefit down the road.
But even the best advice can fall on deaf ears from time to time, and many people
simply don’t save enough for retirement. A 2013 survey from Fidelity Investments revealed just how much financial trouble the average American is likely to be in upon retirement. The survey asked more than 2,000 participants a range of questions on topics, including their health, retirement and saving habits, and found that the average baby boomer, which includes those born between 1946 and 1964, was on track to reach just 81 percent of their retirement income
needs. Those needs include food, shelter and medical care. The study also found that 40 percent of participants across all generations were saving less than 6 percent of their salaries for retirement. That’s especially troubling when considering financial planners often advise men and women to save 10 to 15 percent of their salaries for retirement.

retirement accounts and savings, can shed light on how rosy or bleak a person’s retirement looks. Young professionals have time to make up for their indiscretions, but men and women over 50 who haven’t saved enough for retirement must get to work immediately to ensure their retirement years are comfortable. The following are a handful of ways men and women can catch up on retirement savings.
• Start spending less. The easiest way to catch up on retirement savings is to start spending less. Men and women over 50 know that the sand in their earnings hourglass is running out, and those behind on retirement savings need to make the most of their earnings in the years ahead. That means cutting out any unnecessary expenses so that money can be used to save for retirement. Examine all of your monthly and annual expenses to fi nd ways to trim some fat. You many want to downsize your vehicle to a less expensive and more fuel-effi cient make and model. Golfers can cancel their country club memberships in favor of golfi ng on more affordable public courses that don’t charge hefty annual membership fees. Slashing spending won’t be easy, but doing so is the fi rst step toward catching up on your retirement savings.
• Contribute more to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you have not been contributing the maximum amount to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, start doing so. This is especially benefi cial if your employer matches your contributions. Contributing more to such plans should not drastically affect your take-home pay now if the plan is a pre-tax plan like a 401(k).
• Make IRA catch-up contributions. The Internal Revenue service allows men and women over the age of 50 to make annual catch-up contributions up to $5,500. These contributions must be made to a retirement plan via elective deferrals, and there are additional requirements as well. Men and women over 50 interested in making catch-up contributions to their retirement accounts can learn more at www.irs.gov.
• Put more in traditional savings accounts. Though it’s best to put as much money into tax-advantaged accounts, if you are already maxing out your contributions to such accounts it’s still good to sock away money into a traditional taxable savings account. It’s unwise to expect your retirement accounts to fully fund your lifestyle in retirement, so you will need, or at least want, a substantial amount of money in savings. The benefi t here is the money you put into traditional savings accounts has already been taxed so you won’t incur any bills from the tax man once you begin to use that money down the road.
• Postpone retirement. Though it’s not ideal for men and women with a target retirement date in mind, postponing the day you call it quits is another way to catch up on retirement savings. Postponing retirement allows you to build a more substantial retirement portfolio while also decreasing the amount of time you will need to rely on that money. This gives you more fl exibility in retirement. In addition, Americans who work longer can increase their Social Security benefi t because working longer should allow them to delay the day they start taking Social Security payments. Men and women who can wait until age 70 to accept such payments will receive larger monthly payments as a result.
Studies have shown that men and women are simply not saving enough to fi nance their retirements. But there are myriad ways for those over 50 to start catching up.

Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of people across the globe. In the United States alone, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates one in eight older men and women has the disease, which is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country.
Few families have not been affected by Alzheimer’s disease, and many relatives of those with the disease fully understand the role family history can play. Research into the disease is ongoing, and it’s already yielded valuable information that may help reduce the prevalence of this devastating disease in the years to come.
One byproduct of researchers’ efforts is the discovery that it may be possible to prevent or delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease through the implementation of a combination of healthy lifestyle choices. The following are a few healthy habits that may help men and women reduce their risk for Alzheimer’s.
* Exercise regularly. A study conducted by Scottish researchers and published in the journal Neurology in 2012 touted exercise as the most effective way for adults to protect their brains from Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers examined roughly 700 70-year-old participants, all of whom were born in 1936, who were asked to report their levels of physical activity. Each participant then received an MRI at age 73. Those tests revealed that the participants who were more physically active showed less brain shrinkage and fewer white matter lesions, both of which are indicators of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation reports that physical exercise reduces a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 50 percent and can even slow further deterioration in those who have already begun to develop the cognitive problems associated with Alzheimer’s. Researchers continue to study the relationship between physical activity and the development of Alzheimer’s diseases, but the evidence is mounting that regular exercise, regardless of a person’s age, is a great way to reduce risk for Alzheimer’s.
* Eat healthy. What you put into your body may also reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The brain operates at its best when it is fueled with a healthy diet that includes fresh fruit and vegetables, healthy fats and lean protein. A heart-healthy diet is also brain-healthy, and researchers have found a potential link between heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Researcher Larry Sparks of the Sun Health Research Institute
How to reduCe your risk for AlzHeimer’sin Arizona and formerly of the Kentucky medical examiner’s office studied brain tissues with a goal of finding early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. He discovered that those who had the telltale plaques of Alzheimer’s disease also had heart disease, suggesting heart disease may be a forerunner of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association feels this link between the two will only grow stronger in the years to come, suggesting that a heart-healthy diet that reduces a person’s risk of heart disease may also reduce
the risk for Alzheimer’s down the road. More information on a heart-healthy diet is available at www.heart.org.
* Stimulate yourself mentally. Mental stimulation can help the brain stay sharp, and men and women who find ways to stay mentally stimulated can reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Embrace activities that require communication and interaction with others, and find time for additional tasks that can stimulate your brain. These may include studying a foreign

language, reading, trying your hand at mentally stimulating puzzles such as crosswords or Sudoku, and other activities that emphasize organization. Such activities are essentially workouts for your brain that can help it stay sharp as you age.
* Remain socially active. Staying socially active into older adulthood is important for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that research has indicated the brain functions better when men and women are not isolated from others. Memory and cognition are stronger when people remain socially active and engaged in their society, so retirees should look for ways to revive their social lives as a means to protecting their brains from the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease remains an enigma in many ways. But ongoing research continues to show that men and women can take measures to actively prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and improve their quality of life as a result.

After 50Exercise is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Including exercise in your daily routine can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and exercise can even sharpen mental acuity, reduce anxiety and improve mood. But as benefi cial as exercise can be, many men and women, particularly men and women over the age of 50, who have not laced up their sneakers in years are hesitant to begin an exercise regimen for a variety of reasons, potentially putting their long-term health at risk.
Regardless of a person’s age, beginning a new exercise regimen can be intimidating. But it’s especially so for men and women over the age of 50, who might not know where to begin or how to approach adopting a healthier lifestyle. According to the National Institute on Aging, the following are a few points men and women should know as they attempt to improve their physical fi tness with a more active lifestyle.
* Exercise is safe even if you have not been physically active in a long time. Many older men and women worry that suddenly embracing

physical fi tness after years of inactivity may be detrimental to their health. But that’s only true if men and women don’t exercise caution at the outset of their routines. When beginning the routine, take things very slowly at fi rst, choosing to walk or bike every day rather than hitting the treadmill and adjusting it to maximum resistance. When strength training, start off with very little weight so your muscles can grow acclimated to the motions and you can get the exercises down pat. As you grow more comfortable and your body starts to feel more up to the challenges of daily exercise, you can begin to gradually alter your cardiovascular and strength training workouts to make them more challenging.
* Exercise can make existing medical conditions more manageable. Men and women over the age of 50 who have preexisting medical conditions are likely to fi nd that exercise alleviates rather than exacerbates their physical problems. The NIA notes that studies have shown that regular exercise and physical activity can benefi t people with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. But it’s still recommended that men and women with preexisting medical conditions consult with their physicians before making any lifestyle changes. Some conditions may affect a person’s ability to be active, and it’s best to get the go-
ahead from a physician before beginning an exercise regimen. Doctors may even suggest certain activities that have been known to alleviate particular conditions.
* Exercise reduces fatigue, so sitting around to preserve strength is not effective. Exercise improves strength and energy levels, so sitting on the sideline to preserve your strength is counterproductive and could lead to serious medical problems. The “Report on Physical Activity and Health” from the U.S. Surgeon General’s offi ce noted that men and women who are inactive are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who are more active. While getting adequate rest and giving your body ample time recover from physical activity is essential, your body won’t benefi t by avoiding exercise to preserve your strength. However, even moderate physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce fatigue.
* No one is too old to exercise. It’s not uncommon for men and women in their golden years to think they are too old to exercise. Some may feel that their toned down workouts cannot possibly be making much of an impact thanks to the physical limitations old age has put on their bodies, while others may think it’s unwise for someone in their 70s or 80s to be physically active. But no one is too old to exercise, as exercise helps the body stay strong and fi t even when you can no longer max out on the bench press or squat hundreds of pounds. Scaling back your exercise routine will be necessary as you get older, but that does not mean you cannot still enjoy and benefi t from physical activity.
Continuing to exercise as you age is a great way to improve your quality of life and stay as active as possible well into your golden years.

CrossFit is an increasingly popular exercise program that combines various training methods into a single workout routine. A combination of strength training, plyometrics, speed training, Olympic- and power-style weight lifting, kettle bells, body weight exercises, gymnastics, and endurance exercise, CrossFit attempts to target what its creators consider the major components of physical fi tness, including cardiorespiratory fi tness, stamina, muscle strength and endurance, fl exibility, agility, accuracy, speed, power, balance, and coordination.
CrossFit workouts are renowned for their intensity, and many CrossFit athletes commit to working out three to fi ve times per week. While many more traditional workouts include brief breaks for rest in between sets and exercises, CrossFit regimens require that athletes go right
from one workout to the next, performing their workout in a circuit format that can be completed in a matter of minutes.
Hundreds of CrossFit exercises exist, but the primary exercises use the entire body. Such exercises may include pushing, pulling, running, rowing, and squatting. Though CrossFit continues to attract more men and women looking to get fi t, it's important that beginners work only with professionals with extensive CrossFit experience, as the exercises and intensity associated with CrossFit training can be very dangerous for men and women with no prior CrossFit experience.

Homemade eatsAdd onion rings to your BBQBackyard barbecues typically leave all the preparation to the family grillmaster. But the menu at such a soiree need not be exclusive to grilled foods. Hosts who want to give their guests something a little different can pass around a hearty helping of “Beer-Batter Onion Rings” courtesy of Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press).
Beer-Batter Onion Rings
Beer-Batter Onion Rings Serves 4 to 6
Flour mixture2 pounds all-purpose fl our3/4 cup granulated garlic1/2 cup granulated onion3 tablespoons kosher salt
Batter6 extra-large eggs2/3 cup all-purpose fl our2 tablespoons baking powder2 teaspoons cayenne pepper1 tablespoon kosher salt1 teaspoon paprika11/2 teaspoons lemon pepper11/2 teaspoons garlic powder1/2 teaspoon onion powder1/4 teaspoon dried basil11/2 cups ale beer
Onions2 pounds large yellow onions, peeled and cut into
3/4-inch slices4 cups canola oil
1. Sift all the ingredients for the fl our mixture to-gether into a large bowl.
2. Blend the eggs for the batter in the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment on medium, or in a large mixing bowl if using a hand mixer.
3. Reduce the mixing speed to low and add all the dry batter ingredients. Beat until incorporated. Add the ale and transfer to a large shallow bowl or baking dish.
4. Set up a breading station with the fl our mixture, the batter and a clean sheet pan.
5. For each onion ring, dredge the onion in fl our, then in the batter, then in the fl our again. Place the twice-breaded onion ring on the sheet pan (making sure to keep ring separated), and repeat the process until you’ve breaded all the onion rings. Refrigerate the rings for 10 to 15 minutes or fry immediately.
6. Add the oil to a large and deep saute pan or electric skillet, so it is one-third full, and heat it to 340 F.
7. Fry the rings in batches, being careful not to crowd the pan. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate and let cool for several minutes before serv-ing to prevent burns.
Suggested serving: Serve with ranch dressing.
