Cress Manufacturing Company Inc., is a leader in the industry of manufacture of electric furnaces. We are an organization that provides services and goods for the heat treating industry. Our goal is to achieve an excellent product to satisfy the needs and requirements of our customers. Cress was founded in 1973, as a company with a simple concept to provide exceptionally high quality products and services. With this goal in mind, Cress has evolved into a very important manufacturer and distributor of heat treating furnaces, in the United States and many other countries. We manufacture, export and distribute heat treating furnaces for the metal industry, quartz glass, industrial ceramics, jewelry, porcelain, pottery, ornamental ceramics and many other applications.

Furnace Selection Our industrial furnaces can be classified as one of two basic types, “Heat Treating Furnaces” also known as

hardening furnaces and “Draw Furnaces” also known as annealing, tempering or forced convection furnaces.

Heat treat (Hardening) furnaces have higher heat output power than draw furnaces due to the elevated

temperatures at which they operate. Heat transfer to the tool steel is accomplished by a very efficient

process called direct radiation. Temperature uniformity in these furnaces is best in the red heat range.

Normal maximum temperature is 2250 °F (1232 °C). Optional 2400 °F (1316 °C) maximum temperature

versions are available.

Draw furnaces are used for tempering and other low temperature processes. They normally operate

at temperatures below red heat range where heat transfer to the tool steel is accomplished by the process

of convection heat transfer. To increase convection efficiency, these furnaces are equipped with a fan in

the heating chamber to move air (Forced Convection). This delivers a temperature uniformity of ± 10 °F

(± 6 °C) or better. Maximum temperature is 1250 °F (677 °C). Optional 2000 °F (1093 °C) maximum

temperature versions are available.

Heat treating processes consist of two basic steps, hardening and tempering.

Hardening processes occur at high temperatures that are well into the red heat range. Drawing, tempering

and annealing processes normally occur at temperatures below red heat range.

When a part is hardened, it is heated to a high temperature, held there for a required time period, then

removed from the furnace to be quenched (Cooled). This is usually accomplished by submerging the part into a

liquid quenching material or by placing the part on a cooling rack in still air. The part should only be cooled to

about 150 °F (66 °C), and then placed into a furnace at the tempering temperature. Due to the heat treat furnace

not being able to cool as fast as the part, it is best to have a separate furnace for each step of the process.

For our company, innovation is essential to transform a good idea into a product or service of high value to our customers. We can adapt to the needs of our customers; therefore, if you have something in mind we can build it for you. With these ideas in mind, we strive to provide better services and products that will last and provide years of service.

Digital temperature controls fall into two basic types, process controllers and high limit controls (over temperature controls). Process Controls handle the temperature and time requirements of the heat treat processes. Th ese controls come in two types, non-programmable (single set point) and programmable. Non-Programmable controls such as the model 935 are a single set point control, you simply input the desired temperature, along with a length of time to hold this temperature once achieved. Th e furnace heats to the desired temperature as fast as possible, holds for the amount of time, then ends the process. At the end of the process, the control can either hold the temperature or let the furnace cool down. Th e timer can be disabled. When disabled the control only requires a temperature setting input. Th e furnace will stay at the set temperature until changed or turned off . Th is is the least expensive standard control. Programmable Controls such as the models SD4R

and the F4H allow the heat up rate to be controlled, temperature can be ramped down as well as ramped up, multi-step heat treating can be input as a single process, and heat treat process programs can be stored in the controls memory for easy and accurate repeatability. In manual mode (non-program), the controls work the same as the model 935 with the timer disabled. High Limit Controls such as the model LV help protect the furnace and load in the case of a failure in the primary (process) control or other related primary control loop components. Th e high limit control loop is completely independent of the primary control loop. All control types are available with an optional audible alarm feature, which can signal a given process point or end of process. Th e programmable process controls are available with an optional data communication package which allows full control interface with a computer.
