TIME SPANS TIMESPANS is created in the spirit of the late American Composer Earle Brown (1926-2002) Earle Brown was a major force in contemporary music and a leading composer of the American avant-garde. Since the 1950s his conducting techniques and experiments with “time notation,” improvisation, and open-form compositional structure have become part of contemporary compositional usage. Among Brown’s most frequently performed and reinterpreted works is DECEMBER 1952, the score of which is a stark, abstract series of floating rectangles – a musical equivalent to a Calder mobile.

JACK QUARTET JACK Quartet has performed to critical acclaim around the world and is the recipient of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, New Music USA’s Trailblazer Award and the CMA/ASCAP* Award for Adventurous Programming. JACK has appeared at prestigious music venues and festivals globally.

TALEA ENSEMBLE Recipient of the 2013 CMA/ASCAP* Award for Adventurous Programming, Talea Ensemble has presented important world premieres of new works by composers including Pierre Boulez, Tristan Murail, Olga Neuwirth, John Zorn, Unsuk Chin, Rand Steiger, Beat Furrer and Fausto Romitelli.

ATTENDING COMPOSERS

DAVID ADAMCYK creates musical works for the concert hall and the theatrical stage. He recently completed a doctorate from McGill University, Montreal and has participated in IRCAM’s composition program Cursus in Paris. His interest in technology has pushed him to explore various ways to combine electronic devices with acoustic instruments.

OSCAR BETTISON is described as possessing “an unconventional lyricism and a menacing beauty.” His recent work has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, musikFabrik, Slagwerk Den Haag, So Percussion, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the New York Philharmonic Contact! series and the Berkeley Symphony.

ZOSHA DI CASTRI is a Canadian composer/pianist living in New York. Her work extends beyond purely concert music including projects with electronics, installations, and collaborations with video and dance. This year, she will work with several symphonies around the country. She is also finishing a doctorate in composition at Columbia University.

ANTHONY CHEUNG is a composer and pianist. As a performer and advocate for new music, he is Artistic Director of the Talea Ensemble, which he co-founded in 2007. His music has been commissioned by the Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, New York Philharmonic, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin.

SEAN SHEPHERD has quickly gained admiration and return engagements with major ensembles and performers across the U.S. and Europe. He recently completed his tenure as the Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow of the Cleveland Orchestra, culminating with the premiere of Tuolumne in April 2013, written for Franz Welser-Möst and the orchestra.

AMY WILLIAMS is a composer and pianist specializing in contemporary music. She has recorded extensively and performed world-wide, particularly with her piano duo. She is currently Associate Professor of Composition at the University of Pittsburgh and Artistic Director of the New Music on the Point Festival in Vermont.

COMPOSER TALK Thomas Fichter, Artistic Director TIME SPANS, in conversation with the composers David Adamcyk, Oscar Bettison, Anthony Cheung, Zosha Di Castri, Sean Shepherd, Amy Williams.

DON PASQUALE Gaetano Donizetti’s delightful comedy has been an audience favorite since its premiere in 1843. The elderly and vain Don Pasquale decides he will marry the pretty young Norina, but she has other plans, and sets out on a course to get her own way with the help of the wily Doctor Malatesta. Donizetti’s tuneful score expertly traces the high spirits and humanity of this ageless story. Renowned bass Kevin Glavin stars in the title role along with members of the Crested Butte Opera Studio. Fenlon Lamb directs, with David Stern leading the Festival Symphony Orchestra.

HOME SOIRÉE - A SPECIAL EVENING WITH TENOR BARRY BANKS The celebrated and engaging tenor returns as Artist-In-Residence this season.

BARRY BANKS’ outstanding ability in roles by Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti has brought him to the attention of the world’s leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Milan, English National Opera and the Salzburg Festival. He is now at the height of his career. Join us for this not-to-be-missed opportunity to see this great artist in an up-close intimate setting.

JUL 21

CRESTED BUTTE OPERA STUDIO In addition to their starring roles in Don Pasquale, members of the festival’s acclaimed opera training program will be featured in nearly a dozen performances, including an intimate cabaret evening, an opera gala with the Festival Symphony Orchestra, a special late-night performance at a local bar entitled Opera on Tap, and in master classes with tenor Barry Banks and dramaturg Cori Ellison.

HOME SOIRÉE: FRANK VIGNOLA AND VINNY RANIOLO The dynamic ‘Frank & Vinny’ show has been taking the guitar world by storm. They inject comedy and showmanship alongside dazzling virtuosity to deliver an eclectic set of popular tunes crossing all sorts of barriers into every performance. Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top ensembles, including the Boston Pops and the New York Pops. Guitar legend Les Paul named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitar List” for the Wall Street Journal. At the age of 28, Vinny Raniolo has already proved himself to be among the elite. He has performed and recorded with Bucky Pizzarelli, Tommy Emmanuel and David Grisman, just to name a few. Since Frank and Vinny teamed up in 2008, they have performed over 1,000 shows at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in the world.

FRANK VIGNOLA’S GYPSY JAZZ GUITAR CAMP Learn from guitarist extraordinaire, Frank Vignola, and other accomplished musicians. Camp includes warm ups, jam time, rhythm guitar, improvisation, a workshop on Django Reinhardt’s style, ensembles, and late-night jam sessions with performers.

CYRILLE AIMÉE BAND Jazz Times says, “It is impossible not to be charmed by French moppet Cyrille Aimée and her infectious joie de vivre.” Primarily raised in France by a French father and Dominican mother, Cyrille Aimée was a curious child. Growing up in Samois-sur-Seine, she would sneak out of her bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled with those attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. She quickly fell in love with the gypsy music and way of life; years later she would sing on street corners with friends while traveling across Europe. While in the midst of one such odyssey, she found herself at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she won first prize in the vocal competition - which included the financing of her first self-produced album. She now happily tours the world with her band as well as in a duo setting with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo.

GYPSY JAZZ IN PARADISE Now in its fifth year, Gypsy Jazz In Paradise in Mt. Crested Butte will celebrate the music of Django Reinhardt, one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century. This summer’s festival is now four days long, includes a stellar line-up of some of today’s most gifted gypsy jazz musicians and introduces the Frank Vignola Guitar Camp.

OPENING NIGHT Ben Powell, Olli Soikkeli, Brian Netzley, Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo - The Gypsy Jazz In Paradise All Star Band - will be on stage for the first time ever and exclusively for this evening! Music by Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and “Hot Club of France.”

Ben Powell stands among a select few as one of the leading multi-stylistic improvising violinists of his generation. He has worked with jazz icons such as vibraphonist Gary Burton, classical conductors Sir Roger Norrington, Marin Alsop and Keith Lockhart, and with composers such as Hans Zimmer and Alexandre Desplat. As a performer, recording artist, composer and ambassador for jazz and alternative string playing, Powell transcends musical boundaries. NPR has compared him to the late Stéphane Grappelli.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

FESTIVAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - OFF THE RECORD

Introduced as a novel concept in 2014, Off the Record will continue with another stunning performance of the Festival Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Benjamin Wallfisch. Masterworks - not often found on regular concert programs- will be presented in the intimate setting of the Center for the Arts; from Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll to the luscious Suite 1877 by Czech composer Leoš Janácek, to Hollywood film composer Erich Korngold’s Concerto for Violin. Featuring rockstar talent Charles Yang on violin, this evening will be off the record! Presented by: Stanley Feldberg New Initiatives Fund

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE Celebrating the power and beauty of Russian composers, the Festival Symphony Orchestra will perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s epic piece Scheherazade and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring Russian pianist Igor Kamenz. According to International Piano, Kamenz is “a giant of the keyboard,” and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says he conquers concert halls with “the finest nuances and almost incompressible virtuosity.” Prior to the concert, Russian-inspired cocktails and dinner will get you in the spirit of From Russia with Love, led by Music Director Benjamin Wallfisch.

HOME SOIRÉES

GUNNISON SOIRÉE - CHAMBER, CHAMPAGNE & CHOCOLATE

Maia Jasper, Terry Bonney and Alexander Scheirle will perform in this emotional piano trio performance, anchored around the epic Piano Trio No. 1 by Peter I. Tchaikovsky. Patrons described the trio’s performance during the 2014 season as “overwhelmingly beautiful.”

CHARLES YANG Described by the Boston Globe as one who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star,” Juilliard graduate Charles Yang has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals in the United States, Europe, Brazil, Russia, China, and Taiwan, and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.

IGOR KAMENZ Award-winning Russian pianist and conductor, Igor Kamenz, has performed around the world. This year, Kamenz will perform at Rheingau Music Festival, with the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and will open the concert season for Portland Piano International.

A SPECIAL EVENING WITH TENOR BARRY BANKS

The Daily Telegraph has written about Mr. Banks: “He ranks in the top class of Italian-style lyric tenors, every phrase beautifully projected, clarion-toned and technically secure.” Among our most popular events from last season, the engaging Mr. Banks’ return to Crested Butte will be a summer highlight.

AMERICAN STRING QUARTET Internationally recognized as one of the world’s foremost quartets,

the American String Quartet (ASQ) celebrates its 39th season in 2014–2015. This evening’s program will feature Schubert’s String Quintet, one of the most important chamber music pieces in history. Cellist Alexander Scheirle will join the quartet as the fifth musician in the performance of this masterpiece.

JESSICA FICHOT With a French/Chinese/American upbringing and a pioneering spirit all her own, chanteuse/singer-songwriter, Fichot has brought the exotic charms of her imagination to audiences across the world, backed by a fiery band (clarinet/sax, upright bass, drums and guitar), and armed with her accordion, toy piano, and multilingual vocals. Jessica will perform songs from her new album Dear Shanghai as well as popular French chansons.
