Crestview Local School District Message from the Superintendent As this new school year begins, the Crestview Local Schools continues the quest to be a leader in Ohio’s Race to the Top mission. The vision of Ohio’s Race to the Top program is to implement a world-class education system in which all students will graduate with a sense of purpose and be well prepared for college, work and life. In order to achieve our Race to the Top mission, Crestview has formed a “Transformation Team” that has developed strategies to achieve our goals. The team consists of the Superintendent, each of the building principals, and teachers: Herman Miller, Gail Barnhart, Elwood Woolman and Rick Gates. We are pleased to announce that this year, Crestview Local has received four grants to help us implement our Race to the Top program. The first of these grants is the “Ohio High School to Higher Education Alignment Grant”. This grant is designed to improve the alignment between secondary and postsecondary education with a goal of reducing the need for remedial work by students entering college. The grant allows us to develop partnerships with Kent State University, Youngstown State University and Eastern Gateway College to align high school curriculum requirements with college readiness expectations. The second grant is a “Virtual Advanced Placement Grant”. This grant provides Crestview students the opportunity to take AP courses through our on-line virtual program and upon completion of the course, students may take the Advanced Placement exam. If students are successful in passing the exam at the end of the course, they can be awarded up to three (3) semester hours of college credit. This year Crestview has eight (8) students enrolled in a virtual AP Biology course through the grant. These students are able to take the course tuition free and also the grant will pay for the cost of the AP test. The third grant is the “Formative Assessment Middle School Grant”. Using Race to the Top funds, the Formative Assessment Middle School pilot project will provide teachers with a deep understanding of how to effectively use and develop strong formative assessment strategies aligned to the newly adopted Common Core State Standards in English and mathematics. During this pilot project, the Crestview Middle School teachers will develop a meaningful portfolio of formative assessment strategies and practices which can be replicated in districts across the state. The final grant is a “S.T.E.M. Expansion Grant”. This grant allows Crestview to expand and enrich our S.T.E.M. program by providing additional training and support for our teacher (Randi Yazvak) to add learning modules to the Introduction to Engineering and Manufacturing curriculum. The S.T.E.M. ( S cience, T echnology, E ngineering, M ath) program is designed to increase all students' achievement in technology, science, mathematics, and English through authentic learning. The Crestview Transformation Team will continue to explore grant opportunities to enrich the educational opportunities of all of our students. John Dilling, Superintendent September, 2012

Message from the Superintendent

As this new school year begins, the Crestview Local Schools continues the

quest to be a leader in Ohio’s Race to the Top mission. The vision of Ohio’s Race to

the Top program is to implement a world-class education system in which all students

will graduate with a sense of purpose and be well prepared for college, work and life.

In order to achieve our Race to the Top mission, Crestview has formed a

“Transformation Team” that has developed strategies to achieve our goals. The team

consists of the Superintendent, each of the building principals, and teachers: Herman

Miller, Gail Barnhart, Elwood Woolman and Rick Gates. We are pleased to announce that this year, Crestview Local

has received four grants to help us implement our Race to the Top program.

The first of these grants is the “Ohio High School to Higher Education Alignment Grant”. This grant is

designed to improve the alignment between secondary and postsecondary education with a goal of reducing the need

for remedial work by students entering college. The grant allows us to develop partnerships with Kent State

University, Youngstown State University and Eastern Gateway College to align high school curriculum requirements

with college readiness expectations.

The second grant is a “Virtual Advanced Placement Grant”. This grant provides Crestview students the

opportunity to take AP courses through our on-line virtual program and upon completion of the course, students may

take the Advanced Placement exam. If students are successful in passing the exam at the end of the course, they can

be awarded up to three (3) semester hours of college credit. This year Crestview has eight (8) students enrolled in a

virtual AP Biology course through the grant. These students are able to take the course tuition free and also the grant

will pay for the cost of the AP test.

The third grant is the “Formative Assessment Middle School Grant”. Using Race to the Top funds, the

Formative Assessment Middle School pilot project will provide teachers with a deep understanding of how to

effectively use and develop strong formative assessment strategies aligned to the newly adopted Common Core State

Standards in English and mathematics. During this pilot project, the Crestview Middle School teachers will develop a

meaningful portfolio of formative assessment strategies and practices which can be replicated in districts across the

state.

The final grant is a “S.T.E.M. Expansion Grant”. This grant allows Crestview to expand and enrich our

S.T.E.M. program by providing additional training and support for our teacher (Randi Yazvak) to add learning

modules to the Introduction to Engineering and Manufacturing curriculum. The S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology,

Engineering, Math) program is designed to increase all students' achievement in technology, science, mathematics,

and English through authentic learning.

The Crestview Transformation Team will continue to explore grant opportunities to enrich the educational

opportunities of all of our students.

Educate-Empower-Impact

The CHS staff wishes to welcome all students back to

classes as we begin an exciting year of changes at

Crestview High School. I am certain that many good

things lie ahead for all of us as students are preparing to

successfully integrate technology into their education.

Parents, please encourage your student to check Moodle,

keep track of assignment due dates, and to be organized.

Parents may sign up with Parent Assist to check the

progress of your student with classroom assignments,

tests and projects.

It is exciting to see the large number of students who are

participating in extracurricular activities. In order to

participate in sports, a student must be passing five (5)

credits in the preceding grading period. Please check

your child’s schedule to make sure they meet the credit

requirements. If you have any questions regarding your

child’s education or extracurricular activities please call

(330) 482-4744.

ACT Test Dates

It is important that students who are planning to continue

their education, take a national college entrance exam.

The ACT test is one such exam and can be taken an

unlimited number of times with schools accepting the

highest score. Students may register online at

Welcome Back to School!

Our school year is off to a great start!

The students have begun to settle into

their daily routines. Our teachers are

working hard to learn about each of their

students’ abilities, learning styles and

special needs. They would like parents

to work in partnership with them to

ensure that each child receives the best possible

education. Parents should feel free to contact their

child’s teacher with any questions or concerns. Teachers

can be reached via phone (330-482-5370), email, or a

written note in the student’s folder or agenda book.

Additionally, teachers ask that parents go over the papers

that come home daily. In these ways we can keep the

lines of communication open and help our students to

become successful.

We Want Our Students Reading

at Home Every Day

This year, we are asking all

students to read at home for at

least 20 minutes each day. As

we prepare our students for

the 21st century, reading is

even more important than

ever before. Reading is the

core of future learning, even in Science, Math and

Technology. Research shows that students who read or

are read to each day become more successful students.

Parents can help by encouraging their child to read.

Take your son/daughter to the library regularly. Help

them find books and magazines on topics that interest

them. Talk to your child about what they are reading to

help them to begin to comprehend. Remember, the more

they read, the easier it is for them to learn.

Volunteers Are Needed & Welcome

Volunteers are always needed at our school. They help

our students in many capacities. We are in need of

volunteers to help with our HOSTS program, in the

library, in the cafeteria, at recess and in some

classrooms. If you are able to help, please call the

school and speak to Nancy Tompkins at 330-482-1912

or Lisa Hughes at 330-482-5370.

Labels and Boxtops are Needed

Looking for an easy and free way to

help at school? Again this year, our

school is collecting Box Tops for

Education, Campbell’s soup labels,

and Nestle’s water bottle labels.

Please remember to cut out these

labels and send them to school. In

past years, our school has purchased

much needed technological and playground equipment

with the proceeds from these programs.

HOSTS News

Last year, we had 55 HOSTS mentors who volunteered

for 941 hours. They worked with 32 of our

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students on

developmental tasks and early reading skills. The

kindergarten students had an average gain of 52% in

their skills, while the 1st and 2nd grade students had an

average reading gain of 1 year.

The HOSTS program will begin on Thursday, September

20. New mentors will be trained in the next few weeks.

Experienced mentors will be invited to a refresher

course. We are looking forward to another exciting year

of learning and fun in the HOSTS room. Anyone with

questions about the HOSTS program can call Nancy

Tompkins at 330-482-1912.

Early Dismissals/Late Arrivals

All parents should try to limit early dismissals and late

arrivals to school for their child. School is in session

each day from 8:45-3:10 and we want all of our students

at school for the entire school day. We want our

students to receive their full instructional time each day.

However, if an early dismissal can’t be avoided, please

send a note with your child in the morning.

Bully Prevention

As always, we ask our students to be kind

to one another. We tell students that the

biggest rule at Crestview Elementary is to

“Be nice.” We tell them that if everyone

follows this rule, we will not have bullies

at school. Parents are asked to help

reinforce this idea at home. Talk to your

children about being kind, and tell them

to tell an adult at school if someone is being a bully.

Student Helpdesk

Students now have the ability to

contact the tech department

directly regarding issues with

their computers. Students can

fill out a short form describing

the computer issue they are having, or they can refer

to our knowledge base to see if others have had a

similar issue and what resolved it. Students are

utilizing technology more than ever before, and the

helpdesk provides a way to not only find a solution

to problems, but also gather information about how

to get the most out of their device. The helpdesk is

located at the link below:
