Message from the Superintendent

With this edition of the Informagram, I would like to wish everyone in the Crestview Community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! The Holiday season provides the perfect opportunity for me to offer my thanks to all of the wonderful individuals and organizations that offer support to our schools. To our parents, I want to thank you for sharing your children with us. In this era of school choice, we take your trust and confidence in the Crestview Schools to provide the best possible education to your child very seriously. It is our goal to work collaboratively with you to provide a sound educational foundation that will help to prepare your child for their future. I would like to offer a special thanks to the many volunteers who serve our schools as mentors, classroom aides, volunteer coaches and as members of our booster organizations and PTO. It is your commitment and dedication to our students that provides them with positive role models and contributes to their achievement in all phases of their education. And finally, all successful schools are dependent upon strong community support. The Crestview Community is well-known for their compassion for each other and their support of their schools. It is this reputation that led to the line in our mission statement that “the Crestview Schools are the heart of our community!”. It is through your efforts that our schools continue to grow and thrive. On behalf of the Crestview Board of Education, the staff and administration of the

Crestview Schools, thank you for all that you do for our students. Have a very Happy

ONLINE ASSESSMENTS REMINDER Your child will be taking the Online Performance Based Assessments (PBA) during the February 18 to March 13 testing window. The testing sessions will be posted on the Crestview Middle School website. Please do not schedule any appointments during the school day so that your child is at school to complete these tests. Also please be sure that your child gets enough rest each night and has eaten a healthy breakfast each morning. Encourage your child to do his/her best on these tests. Results of the assessments will be used to compare your child’s achievement levels to state standards. The results will also be used for next year’s placement in classes. The End of Year Assessments (EOY) will begin in April.

We are Thankful for our Volunteers! The staff and students at the elementary would like to thank all of our volunteers for their time, support and dedication in helping with the

numerous activities that take place at our school. Recently, our volunteers and PTO members have taken an active role in helping with holiday parties and Santa’s Secret Workshop. Additionally, they continue to help in the library, individual classrooms, the HOSTS room, and at lunch and recess regularly. Our school is made even better by their generous assistance.

Changes? Let the School Know!

If you have moved, changed your phone number, had a name change, or a custody change, it is important that you let the school know right away. We often need to reach parents, and are not able to do so if there has been a change that we are not aware of.

Bully Prevention News By now, all of our students should have received their Bully Prevention T-shirt. Special thanks to Mr. Mays, who printed all of the T-shirts. This year’s saying on the shirts is “Friends Build Up, Bullies Tear Down.” Students are asked to wear

their Bully Prevention shirts on Tuesdays to show that we are united against bullies at our school.

Hat, Sock & Mitten Drive During the month of December, students are asked to help the needy in our area by bringing in hats,

socks and mittens to place on our giving tree near the Cafeteria. The donated items will be given to the 4C’s in New Waterford, for distribution to the needy in our community.

New Buddy Bench for Our Playground

Special thanks to the Polen Family for their gift of a new rainbow colored Buddy Bench for the elementary playground. The bench was purchased in remembrance of Anne Polen, former Crestview graduate. Students who feel lonely or are looking for a friend can sit on the bench to feel safe and to find a friend.

Students are Getting Ready for Online Tests Our third and fourth grade students are getting ready for the new statewide online tests beginning in February. Third grade students will take English Language Arts and Math performance based tests and end of year tests. Fourth grade students will take English Language Arts, Math and Social Studies tests. Students will take the tests in the computer lab. The tests will measure the students’ knowledge of the Ohio’s new learning standards and will be more problem based than previous paper/pencil achievement tests. Our teachers have been working to get our students ready for these new tests. Sample tests are available on the Crestview Elementary website for students to practice at home.

Holiday Ideas Still looking for a few good gifts to give your child? Give the gift of reading—It’s the greatest gift you can ever give your child. They will have it for the rest of their lives, and it will take them far. Buy your child a favorite book from your childhood, a book about a movie, TV show or cartoon that they like, or a non-fiction book about their favorite animal or a hobby. Art and craft supplies—crayons, markers, paints, clay and paper are also inexpensive favorites of many children, and they help to develop fine motor skills at the same time. Finally, lots of educational electronic games, software and apps for your computer, cell phone or iPad are available to help early readers.

Happy Holidays

The staff at Crestview Elementary would like to wish all of the families in

our school community a happy holiday season. We hope that you enjoy a restful time filled with good family and friends, and a healthy and prosperous new year!

Parents—Your Opinion Matters! The Crestview Local School District is striving to improve the quality of education in our schools. In order to accomplish this task, we are participating in the district accreditation process provided through AdvancEd. This process examines five (5) standards of quality found in every excellent school. These standards include: Stable governance, management, and leadership A coherent course of study A reliable system by which to assess student progress Instructors who have a clear understanding of what

they aim to teach Access to the resources that are needed to teach We are asking for your help by completing a survey that will determine how well we are meeting those standards and how we can improve. The survey link can be found on the district webpage at www.crestviewlocal.k12.oh.us . The link can be accessed by clicking on the AdvancEd Parent Survey link on the left side of the page. The results of the survey are anonymous and will help us to develop a continuous improvement plan for our schools. Thank you!

Special Board Thank You - Nancy Tompkins The Crestview Board of Education recently thanked

Nancy Tompkins for her thirty-seven (37) years of service

to the Crestview School District. Nancy was employed as

an elementary teacher and for the last twelve (12) years

served as the H.O.S.T. coordinator at Crestview

Elementary. Nancy retired in June of 2014.

Bus Loop Recently parents have been attempting to drop student off

in the bus loop during the morning hours when the buses

are unloading. It is during this time that students are also

boarding buses for the departure for the Career Center.

The bus loop also serves as a pick-up area for elementary

students that are being transported to the elementary

school. For this reason, vehicles entering the bus loop is

strictly prohibited until 8:45 a.m.

Top Tips for Safe Online Holiday Shopping As you prepare for your holiday shopping, remember to STOP. THINK. CONNECT: Make sure security measures are in place, understand the consequences of your actions and behaviors and enjoy the benefits of the Internet. · Keep a Clean Machine: All the devices you use for shopping - including smartphones and tablets, should have up-to-date software including security software, operating systems, programs and apps. · When in Doubt, Throw it Out: Links in email, tweets, posts, and online advertising are often the way cybercriminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious, even if you know the source, it’s best to delete or if appropriate, mark as junk email. · Think Before you Act: Be wary of communications that offer amazing deals that sound too good to be true, implore you to act immediately - including those about a problem with an order or payment or ask you to view the website via a provided link. · Get Savvy about Wi-Fi Hotspots: Don’t share personal or financial information over an unsecured network (a connection that doesn’t require a password for access). Using the direct web access on your phone (via a 3G/4G connection) is safer than an unsecured wireless network when on your mobile device. · Make Sure the Site is Legitimate: This includes a closed padlock on your web browser’s address bar or a URL address that begins with http or https. This indicates that the purchase is encrypted or secured. For new sites, check online reviews. · Protect your Personal Information: Be alert to the kinds of information being collected to complete the transaction. Make sure the information requested is only that needed to complete the transaction. Only fill out required fields on checkout forms. Check the website's privacy policy. Make sure you understand how your information will be stored and used. · Use Safe Payment Options: Credit cards are generally the safest option because they allow buyers to seek a credit from the issuer if the product isn’t delivered or isn’t what was ordered. Credit cards may have a limit on the monetary amount you will be responsible for paying. Never send cash through the mail or use a money‐wiring service. · Keep a Paper Trail: Save records of your online transactions, including the product description, price, online receipt, terms of the sale, and copies of email exchanges with the seller. Read your credit card statements as soon as you get them to make sure there aren’t any unauthorized charges. If there is a discrepancy, call your bank and report it immediately.
