VantageHealth has two integrated components: a robust, flexible and enterprise scale costing engine,

FlexABMTM and TableauTM an exciting world-class multidimensional analysis and visualisation application.

VantageHealth also contains the FlexWebTM module to collect data over the web, which is not currently on

any system. An added benefit is that Tableau is a stand-alone rapid Business Intelligence (BI) development

tool that seamlessly integrates with most databases to provide added information without any technical (IT)

expertise required to generate ad-hoc reports. This enables management to access other data and

applications for better reporting and analysis.

    VantageHealth provides:

Full tracking of resources to the activities that are being performed by various business units

    and cost centres

Attribution of overhead costs to activities thereby providing the true cost of service delivery

End-to-end cost flow transparency from resources through activities/services to products and

    clients

A typical process flow is shown in Figure 1

How does VantageHealth link Resources to Activities?

Once the financial data has been mapped to the activities, VantageHealth, through FlexABM imports the

financial data from the financial system. Employee effort is imported from the time management system or

captured through the FlexWeb module. The reports generated through Tableau will answer typical

    questions such as:

What is the direct cost per process and activity?

What resources are being consumed by each activity?

What are the resources used and what are their associated costs within each business unit,

    cost centre or work team?

What are the top 10 most costly activities?

What are the most expensive resources and where are they being consumed?

What are the Resource Drivers and their quantities?

Figure 2: Dashboard Visualising some Answers to These Questions

An unlimited number of multi-dimensional reports and dashboards can be created and presented as single reports or in

an executive briefing book. The dashboard depicted above shows at the top left the overall costs of the organisation by

Business/Support Unit. To its right the cost per activity for each cost centre is shown with full drill-down capability to

cost centre and activity level. The bottom right report shows the cumulative and total cost by activity. Annotations can

be included in the report or dashboard to enhance the communication and feedback process. The bottom left report

shows the Top 10 activities and as can be seen a mouse-over will provide additional information on each component

included in the report. No technical support is required to generate these reports or dashboards.

The True Cost of Providing Health Insurance Services

The direct cost model only shows how the various resource costs are linked to activities, which is an important

first step as it shows management exactly where they are spending their budget. However, what is more

important is that managers are made aware of the true cost of providing services to clients. It is here wherethe true power of VantageHealth, made possible by FlexABMs powerful calculation engine, is applied.

VantageHealth enables management to determine the true cost of services through accurate attribution of

overhead costs to the various services through the activities that are performed by the support and

    operational entities within the organisation.

This functionality answers the following questions:

What is the total cost of providing services?

What is the unit cost of every activity output?

What proportion of the total cost of a particular service can be attributed to support services?

Where does this cost come from?

Figure 3 answers some of these questions.

    Figure 3: Cost Visibility

The dashboard above shows the cost distribution associated with the various business units and activities within the

organisation. In the top left hand report, the question is asked where the external costs come from that are attributed to

the Maintain Systems activity. The report below it shows the answer. The two right-hand reports show the cost

distribution and it can be seen that the Application Development activity has the most costs associated with it... The

bottom report shows the total cost per business/support unit and the colours within the bars represent the departments

within the business/support unit. Legends are shown at the left of the dashboard and filters on the right hand side. All

reports are interlinked and an update in one will automatically update the others. The filters will also update all the

    reports if so selected.

    Unit Costs

Rising health costs are forcing both the public and private sector suppliers of health-related services to be more

effective an efficient with regards to the management and operation of these services. VantageHealth

provides health insurance organisations with the true unit costs of providing services due to the accurateway in which it attributes overhead costs to activities. Knowing the unit cost of services delivered will assist

    healthcare managers to:

Align cost management initiatives accordingly and to institute best practices to reduce these

    costs

Determine a pricing structure that is based on a true unit costs calculation

Attribute costs accurately to the various products and services rendered by the organisation

Figure 4 shows a dashboard consisting of two unit cost reports.

    Figure 4: Unit Cost Dashboard

This dashboard shows the unit cost per activity for services rendered. The top report shows it in table format and the

lower one visualises the results making it easier for managers to see the cost comparison by activity as well as the

magnitude of the indirect costs per activity. The two reports are both linked to the filters embedded at the sides of the

dashboard. Once selected, only relevant descriptions will be shown making the filters part of the dashboard definition.

How Profitable are Services & Clients?

VantageHealth provides management with information on the profitability of all products, services and clients.

With revenue and cost information extracted from the financial system and linked to the operational systems

and data, VantageHealths costing engine calculates the profitability of all the services and products that theorganisation is providing, such as the profitability for customer segments, product groupings, individual

    products and individual clients.

Figure 5 shows a profitability dashboard that contains examples of profitability reports.

Figure 5: Service and Client Profitability Dashboard

The profitability dashboard shows the cumulative profitability by client in the top report. The bottom left report shows

profits versus sales for customers by region and product category. The bottom right report shows a bullet graph of profit

versus sales by customer and product sub-category. Profits are represented by the blue bar and sales by the vertical line

at the end of each bar.

The power of visual analysis is clearly demonstrated in this dashboard. Bullet graphs are also a new way of displaying

information, they provide a lot of information in a very small space which makes them an excellent alternative for dials,

which take up a lot of space and say very little.

VantageHealth, through Tableau, provides seekers of geographic intelligence with mapping visualisation

solutions that are easy to use and complete. No speciality map files, plug-ins, fees or third party tools are

required. Data is not only shown geographically but any of the dimensions and measures that are containedin the model can be projected on an embedded map. The user also has the ability to import custom maps

and geographic information. Full functionality in terms of data manipulation is possible.

Figure 6 shows an integrated visual dashboard containing geographical information focussing on profitability

    information.

Figure 6: Linking Data to the World

This integrated dashboard is an excellent example of what VantageHealth can provide in terms of geographic

intelligence, combined with other operational data that normally resides on other systems within the organisation. The

top report shows the profitability by region and product over a span of four years. Changes in profitability and product

type over the years are clearly visible and it is possible to drill into a specific region or product. The bottom left report

shows sales and profitability by customer segment for each state. The right hand bottom report is a heat map showing

the profitability by region. The scale ranges from unprofitable (red) to most profitable (dark green). All reports in the

dashboard are interlinked and by filtering on one, the others will automatically be updated to reflect their information in

    the same context.
