hacking conspiratorAfter the sentence,Brown released thefollowing statement:

“Good news!

“The U.S. government decided today thatbecause I did such a good job investigatingthe cyber-industrial complex, they’re nowgoing to send me to investigate the prison-industrial complex. For the next 35 months,I’ll be provided with free food, clothes, andhousing as I seek to expose wrongdoing byBureau of Prisons officials and staff andotherwise report on news and culture in theworld’s greatest prison system. I want tothank the Department of Justice for havingput so much time and energy into advocatingon my behalf; rather than holding a grudgeagainst me for the two years of work I putinto in bringing attention to a DOJ-linkedcampaign to harass and discredit journalistslike Glenn Greenwald, the agency insteadlabored tirelessly to ensure that I receivedthis very prestigious assignment.

“Wish me luck!”

sentencing hearing this morning, telling thejudge that he regrets his actions.

“I don’t think anyone doubts that I regret quite abit about my life,” including his drug use andmaking threats against an FBI agent, he said.

But despite his mistakes, he believes thegovernment overstepped the law to investigatehim. The defense asked for time served, arguingthat the federal investigation is a threat to FirstAmendment protections of journalists.

Both sides delivered their arguments thismorning before U.S. District Judge Sam Lindsay.

KathyDaSilva2How else is corruption exposed, if there is no watch dog elementspeaking from the public's right to know view point.

KathyDaSilva2I think Barrett, should have been allowed time served, he didn'treally commit a crime, but posted a link and it was somethingalready made public.

MichaelSLike a said in a previous post about this guy - Megalomaniac. Atleast he has a sense of humor.

Excessive. It should have been timed served. But glad to see he stillhas his sense of humor. Interesting that some of the same folks whodecry a perceived Big Brother when it comes to the SecondAmendment are perfectly comfortable with the Real Thing.

Walt ThiessenI support the second amendment, but I'm not a right-winger. Idon't feel like I know all the facts in this case, but from whatI've read in this and other articles, this conviction andsentencing sound more like scapegoating than justice to me.

HarrysPoints"I would even argue that the government itself believes that the factswarrant my release today, because look at all the lies they decidedthey would have to tell to keep me in prison." http://tum-blr.freebarrettbrown.org/post/108828161101/barrett-browns-al-locution-sentencing-statement

HarrysPointsMore quotes from sentencing statement: "Deny being aspokesperson for Anonymous hundreds of times, and you’re still aspokesperson for Anonymous. Deny being a journalist once ortwice, and you’re not a journalist. What conclusion can one drawfrom this sort of reasoning other than that you are whatever the FBIfinds it convenient for you to be at any given moment. This is not the“rule of law”, Your Honor, it is the “rule of law enforcement”, and it isvery dangerous." http://tumblr.freebarrettbrown.org/post/1088281-61101/barrett-browns-allocution-sentencing-statement

Texas_VinylFirst, unrelated to this particular story, but rather about the commentsection here and elsewhere... isn't it scary how quick right-wingersare to both assume an accused is guilty and demand either death orthe maximum sentence? I wonder if their love of strict adherence tothe law, law enforcement, and "throw the book" sentencing persistswhenever they should find themselves rightly or wrongly on thepointy-side of the criminal justice system... Second-- somebody please (Seriously) correct me if I'm wrong here. But, legally speaking, has Barrett been convicted of anything beyondposting a link to private data which was posted by someone else? IF that's true-- that he was convicted simply for posting a link tomaterial located elsewhere on the internet-- think of how scary thatis. How broad is the law that can see someone get 8 years in prisonfor simply posting a link? And under that law, how isn't a link-servingentity (think any search engine or messaging service) guilty a milliontimes over?

James KendallIm not a right winger, and I'm fine with his sentence. Hethought he was above the law and acted in defiance of the
