Halloween Celebration Monday, October 31st
Halloween is just around the corner and we know that children enjoy the opportunity to dress up and participate in special activities. We will be celebrating Halloween with classroom activities that are Halloween related and suitable for a classroom environment, followed by a school wide parade that will begin at 10:45. We are promoting fun and appro-priate activities while limiting the number of volunteers that we can allow in the classroom in order to uphold safety. Safety is our continued priority whenever we have visitors in our building. To maintain an or-ganized and safe school we will be setting chairs up in the gym for visi-tors that would like to watch the parade. We will not be allowing par-ents and visitors to be in the hallways and classrooms during the pa-rade. We will be asking all parents and visitors to conclude their visit after the parade so we can prepare for dismissal.
Halloween Celebration Schedule 9:30 – 10:45 Classroom Activities 10:45 – 11:15 School-wide Parade
11:15 – 12:00 Classroom Instruction 12:04 Dismissal
We are again requesting parents and children choose to dress in cos-tumes keeping positive role models in mind. A suggestion might be , book characters, cartoon characters, and animals. All of us at Crissman are working diligently to teach our students how to solve problems in a non-violent way. We do not want to see our students as perpetrators or victims of violence. These costumes and masks are unacceptable at Crissman. Since changing rooms are not available, and time is limited, hair sprays and undergarments such as long stockings, etc. should be applied at home.

October 2016
Habit 1 — Be Proactive
You're in Charge
I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not
blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
Habit 5 — Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Listen Before You Talk
I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking.
Habit 2 — Begin with the End in Mind
Have a Plan
I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and
make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
Habit 6 — Synergize
Together Is Better
I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people
who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I am humble.
Habit 3 — Put First Things First
Work First, Then Play
I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should
not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.
Habit 7 — Sharpen The Saw
Balance Feels Best
I take care of my body by eating right, exercising and getting
sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I find meaningful ways to help others. Habit 4 — Think Win-Win
Everyone Can Win
I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make depos-
its in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When con-flicts arise, I look for third alternatives.

If someone other than the student’s parent will be picking up a child, please send in a note to the of-fice or call the office in advance. We will not release a student unless we are informed by the student’s parent. Procedures are in place to keep our stu-dents safe. Our staff will always take time to check the emergency card and ask for proper identification, prior to releasing a student. We would rather be overcautious when it comes to this important matter. When Should Your Child Stay Home From School
Protecting your child’s health and prevent-ing the spread of illness to other students is one of our parental responsibilities. Please keep your child at home if you notice any of the following illnesses:
Contagious Diseases
Inform the school immediately if your child develops any of the following diseas-es: Chicken Pox, Hepatitis, Mumps, Strep Throat, Scarlet Fever, Impetigo, Scabies, Lice, Flu, Pink Eye, Rheumatic Fever, Ringworm, Hard or German Measles
Elevated Temperature (Fever)
Your child must be fever-free without medication for a full 24 hours before re-turning to school.
Vomiting and/or Diarrhea
Your child must be symptom free for a full 24 hours before returning to school.
Suspicious Skin Rashes or Suspicious Infections
We appreciate your support in this matter . If you should have any questions regarding your child and an illness, please do not hesitate to call the school.
Administration of Medication
UCS policy requires an Authorization for Medication form be filled out for ALL medi-cation that is administered to students dur-ing the school day. Students sometimes need to take medication at school. If this is the case, the school may administer either prescription or non-prescription medicine — but only when au-thorized by the student’s parent/guardian and the child’s physician. A medical doctor’s signature is required on all forms. For con-venience, these forms can be faxed to the Crissman office at (586)797-4301. We thank you in advance for your support.
Lost and Found
If your child loses something during the school year, please have them check the Lost and Found Area. All unclaimed items at the end of the school year will be donated to charity.
Visitors In accordance with UCS district policy, everyone entering Crissman Elementary must report to the office. Our office staff will be glad to help you. If you are volunteering or just visiting, you will need to sign in. All visitors will be given a Visitor badge to wear while inside Crissman Elementary. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Missing Items May be Found
If your child’s jacket has disappeared or a pair of shoes are missing, you may be able to find them in our Lost and Found. If your child has lost ANYTHING, please have them look through the Lost and Found on the tables in the lobby. We will be bagging up the items at the end of the school
year and donating them to a local charity.
Playground Rules Reminder
Recess is a great opportunity for students to get some fresh air and exercise. Each day, students have two recess opportunities, one at lunch time and another in the afternoon. Each recess period is supervised by two adults for each play-ground. A doctor’s note is required to excuse a student from recess for more than two days. Utica Community Schools playground guidelines are: Remain on school property Play in assigned areas Use playground equipment properly Show respect to adults and other students Quietly line-up and return to classrooms at the end of recess. STUDENTS MUST NEVER: Play games involving fighting, roughhousing, kicking or tackling others -
this includes football. Bring hardballs - such as baseballs and golf balls - and/or bats to school Throw or kick snow, snowballs, sand, rocks or wood chips
Our Halloween parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. I am asking that parents arrive no earlier than 10:15 AM for the parade. The Crissman staff and I will then be able to devote our attention to celebrating Halloween and maintaining a secure environment. Please remember that parking is limited. It would be appreciated if parents could carpool in order to help eliminate some of the parking lot congestion. You can park on the east side of wolf or on Luanne Drive and use the crosswalk that connects to Wolf.
Thank you for your understanding, support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
