Types of Sentences
Correct the essay in red pen. Write your name on the top of the
paper. Next to your name, write the heading
of the slide that you’re checking for. Write comments on what they did
wrong. Comment in complete sentences on
what they did right.
Circle every simple subject of every clause in the essay.
Underline all of the simple predicates.
Place an “I” next to each independent clause.
Place a “D” next to each dependent clause.
(A sentence with only one Independent Clause)
Identify each Simple sentence by placing an “S” at the beginning of the sentence.
(any sentence with two or more Independent Clauses.)
Identify each Compound sentence by placing an “CD” at the beginning of the sentence.
(Any sentence with one Independent Clause and at least one Dependent Clause.)
Identify each Complex sentence by placing an “CX” at the beginning of the sentence.
(Any sentence what has two or more Independent Clauses and at least one Dependent Clause.)
Identify each Compound-Complex sentence by placing an “CC” at the beginning of the sentence.
Count how many of each sentence he or she has and create a chart.

If you did not vary your types of sentences, separate, combine, or rewrite sentences to get a good variety of sentences in your essay.
Remember, too many simple sentences will make your essay sound elementary, while too many compound-complex sentences will make your essay confusing.
