Its target markets will generally remain the same, with most new stores going into rural and suburban markets. This strategy will shift in two years to emphasize urban markets. Dollar General’s aggressive growth effort will require it grow nationally but Texas and other southern states could see additional locations to take advantage of a new distribution center in Texas. A new distribution center in Wisconsin could support growth in the Midwest. Starbucks Traditional Starbucks Reserve 500 to 1,750 s.f. 15,000 s.f. 700 Starbucks looks to add 700 locations in the Americas this year and will likely have more than 15,000 stores in the region this year. Another 1,800 locations will be added in international markets. Dollar Tree 6,000 to 13,000 s.f. 500 A South Carolina distribution center will strengthen Dollar Tree’s growth in the Southeast and MidAtlantic. The expansion of an existing Stockton, Calif., distribution center will mean additional stores in western states. Expect it to focus on California, with an eye on locations in and around Los Angeles and San Diego, the Central Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. Other markets to get attention will include North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota and Missouri. 7Eleven Streetfront, Inline Freestanding, End Cap 1,200 to 1,800 s.f. 2,000 to 3,000 s.f. 300350 This convenience store giant will lean on franchisees to support growth. While it will grow nationwide, 7Eleven will likely focus on its biggest markets, mainly California, Florida, Texas and Virginia. While the chain will grow organically, it could make additional acquisitions similar to its purchase of the 182unit Tedeschi Food Shops chain last year. Regis Corp. SuperCuts Best Cuts 700 to 1,200 s.f. 250 This growth will be spread among the company’s Regis, Best Cuts, ProCuts and Smart Style banners. Expect the chain to continue to close underperforming units while placing new locations nationwide, with an emphasis on Florida and the Midwest. Chipotle 1,000 to 2,800 s.f. 220235 Confidence in a sales rebound is behind Chipotle’s belief that it can again become be the fastest growing fastcasual chain in the industry. It opened 79 restaurants during the fourth quarter of 2015 to end up with 2,010 restaurants in operation. Expect Chipotle to consider sites nationwide. O’Reilly Auto Parts 6,800 to 7,300 s.f. 210 O’Reilly looks nationwide for new locations and could debut in additional states this year. Look for the chain to select multiple locations in California, Florida and Texas, though it recently focused on the Great Lakes region. Sport Clips 1,000 to 1,400 s.f. 200 Now that it has become a national chain, Sport Clips will search nationwide for locations with an emphasis on the Northeast, as well as the West Coast, the Midwest and Colorado. 300‐350 This convenience store giant will lean on franchisees to support growth. While it will grow nationwide, 7‐Eleven will likely focus on its biggest markets, mainly California, Florida, Texas and Virginia. While the chain will grow organically, it could make additional acquisitions similar to its purchase of the 182‐unit Tedeschi Food Shops chain last year.

Regis Corp. SuperCuts Best Cuts

700 to 1,200 s.f.  250 This growth will be spread among the company’s Regis, Best Cuts, ProCuts and Smart Style banners. Expect the chain to continue to close underperforming units while placing new locations nationwide, with an emphasis on Florida and the Midwest.

Sport Clips  1,000 to 1,400 s.f.  200 Now that it has become a national chain, Sport Clips will search nationwide for locations with an emphasis on the Northeast, as well as the West Coast, the Midwest and Colorado.

Hottest Chains Planning 100+ Locations (Ranked by Estimated 2016 Openings)…Continued from Previous Page

Company Name Preferred Square

Footage Planned

Openings Notes

Five Guys (cont’d)…    …100 locations, with more planned. Other specific states that will see new stores include Georgia, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. The chain will also look at various regions throughout the country.

GNC  1,250 s.f.  200 The majority of GNC’s growth will likely be derived from franchising, although company‐owned locations have recently shown better results.

Walmart Neighborhood Market

30,000 to 55,000 s.f.  180‐200 Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Advance Auto Parts  6,000 to 10,000 s.f.  165 Advance Auto Parts will add locations under its namesake banner, WorldPac branches and Carquest brands. While the company will continue to close struggling locations, Advance Auto Parts is keeping its expansion target above 150 new locations, with an eye on growth nationwide.

Popeyes  1,000 to 3,000 s.f.  130‐150 Popeyes’ seems to be relying on a modest boost to its growth this year to keep ahead of the competition. The company’s long‐term expectations are to at least double its number of U.S. units, even though it has more than 2,500 locations in 48 states. Look for the chain to grow nationwide.

Wingstop  2,400 to 4,000 s.f.  130‐150 Wingstop could rise to become the fastest growing chicken chain this year, or at least come close based on its performance last year, when 133 net new stores beat plans for 120 to 130 new units. Its long‐term goal is to have 2,500‐plus domestic units in operation. With a healthy number of domestic development agreements in place, it will look nationwide.

ALDI  17,000 s.f.  100‐150 ALDI will put a lot of its effort into California to build upon its debut in the state. Texas will also get attention while the company fortifies its existing presence in 32 states. Expect the chain to stretch nationwide over the long term while a California distribution center could support new stores in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit  1,800 to 2,200 s.f.  100‐150 Expect Dickey’s growth to focus on western states, though it has more than 530 locations in 43 states. It will also search the Midwest and Southeast for new locations while a franchise agreement will support growth in Florida. Major franchising agreements also cover the Indianapolis area and Ohio. Dickey’s focuses on smaller, subur‐ban markets.

Chick‐Fil‐A  4,600 s.f. (Average)  100 Chick‐Fil‐A ‘s national expansion will likely include debuts in new cities, echoing the four debuts last year. It’s growth last year included new stores in California, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

SUPERVALU   Save‐A‐Lot

40,000 to 60,000 s.f. 10,000 to 20,000 s.f.

90‐100 A shift in SUPERVALU’s growth strategy will yield more corporate locations than licensed stores. More than half the stores it plans to open this fiscal year will be corporate locations. (SUPERVALU gener‐ally operates mainly as a distributor, with 56% of its 3,420 locations operating as independent entities to which SUPERVALU distributes inventory.

Panera Bread  3,000 to 5,000 s.f.  90‐100 Although Panera appears to be slowing its expansion pace, its growth this year could at least flirt with the 100 mark. It remains one of the fastest growing chains within its segment as well as a strong tenant.

Zaxby’s  2,800 to 4,000 s.f.  80‐100 This southeastern chain will increasingly look beyond established markets as strong comps gains encourage an aggressive stance. In addition to markets in the Southeast, Zaxby’s recently added stores in Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Utah.

TOP SPORTING GOODS CHAINS GOOD TO GROW Crittenden Retail Tenants Online Directory™

(Ranked by estimated 2016 openings)

As The Sports Authority reportedly prepares to file for bankruptcy, below are the major sporting goods  chains that may benefit from the industry exit of the big‐box chain.

Company Name Preferred Square

Footage Planned

Openings Notes

Hibbett Sports   Traditional   Sports & Co.   Sports Additions

 5,000 s.f. 25,000 s.f. 2,000 s.f.

50 This small‐store retailer has long been successful by focusing on local markets that are too small to support any of its big‐box competitors. And although sales have not been booming of late – comps were up 0.6 percent for the third quarter ended Nov. 20, but comps for the first three quarters combined were down 0.5 percent – the retailer should continue adding the most stores in the niche. Hibbett bounced back well after suffering from the recession along with everyone else and management is confident the chain can to add at least 50 stores annually as it chases its long‐term goal of 1,500 stores, up from the current 1,020. Look for Hibbett to grow primarily in small to midsized markets throughout the South, Southwest, Mid‐Atlantic and Midwest.

Dick’s Sporting Goods   Traditional   Dual‐concept format   Field & Stream

 35,000 to 45,000 s.f. 80,000 to 100,000 s.f.

50,000 s.f.

35‐50 Dick’s Sporting Goods added 27 new Dick’s stores and seven Field & Stream locations. Field & Stream is its newest outdoor concept, competing mainly with the likes of Gander Mountain, Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops. Dick’s will add locations nation‐wide, with Alabama, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin getting multiple locations. The focus of the Field & Stream concept now appears to be the Southeast, Midwest and Mid‐Atlantic. Although Dick’s will put most of its effort into its namesake sporting goods concept, look for Field & Stream to become increasingly important to its growth. Dick’s has also begun opening dual‐format stores that put Dicks and Field & Stream under one roof. It opened one such location, measuring 100,000 s.f. and in Champaign, Ill., late last year. It announced another one last month – filling 89,000 s.f. and opening late this year in Medford, Ore. Dick’s has been en‐joying strong sales while its main competitor, The Sports Au‐thority, has struggled for several years and finally appears to be headed into bankruptcy. Although Dick’s comps for the third quarter produced a modest gain of only 0.4 percent, some of this weak showing can be attributed due to weakness at its Golf Galaxy brand.

Academy Sports & Outdoors

50,000 to 80,000 s.f. 15‐20 This Katy, Texas‐based retailer celebrated its 200th location last year with a July opening in Tupelo, Miss. With 21 openings last year and a similar pace expected this year, Academy looks poised to give Dick’s Sporting Goods a run for its money, partic‐ularly in the South. So far, Academy has eschewed national growth, preferring to stay close to its Southern roots. Its heavi‐est presence by far is in its home state of Texas, particularly in and around Dallas‐Ft. Worth, Houston and San Antonio. Look for the company to continue its aggressive growth in the Lone Star State, as it seems intent to be the main sporting goods chain in the state; last year it added five new stores in Texas. It will con‐tinue to open elsewhere in the South. Other than Texas, the chain added four stores in Florida, as well as two locations each in Mississippi and Oklahoma, and single openings in Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. So far this year, it has announced it will open in Florida (its 5th in the Orlando area), Georgia (its 9th in the Atlanta area), as well as one opening in Oklahoma and a relocation in Texas.

Dunham’s Sports  20,000 to 90,000 s.f. 15‐20 Including relocations, Dunham’s Sports slightly increased its growth pace last year to 16 new stores, compared to 15 in 2014. Look for the chain to continue at that growth pace throughout its familiar territory in the Midwest and South.

Hottest Chains Planning 100+ Locations (Ranked by Estimated 2016 Openings)…Continued from Previous Page

Openings Notes

…Its home state of Michigan, which currently has the most stores, will continue to get some attention. It will specifically consider relocation opportunities as it looks to upgrade its portfolio in the Great Lakes State. Dunham’s relocated four locations in Michigan last year. Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin also got multiple stores in 2015. The retailer typically takes 50,000 to 60,000 s.f. but its stores can go much bigger, as evidence by a 89,000 s.f. Racine, Wis., store that opened in November.

Gander Mountain  50,000 to 80,000 s.f.  10‐15 While a quick look at Gander Mountain’s store map shows a heavy presence east of the Mississippi, the retail continues its westward expansion. Gander Mountain has been focusing on growing its portfolio in Texas, where it will open another loca‐tion this spring, in Frisco. Colorado will get its third location in the Denver area, when the company opens a store in Parker this spring. That’s as far west as the company has gone so far but ex‐pect other western states to be considered in the near future. Gander Mountain has also announced a couple openings in Pennsylvania and one in Ohio for this year.

REI   Traditional   Flagship

 25,000 to 35,000 s.f.

50,000

10‐12 The outdoor sporting goods co‐op continues its opportunistic search in eastern states with planned openings in Florida, New York and Pennsylvania. The company also plans a debut in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as its first stores in Delaware and Iowa. REI will enter the Washington, D.C., area for the first time with a 51,000 s.f. flagship location in the historic Uline Arena. The com‐pany already has a stranglehold on the West Coast, particularly California, where it has 29 stores, by far the greatest number of stores in any single state. Despite its already heavy presence in the West, growth there will likely continue. Later this year, the company will open its third distribution center in Goodyear, Ariz. A new distribution center often augurs expansion in the sur‐rounding region, so look for more growth for REI in the South‐west and further east. Texas, for instance, which currently only has nine stores, could benefit from the new center. REI plans one opening in Texas this year.

Cabela’s  50,000 to 70,000 s.f.  8 The company has slowed its growth consistently during the last few years and will do so again next year, when it will open just six locations. However, it still wants to nearly double its store count over the long term to 200‐225 stores, from the just more than 100 stores it has now. Despite a fourth quarter, ended Jan. 2, during which U.S. comps dropped 3.5 percent, the company remains optimistic it can reach its long‐term goal. Some of that optimism comes from its new 50,000 to 70,000 s.f. stores, which have consistently improved. The days of massive 200,000‐plus locations seem over but it will keep adding smaller stores. Cabela’s has already identified sites for all eight openings this year but is on the lookout for three locations to fill next year’s expansion quota.

Bass Pro Shops   Traditional   Outpost

 100,000 to 200,000 s.f. 70,000 to 100,000 s.f.

6‐8 Bass Pro shops will continue to open massive stores, including a planned, 200,000 s.f. location in Sayerville, N.Y. It also has plans for a 130,000 to 150,000 s.f. store in North Charleston, S.C.; a 150,000 s.f. location in Westchester, Ohio; and a 145,000 s.f. store in Victor, N.Y. However, like its main competitor, Bass Pro will look to smaller locations to satisfy its appetite. An Outpost location planned in Daytona Beach, Fla., for instance, will meas‐ure just 70,000 s.f. Florida will continue to get the most atten‐tion from the retailer, with five locations planned for the near future. New York, Ohio and South Carolina will also get multiple openings as the retailer shores up market share in eastern states.

Big 5 Sporting Goods  7,000 to 20,000 s.f. 5‐8 Big 5 Sporting Goods will at least match or exceed last year’s five openings during 2016 as it remains optimistic about its newer stores. It will, however, post a net loss in store count as it plans 10 closures. Like most of the industry, high comps have been difficult to come by. During Big 5’s fourth quarter ended Jan. 3, comps were up only 0.1 percent. For the year, same‐store sales rose 1.3 percent. Look for Big 5 to continue its focus in the west‐ern half of the U.S. So far, the farthest east the chain has gone is Texas, where it only has 18 stores, compared to 230 in its home state of California. Big 5 will take 9,000 to 20,000 s.f. but its sweet spot is 10,000 to 12,000 s.f.

Openings Notes

Subway  300 to 2,000 s.f.  800‐900 The sandwich giant looks to continue its furious growth this year, ensuring plenty of room to grow with a willingness to open in a variety of property types, including inside gas stations and other retailers. Look for expansion nationwide.

Jimmy John’s  800 to 1,500 s.f.  300 When Jimmy John’s last October scrapped an IPO that had been rumored for several months, Wall Street might have sighed re‐gretfully at the loss of a popular chain with huge growth potential. Landlords needn’t worry. The company still plans to open at least 1,300 stores over the next five years. It will grow aggressively nationwide but particularly eyes California in the near future.

Jersey Mike’s  1,200 to 1,800 s.f. 300 Jersey Mike’s added its 1,000th location late last year, thereby doubling in size in just three years. It will not stop there as it plans to add another 1,000 locations by 2019, for a likely growth pace of about 300 new locations annually. California easily leads the country in terms of number of locations – 196 stores – and the company plans to open another 21 in the state soon. Florida comes in second with 106 locations and another 16 on the way. Look for many other states, particularly Arizona, Colorado, New Jersey and Texas to get multiple stores in the near future. Jersey Mike’s plans to grow nationwide.

Firehouse Subs  1,600 to 2,000 s.f. 250 Jacksonville, Fla.‐based Firehouse Subs maintains its aggressive plan of adding more than 1,000 locations by 2020. To that end it will look not only nationwide, but also in Canada, where it recently signed a development agreement to open 90 locations. The Midwest, particularly northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana, will get plenty of attention in the near future. Southern California is also an important growth region, as are the Mid‐Atlantic states.

100 Which Wich? has been vocal about its international expansion ambitions but don’t expect the chain to sacrifice domestic growth. The company will grow nationwide, particularly in the Midwest. Northern California will also get plenty of attention as the company recently signed development agreements for both the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento region.

Arby’s  1,600 to 2,300 s.f. 70‐80 Atlanta, Ga.‐based Arby’s has continually increased its growth pace every year since 2013 and there is no reason to believe it will not do the same this year. In fact, 70 to 80 openings for 2016 may be a bit on the conservative side as its sales continue on a steep upward trend. During 2015, the company reported a U.S. comps increase of 8.1 percent. The company last month signed an…

Potbelly  1,800 to 2,200 s.f.  55‐65 After a strong fiscal year ended Dec. 27, during which comps rose 3.7 percent at company‐operated locations, Potbelly raises its annual growth expectations. Last year it added 53 new loca‐tions, including 43 company‐operated shops. It has grown mainly in the Midwest, Northeast and South, with Illinois and Texas leading by store count. So far this year, it has announced dual openings in Michigan and Texas, as well as new stores in Colo‐rado, Kansas and Pennsylvania. California does not have any stores but with Washington and Oregon having 18 stores be‐tween them, Golden State growth seems merely a matter of time.
