Crochet is a worldwide handy craft. Crochet is very famousand useful technique as well as a popular craft all over theworld. Since pre-historic time, our ancestors used to makenumerous products while using this craft such as Garment,Gloves, Accessories, Home furnishing items etc. Proceeding further, crochet is a method of makinggarment from strand or thread. 'Crochet' word is obtainedfrom the middle French word 'ctoc' or 'croche' meaninghook. In this modernized era, the versatility of crochet has beenintroduced by international fashion designers andcrocheted attires are included in various collection. Additionally, in this technique basic stitches can beadopted for various purposes, such as chain stitch and thisbring a new version to a well-known craft.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS

•There are many tools andmaterials used in thistechnique that are discussedfollowing :-

YARNS• In recent times, there are large number

of yarns available in the market,consequently ,difficult to choose whichcolor to buy first. There are variouscolors like solidi colors, multi colorsand even stripes. These are obtainedfrom natural fibers wool, cotton andsilk whereas some are made fromsynthetic fibers such as acrylic yarns.A new yarns is introduced nowadays,named "NOVELTY YARNS" whichcontains metallic and shiny ribbonyarns. In various shops yarns areavailable by their weight or thicknesswhich can range from fine to mediumthen bulky. Novelty yarns work up intolight garment while metallic yarnscome in different weight and colors,perfect for evening wear.

HOOKS

A simple ball of yarn and a hook and abag to hold them in are all that isrequired to begin to crochet. one cancrochet while travelling or at a friend'shouse. The chain stitch or foundation chain is one of most basicand most important stitch used in crochet. The benefit ofthis technique is that only single loop is found on the hook.This is formed by using a hook to pull one loop of yarnthrough another. They work simultaneously that is thethread and work are held in one hand as well as the hook inthe other. Inspire of chain stitch, there are also five other stitcheswhich are mainly used in crochet items, like :-1) Slip Stitch2) Single Crochet3) Half-Double Crochet4) Double Crochet5) Treble CrochetThe stitches are discussed below:-

• 1) Slip Stitch :- Insert hook into a stitch, yarn over hook and draw up loopdirectly through the stitch into which you have inserted thehook and through the loop hook.

• 2) Single Crochet :-Insert hook into a stitch, yarn over hook, draw up a loopthrough the stitch , yarn over hook and draw through bothloop on hook.

• 3) Half-Double Crochet :-Yarn over hook before inserting hook into stitch, yarn overhook, draw up a loop, yarn over hook, draw through the threeloops on hook.

• 4) Double Crochet:-

Yarn over hook before inserting hook into stitch, yarn over hook,draw up a loop, yarn over hook, draw through two loops, yarn overhook, draw through the last two loops on hook.

• 5) Treble Crochet :-Yarn over hook twice before inserting hook into stitch, yarnover hook, draw up a loop, yarn over hook, draw through twoloops, yarn over hook, draw through two loops, yarn over hook,draw through the last two loops on hook.

BASIC SHAPES USED INCROCHET • While working during crochet, round shape is formed

through chain stitch. With the increase in stitches, circlewill enlarged without any turning. This technique is mainlyused to make tremendous motifs as a patchwork styleand traditional or modern lace should be formed. Besidesthis, other accessories such as shawls or table cloths,were also made. With the help of the same techniqueother shapes such as square, hexagon, triangle would becreate more article like hats, scarfs, caps etc.

FILET CROCHET

In this prevailing 21st century, filet crochetis mainly used and is one of the oldesttechnique from the late 19th century. It isfamous in many countries like France,Germany and Holland. They create manyitems with the help of this method that iscurtains, table cloths as erll as decorativedesigns. It contains net, made from trebleand the chain stitch and the design iscreated by filling in some of the spaces withblocks of stitches. The working of thistechnique is like, you have to first follow thepattern on graph paper with the help ofrows and columns, then the product iscreate. Filet crochet can be worked on alarge or small scale and in a variety ofthreads.
