INTRODUCTION

The Crockett Collection Papers are centered around the Crockett family of Davidson and Williamson Counties, Tennessee. Many of the papers are those of John Bell Crockett (1823-1889), a physician of Williamson County, his wife, children, brothers and sisters and their families. The Crockett Collection Papers were a gift of Mrs. T. C. Barr, Mrs. Sidney Scales Crockett and Mrs. Vaulx Crockett all of Nashville, Tennessee, and Miss Louisa Crockett of Franklin, Tennessee. The materials in this finding aid measure 5.04 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Crockett Collection Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The Crockett Collection Papers containing approximately 3,500 items and fourteen volumes spans the period 1827-1947. Most of the papers, however, were written in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection is composed of correspondence; account books; accounts (bills, notes and receipts); biographical data; debate material; diaries; two doctors’ day books, 1886-1893; documents, 1808-1912; estate papers; genealogical data; greetings; invitations; land records, 1837-1917; literary writings; memorabilia; a Methodist Church register, 1885-1914, from Williamson County, Tennessee; newspaper clippings; paintings; photographs; roll of Company H, 24th Tennessee Regiment, C. S. A.; school reports; sermons and theological theses; sketches and wills. There is more correspondence than any other single type of material in the Crockett Collection Papers. Many of the letters were written by or addressed to members of the family of Dr. John Bell Crockett, a physician in Williamson County, Tennessee. Dr. Crockett has twenty eight letters (1859-1880) and his wife Nancy Dalton (Sayers) Crockett has fifteen letters (1880-1894) in the collection. Their youngest child Annie Bell Crockett was interested in genealogical research, particularly that pertaining to the Bells, the Crocketts and their related families. Thirty-nine of her letters, written to various recipients between 1881 and 1947, deal primarily with her research and contain information about those families. Another daughter of John Bell and Nancy Dalton (Sayers) Crockett, Kathrine Kenner Crockett, married George Livingston Beale, a Methodist minister. There is more correspondence (424 letters) of Kathrine Beale than any other person who figures prominently in these papers. In her letters (1880-1923) to various family members, Kate (as the family called her) Beale wrote about the life of a Methodist minister’s wife, church conferences, other religious activities and family news. Her husband is represented by 131 letters (1901-1923). George L. Beale’s letters concern his life as a Methodist minister, church matters, religious activities and family news.

Ossian Crockett, John Bell Crockett’s oldest child, like his father was a physician. In fifty-eight letters (1880-1922), Ossican Crockett writes to persons in his family about his studies and activities while a student at the Webb School when it was located in Culleoka, Maury County, Tennessee. Dr. Crockett also wrote about his medical practice, his own health, a stay at the resort of East Brook Springs, Tennessee, and a journey to New York City via Savannah, Georgia. Some correspondence of special interest is included in the forty-four letters written by Margaret Bell Crockett, a niece of Dr. and Mrs. John B. Crockett. From 1904 through 1906, Margaret B. Crockett was in Vienna, Austria, studying music under Professor Lechestizky. Her letters to home tell about her studies; the social life of an American in Vienna in the early 1900s; operas, concerts. and other musical events in the city and her travels in Austria and the rest of Europe. Many of the other letters in these papers were sent by members of her family and friends to Miss Crockett while she was in Vienna. Another letter of particular interest was written by Ann Hamilton (Crockett) Upshaw from Washington County, Texas, in 1850. Addressed to her nephew John Bell Crockett, the letter describes crops, planters, churches, medical care and other conditions in the area around Brenham and Chapel Hill, where Ann H. Upshaw and her family had settled. Among the other Crocketts who were related to the family of John Bell Crockett and who wrote letters included in this collection were the following: Albert Percy Crockett, Andrew James Crockett, Caroline “Carrie” (Clark) Crockett, Dorsey T. Crockett, Eleanor Armstrong (Crockett) Crockett, Eugene Bell Crockett, J. Vaulx Crockett, Joanna “Josie” Katie Kenner Crockett, Kate B. Crockett, Lillian James Crockett, Lottie Crockett, Louise (Parkes) Crockett, Maggie L. Crockett, Mary Charlotte (Sayers) Crockett, R. Hugh Crockett, Robert Ernest Crockett and William J. Crockett. For a complete listing of the correspondents in the Crockett Collection Papers, see the index in this register. Two boxes of the papers contain accounts, most of which are those of Dr. John Bell Crockett. There are eight volumes containing the accounts for Dr. Crockett’s medical practice from 1859 to 1877 and ten folders containing loose accounts for his various receipts and expenditures during the years 1850-1889. Other persons having at least one folder of accounts in these manuscripts are Nancy Dalton (Sayers) Crockett, Ossian Crockett and George I. Waddey. In addition, there are six folders of miscellaneous bills, notes and receipts dated between 1827 and 1922. Because of Annie Bell Crockett’s interest in tracing the Bell, Crockett and related families, this collection contains a great deal of genealogical material. In addition to Miss Crockett’s outgoing and incoming correspondence relating to her research, there is one box of genealogical data concerning the following families: Allen, Bass, Beatty, Bell, Buchanan, Caldwell, Campbell, Chapman, Crockett, Edmiston, Edmondson, Germain, Gillespie, Harwell, Herron, Johnston, McClelland, McCutchen, Mallory, Marshall, Powell, Sayers, Simmons and Williamson. Other items of interest to the genealogical researcher are a biographical sketch of the Reverend Claiborn Handly Bell, estate papers for Richard Beale and Andrew James Crockett and wills for John Bell Crockett and John B. Porter. Most of the rest of the collection is composed of documents, land records, greetings, invitations and other memorabilia.
