What are stem cells ?Stem cells are body’s master/mother cells as they can differentiate into different types of cells to form organ systems of the body.

There are four accessible sources namely:• Bone marrow• Peripheral blood• Umbilical cord blood (UCB)• Umbilical cord tissue(Msc, EpSC)

UCB SC have a number of clear advantages over other stem cells:

• Reduced Ageing (Naïve)• Immunological Naivety- minimal GvHD• Ease of collection (safe, painless)

UCB can only be collected at the point of birthUCB can only be collected at the point of birthOne chance One ChoiceOne chance One Choice

Umbilical Cord Stem Cells (UCSCs)

Cord Blood consists of –

Cord Tissues consists of –

UCSCs have shown immense potential to treat diseases and repair injured tissues or organs

► Heart aliments / attack ► Cerebral Palsy Cerebral Palsy ► Stroke ► Leukaemia► Cartilage ► Breast Cancer► Healing of wounds especially that of diabetic ulcers

MSCs can also be used with cord blood stem cells to increase the success rate of cord blood transplants

• Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)• Unidentified stem cells (USCs)

• Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) • Epithelial stem cells (EpSCs)

A leukaemia sufferer has become the first adult in the UK to undergo a bone marrow transplant using blood from a baby's umbilical cord.

Stephen Knox, 31, underwent the treatment - previously only performed on children - after being given just months to live.

The procedure was developed by Professor Stephen Proctor, who used stem cell blood from discarded placentas and umbilical cords.

Prof Proctor, based at Newcastle Hospital Trust's Haematology Unit and at Newcastle University, said Mr Knox had responded well to the transplant.

It's a really exciting development and opens up huge possibilities

Professor Stephen Proctor

The operation was carried out on Mr Knox, of Middleton-St-George, near Darlington, after various chemotherapy sessions failed to stem the leukaemia.

Mr Knox was given treatment to kill off his own bone marrow and then injected with the mixed cord blood that has grown into new bone marrow.

Mr Knox is in remission in hospital after undergoing the procedure in February.

Mr Proctor said: "This treatment was his only hope.

"Stephen is progressing much better than we thought he would and the transplant has worked much better and more quickly than we expected.

Page 17: CrodlifeOct 2009 Presentation

A few points of scientific importance

Picture on the left shows the spinal cord compression (Yellow arrows) and vertebral bone damage (Red Arrows). Picture on the right was taken after the bones were fixed in a surgery using plates and screws.

About the cell source and their mechanism:In any such injury the damage is caused to the neural component and vascular component. The time within which the anatomical correction is undertaken (surgical fixing of the bones in this case) and adjunct therapies are started are very important. Earlier the treatment is given better could be the outcome.

About the cell source and their mechanism:

1. The cells used were NOT from any other source such as embryo or Umbilical cord blood or another human donor, but from his own bone marrow. Therefore this is safe.

2. The cells were not contaminated with any other biological material from human or animal origin.

3. The bone marrow stem cells do the repair in two ways: (i) Majority of the cells secrete trophic factors which help repair neural and vascular damages (ii) a small portion of the cells undergo fusion-differentiation to become nerve cells.

Manipal Hospital discovers cure for Parkinson`s disease (Apr. 04th., 2007)

Mr Andrew Kisana, a 58-year-old patient affected by Parkinson’s disease has shown positive signs of cure with stem cell therapy.

With the success in treating this patient, India-based Manipal Hospital has proved that stem cell therapy could be a potential option for easing out symptoms in a

patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a neuro-degenerative disease that affects people over the

age of 50.

Stem Cell Therapy: The Holy Grail of Medicine

Stem cell therapy is the new buzz in medical corridors with 'miracle' cures being reported everyday. Nancy Singh analyses the promises it holds for various diseases and the growing market for it.

Stem cell therapy is said to be expensive, however, considering that the effects of treatment are long lasting, without requiring expensive repetitive treatment, this seems affordable. Frost & Sullivan estimates that the annual cost of $2,500 per patient for SCT, at the manufacturer's level, is an average cost distributed over several years.

For large scale of production of stem cell lines, consistency is the key factor. Dr Mahendra Rao of Stem Cell Biology Unit, Gerontology Research Center, US, agrees, "Researchers must be able to repeat each other's experiments and establish a baseline set of quality controls that will be required for large scale therapy."

Four-month-old Aarohi Bhatt recently created medical history for being cured of a rare heart condition believed to be untreatable. The cause of her cure—Stem Cell Therapy (SCT) using her own blood at Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai. Besides being a difficult surgery, it was for the first time in the world that SCT was successfully done on a child so young.

• Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) matching between donor and recipient

• Post-therapy care to minimize chances of secondary infection

• Dose of stem cells received

Cell Dose* Is The Single Most Important Factor.According To International Medical Standards, At Least 15 Million Cells Per Kg Is Required Before Anytherapy Is Attempted.
