This lovely paisley made me think of the group The Carpenters for some reason. Perhaps it’s because it is somewhat understated yet brilliant. 100% woven rayon this 56” cloth does not crease easily and would make a lovely dress.

✿✿ AurorAMaybe i have got children’s films on the brain but this cloth made me think of romantic meetings under trees full of blossom. So i have named it after Sleeping Beauty who met her prince in the forest. it has a charming base and pretty floral design. Cloth fit for a queen. it comes in two colours: a) Beige b) Grey


✿✿ A FeAst For the eyes56’’ wide beautifully fine cotton lawn in a bright poppy red with an all over floral design in shades of orange, pink, mauve, light green, pale blue, lemon and black. Light as a feather, beautiful hand and a fine an example of its ilk as you’ll find.


✿✿ As Good As (picture on back cover)if you like viscose dress fabrics and you like a bit of pattern then this is the fabric for you. i am biased but i would love a pair of trouser in this. it is a super lightweight viscose jersey that doesn’t crease easily if at all. it has a super subtle but interesting blue kaleidoscope print on it which will be great with white and denim for the summer or your holidays. Made in France.


✿✿ A rose AMonGst thorns A slight exaggeration as this did come in with some other fabulous gear, this is a superb 64 inch wide superfine wool gabardine in khaki, fairly special. There is not much of it.


✿✿ AnGel deliGht60 inch wide poly/viscose trying to imitate silk. This is as soft as a cloth can get, and amongst other things i bet it makes fabulous nighties. it would actually be perfect for harem pants, or a lovely soft blouse. We have it in four colours: a) Black b) Grey c) Stone d) White


B✿✿ bAr bAr White sheep

Light cream 73% wool, 25% nylon 2% elastane knitted jersey. Not a jersey as in a cotton jersey, but a fairly open knit sort of thing you might make a shawl out of, or a hat and scarf to match; that sort of thing. it’s a soft and scrumbly sort of fabric with a gorgeous hand.

tended to write about things as i came upon them rather

than have them compartmentalised and organised, but

that’s the way we have also bought cloth; go and look at

✿✿ bold stripeNow you can either wear this or sit on it. it looks somewhat like a deck chair fabric, in fact made for medium shorts for a famous and expensive outlet. i know this because we had its sister fabric, year or two back, exactly the same, so i know where it’s from. A medium weight, woven cotton twill in a multi-coloured stripe in oranges/fawn/lemon/bit of pink and white. despite its fairly light weight it is an extremely strong fabric, soft finish so is not pristine or smooth as an ironed poly-cotton very pliable, not stiff in any way. A bit of a blast.

✿✿ blAck suitinGsCHANEL What’s classy and will never date, words once associated with Chanel, this cloth would be happy in any Chanel collection, this is a rather splendid 60” wide 98% wool 2% lycra worsted woven suiting in a quite dark black with a shine to it, absolutely magnificent.


Look At ME WHEN I’M tALkINg to You Black, heavy polyester and elastane dress fabric. This is perfect for trousers and it would also make skirts, school skirts and trousers. A strong fabric with good stretch.


MAYpoLE 60” wide fairly heavy, very drapey, high twist polyester crepe, not a cheap and nasty crepe, it’s a very expensive one, beautifully made and really will make up well. This has been highly popular with you so if you haven’t had it, get it whilst it lasts.


✿✿ blue Moon (picture on front cover)68in viscose lycra jersey in a fantastic shade of blue. This is a wonderful quality italian jersey which has a magnificent hand and will be beautiful to

wear. This jersey has a nice texture, it is still smooth but not as smooth as some of our cotton jerseys. We also have it in ivory.

gENuINE ArtICLE Tropical weight, fine wool worsted suiting is the genuine article, soft as a babies bottom, nearly as beautiful, and fabulous to wear.


LAMb Grey pure new wool suiting / lightweight coating. it is not a plain flat grey, there is a suggestion of other tones in it. it is in a sort of flattened lambs wool weave if you will, with an ever so slightly polished finish. exquisite.

bErtoLLI 43in wide olive green cotton 4 wale lightweight corduroy, although has fairly soft hand it appears to be rather rugged.


goLdENsANds 60” wide (152 cm) A superb quality cotton needlecord fabric in a golden sand colour. Not as fine as a needlecord corduroy and not as thick as a corduroy. i don’t think anybody makes fustian these days but there was a mill about 20 miles from here who probably made the finest fustians ever, perhaps they still do, i should find out. These cloths are of that ilk.


sprINg NEEdLECord Stunning cotton pale grey needlecord fabric. Apparently they are in this seasons colours from a well-known designer brand. We had them in six colours, but if you like corduroys this last one will not let you down.


✿✿ cAMoMile lAWni always thought that this film was a little bit weird. Camomile lawn is perhaps a little bit weirder. its cerise in the grand colour scheme of things it does have other names but i just know it as cerise, glorious colour a deep rich purple pink cotton fabric which is perfect for tops and blouses and trousers. Lightweight.


✿✿ cArAMbA60 inch polyester crepe de chine in either pale orange or pale emerald with an extravagant floral design - quite large floral design in contrasting but blending colours. Beautiful weight and stunning colours if you like it bright. a) Orange b) emerald

✿✿ chAMbrAyHere we have a selection of lovely quality cotton chambray fabrics that will not disappoint. a) red – A 64” wide red cotton chambray made up of red yarns and white yarns so it’s rather more perhaps of a pinky red and then just red the further away you go the less red it becomes, woven on some of the best looms money can buy and a great cloth to wear. b) Lilac – cotton chambray, lovely quality once again. c) pink – ditto d) blue – cotton chambray, wonderfully pale blue cotton chambray


✿✿ cheesecloth - MosAic100% Cotton cheese cloth, pretty rare these days in that most of this, and probably this is made in india where there is a need for long garments with plenty of cloth in them that they can wrap around, wash easily and don’t need to iron. it is a dark cream cloth with a brown, purple, dark red and pink all over quite large abstract design, this will have 26’’ repeat.

✿✿ cotton JerseyYears ago you could fall over this cloth there was so much of it was produced and probably still is, but not in this country as a result of which you got T-shirts that we’re never in shape primarily because of the making up but also because some of the cloth was rubbish. ✿✿ creAM oF bArley60 inch wide quite hefty cream cotton lightweight upholstery cloth. That’s my interpretation it’s not supposed to be that, but i think it’s eminently suitable for throw over loose covers we haven’t got a deal of it and it’s a heck of a cloth - it’s in cream and has a lightly ribbed striped pattern.


✿✿ GeorGette a) Erin - A very pretty floral chiffon, this print makes me feel happy just looking at it. it is just delightful and if you know how to handle your fine dress fabrics this is going to make beautiful things. A long maxi dress for me please.

b) tiffany - For some reason whenever i see houndtooth i think of not just the 60s but also Audrey Hepburn. Perhaps it’s the class and sophistication that both embody. This particular hound tooth is a lovely polyester chiffon dress fabric, perfect for blouses. Why not offset this with a large tiffany diamond. Go on, i’m sure he’ll oblige. Your partner that is.


c) We Live in Hope - Well Caroline does of sunshine at Glastonbury so she can wear this and flounce around. Or who cares? it may be well over by the time you get this.

✿✿ cup cAke As sweet as can be, this lilac tencel linen dress fabric is in the colour of the summer.

Poly/cotton with a tiny little solid daisy like flower joined by swirls of single strand embroidery, obviously on the white it is white and on the cream it’s cream, it’s very pretty and just a little bit different from our usual broderie anglaise. Often the embroidery in broderie Anglaise is shiny; in this the embroidery is matt. This is an expensive looking cloth. a) White b) Cream


✿✿ dAvyThis cloth shares more than just its colour with steel. it is just as hard working. Practically creaseless this lovely grey wool fabric is made in one of italy’s finest mills, it would make a great work dress or maybe even a lightweight jacket. There is a wonderfully subtle pattern in this which i hope you can see in the picture.


✿✿ deMdykeCan you work out the link between the name of this cloth and where we are based? if you can, you will understand the name, as this black polyester satin cloth is also dark and mysterious. its slight shine will have you spell bound.


✿✿ deniMa) de-nimes - 60 inch wide middleweight cotton lycra denim -traditional if you like- in dark blue. Not as good we used to make at our factory in Brierfield but none the less excellent. This one is £7.50 per metre

b) Washed denim - Wonderfully soft 59inch wide washed denim in a super traditional mid blue. This one is £10.95

c) Navy denim - 60 inch Wide soft dark navy (almost black.) it is medium to lightweight, but just light enough for a shirt. This one is £8.00 per metre

d) Heavy weight with lycra - 63 inch/158cm. Very dark navy denim/20% lycra. unlike the other above, this has a texture in the weave; it is subtle and very nice. This one is £8.00 per metre

✿✿ dJenneThis cloth has wanderlust about it, i feel. Made up of tonal shading. This batik design has trails of dark red, rose pinks and warm orange tones this cotton dress fabric is not the normal run of the mill. The white design hints at the tribal/global traveller trend.

This fantastic cloth is made up of 100% woven rayon. Set on a royal blue background, the red, blue, green, yellow, white and orange detail make this fabric look like one of those optical illusions. This will be perfect for the ‘Global Traveller’ trend that comes every summer.


✿✿ Fleur de verre “Flower of Glass” or a character from My Little Pony. However you look at it, i feel the name encapsulates the simple prettiness of this cloth. A white cotton with a blue, pastel pink and rose pink floral design this will keep you cool all summer long.

✿✿ Finest cotton shirtinGsFive wonderful shirting fabrics from Paul Smith. Yum Yum. My three year old says along with a slurping sound and a cheeky look whenever he gets to eat something he likes. it’s funny how this never leaves you, now it’s just over a delicious cloth.

a) kasperof - What do you do when your clogs let water? This is a fantastic pure cotton lawn in a tiniest of woven checks in black and very pale grey. Wonderful. 60 inches wide.

b) building blocks - 60 inch wide cotton shirting in a pink and white minute check pattern that looks a little like the laying of bricks with the centre part of the brick being pink and its surround in white - ever so fine though. Very beautiful women’s shirting from Paul Smith. Contrary to what the name suggests this is very feminine.

c) super 180s - 60 inch wide incredibly fine woven cotton shirting in the finest of yarns in a pink and navy blue ¼” check. Slaveringly beautiful.

d) Where’s Me shirt - A 60’’ wide superfine long twenties cotton poplin in as fine and a small check as you can possible have. The background is off white and the yarns to make up the check are in mauve, possibly a little bit of pink and taupe so the overall effect is for a cloth that has a print rather than rather than a white cloth with a check on it. A supreme example of the weaver’s art.

e) Finest shirting Navy - Beautiful quality cotton lawn shirting in navy.


✿✿ expressoThis woven cloth is a 97% wool 3% elastane suiting, a fine great weave. a) Crepe


b) knit - This is a dark brown knitted cloth is 48’’ wide and is made of mostly wool with a little bit of nylon and lycra in it. Perhaps you would make a coat or jacket of one and a bit of a wrap out of the other. There’s only an eyeful of both, so it’s a pot luck job, whoever comes first gets it but it’s worth having.


✿✿ Fine, Fine, Finest60 inch wide charcoal grey wool worsted ultra-fine suiting in the faintest possible fine chalk stripes, made some time ago it has to be said, in a wonderful mill handles like a cotton lawn or silk absolutely gorgeous.

d) Jack Nicolson - 60 inch wide gabardine chino trousering in the “as good as it gets” category. it comes in dark olive.

These vary in width but all are £6.00 per metre. a) Cherry ripe - 60inch wide (at least) cotton rich cotton/poly gabardine trousering pleasant shade of cherry red, not shouting, not whispering; just talking.

b) Lime grove - 62” poly/cotton trousering. A bright, but not too bright, mint. Very refreshing.

c) Lotta bottle - 59 inch wide cotton rich poly/cotton chino in dark bottle green and with very fine twill weave.

CANvAs a) death in paradise - This is a 63 inch wide softly brushed lightweight cotton canvas soft but strong in the way of the best toilet tissue, it comes in a rather pleasant shade of light camel. it will make anything from wonderful floppy hats to bush trousers.

b) go with the Flow - stone - 60 inch wide cotton trousering in a very fine tight weave almost like a canvas but without the prominence of the weft. Available in this wonderful stone colour. Would look wonderful made up into a pair of trousers.

c) go with the Flow - Navy - The same wonderful fabric but in navy.

d) tonto - 64 inch wide very fine cotton canvas trousering in Wyoming sunset yellow that’s a soft dark yellow.


sANdEd These have all been sanded so they have a lovely soft feel, almost like a baby’s bottom. a) spandau - 56 in wide awfully nice cotton lycra chino trousering in a dark mustardy gold colour.

b) Fatigue - 60ins wide beautifully made lightly brushed cotton twill trousering which has given some highlight to the surface - feels almost like a suede – wonderful.


strIpEs a) pindrop - Now there’s a thing, pinstriped cotton chino in dark fawn with a very lightly sanded finish made from quite fine yarn and tightly woven.

b) pickup - Very fine but substantial cotton Bedford cord with at 1cm intervals a hiccup which gives it a bit of a stripe pattern.

This cost the earth although a tenner is actually cheap.

Believe it or not i know a person who has a shirt made out of this. He has shirts made out of all kinds of things but this i though took the biscuit. it’s a 59” wide, 100% cotton, deep cream/slightly yellowy base cloth with an all over kitchen print in navy blue depicting tea pots, pepper pots, onions, pea pods etc with the word for these printed on the fabric. A great piny fabric, excellent cloth.

✿✿ oxFordThis is an early example of what people were trying to do to save cotton by adding a little bit of synthetic, in this case this is a 74% cotton/26% polyester procured, pre-shrunk, traditional oxford shirting, as the aforementioned processing would suggest it is a very well finished cloth with a lovely hand and was made for a very famous shirt maker, who sadly is no longer, well no longer making in this country anyway, so it’s a bit long in the tooth but none the worse for that, it was made in Lancashire in one its finest mills.

These two super fabrics came in the shipment from Germany. Both remind me of the seaside.

a) rumpled - A 63inch wide viscose/linen cloth which i think has been made to look as good as ironed as when it’s gone all rumpled it has character. Suitable for skirts and floppy trousers.

b) seawashed - 60inch wide cotton linen/viscose dress fabric in a lovely shade of pale green which has something of a look of seawashed turf. i wonder if it’s a good to wear as seawashed turf is to play golf from!


✿✿ loosely speAkinG i’m not loosely speaking when i say that this is a brilliant cloth. A soft navy fabric with embroidery and carefully placed cut outs to create winding lines. A lovely polyester jersey.

✿✿ piGeon Force60 inch wide cotton check lightweight flannel shirting from Paul Smith with just a hint of bluegrass about it. it has a slub in the weft which shows up in the paler part of the cloth and the cloth itself is made up of pale grey, dark grey and purple yarns forming a gingham-like check. it has a wonderful hand and can be best described as a wonderful cloth.

✿✿ printed cord This lovely beige cotton/lycra (3%) needlecord is a trouser and jacket weight. Someone asked me if it was suitable for tops; it might be but i am not sure. There is an abstract overprint in a self-colour which makes this very interesting indeed.

Another Marks & Spencer’s suiting fabric. it is a polyester, viscose and lycra, lightweight summer trousering in a camel or beige colour; it’s tough but exceedingly soft fabric, quite creaseless and easy to look after cloth. Wonderful for jackets and clothes for travelling in. a) Beige b) Camel


✿✿ sAnds oF the iWo GiMA60’’ wide, 70% linen, 30% cotton. “denim” fabric in shades of sand of brown and white yarn. it doesn’t have a very soft hand and just a slight sheen to the surface which is created by having so much linen in it. That being the case, of course it will crease somewhat, so you need a good iron. But a lovely cloth to own. do you keep cloths just so you can own them? it’s a great cloth. Would go with a lot of stuff.


✿✿ sherpA Fleece64” wide sherpa fleece in black and burgundy. i need to go further than that. The background is black with fawn interference as it were laid upon which is what appears to be a quite separate article in brown twigs which are slightly raised from the main body of the cloth. it’s not too heavy, but looks warm and a thing of purpose, if you had an Airedale terrier he would get lost in this. Fabulous stuff but only an eyeful of it sadly.

The floral design is placed on a white base cloth, but (here’s where it gets clever) parts of the background are decorated with strategic dots to show another flower. it is an ideal cloth for summer: lightweight and fresh. You’re sure to meet your knight wearing this. a) Red b) Green


✿✿ shortsi have here before me two fabrics i would make shorts out of. You could have a pair in each. a) Humbug - Absolutely delicious sage green and cream cotton seersucker, 2mm sage with a tiny pindrop outline in brown next to 2mm cream pinstripe. Beautiful cloth. Get it whilst you can.


✿✿ striped tAFFetA – turquoise i am not absolutely certain that this cloth isn’t a lining, if it’s a lining it’s a stormer, if it’s for skirts, waistcoats, bodices, that type of thing, it’s extremely good. Basically it is a brown/ turquoise/ aqua stripe with finer brown/ turquoise/ aqua stripes bordering the wider three main coloured stripes. does that make sense? Or have i been wasting my time. it is a great cloth, a nice hand. 100% polyester.

a) one scoop or two - 60 inch wide super fine cotton poplin in a lovely cream with the faintest of dotted pinstripes at 6mm intervals. There’s an awful lot of yarn in this cloth. This is £6.25 per metre.

b) How now… - 60 inch wide cotton lightweight trousering in dark chocolate sort of brown, a light sanding has given it a fabulous hand. This is £6.25 per metre.

c) dong Ho - A rather splendid 60 inch wide cotton shirting. Just the thing for protecting your head and shoulders tying it with a red and white band and galloping across the desert- if of course you are daft enough you will meld into the background as it colour is almost that of the sand. ✿✿ Who needs spAnxWhat a cloth! This is a navy cotton/elastane twill suiting fabric. Heavy weight, but not thick, make a shirt out of this and hold everything in.


✿✿ WoWis it a plane? is it a bird? What is it? i don’t know! Here is a cotton/lycra heavy twill large floral printed fabric, in black, taupe, grey and white made for Coast. They used it for coats. You could bet it would make fabulous curtains and cushions too


✿✿ WysteriA lAneA fine lawn, just like the ladies on wisteria lane, they know how to keep a nice lawn. This is rather fine too. Pink Lawn.

and finally...i just want to squeeze these in, they have just arrived but they are good value jerseys. We have three of them and are as follows:

a) take Flight – 78inch 160cm wide decent quality lilac viscose jersey fabric onto which has been printed a small white and bright pink random small scale bird print. The birds are like the ones a child would draw, a tick like shape on a drawing with a big round sun.

b) black on black – 60 inch 150cm wide lightweight black viscose jersey fabric onto which has been printed a shiny black penny size spot in rows across the fabric, it is half drop so the repeat is not in squares. i nice jersey with a bold pattern which made into the right garnet will look rather classy.

c) random – unlike the one above this cotton jersey fabric has a random spot print in three colours, the lilac ground pale aqua and pale lilac spot have been printed onto a white ground creating the third spot colour. They are about the size of a penny and sit very close together, so no difficulties with matching the repeat. Also a decent quality.
