Thedesigns of the keyboard. screen, and sys­tem layout are the result of an extensivehuman factors engineering program.

The Cl0 keyboard is very conve­nient for the user. Its longconnectingcord and light weight make it easy tomove around-as easy as moving ahand-held calculator. It has a hand rest­ingarea below the keys that is especiallyhelpful when using the keyboard forlong periods of time. And the full-sized,sculptured keys are comfortable andplaced where you expect them to be.

The screen uses a P-31 non-glaregreen phosphor. Tests show that no dis­play color is measurably superior togreen in minimizing eye fatigue. Andthe green display offers otheradvan­tages. For example, the human eye seesgreen light most easily, so the display it­self doesn't need to have as much inten­sity as with other colors. Therefore, thedisplay surface lasts longer.

In fact, those same programs can berun on Cromemco's high-performancemulti-user microcomputers equippedwith our Dual Processor Unit (DPU).

And to expand the capability of theC10 itself, it can be used direclly withthose high-performance computers,as a terminal or interconnected work­station. Linking to a larger computeris easy. because the commands toconnect are written into the C 10user menu.

The ColO has extensive built-in com­munications capability. For more com­plex applications several units can beinterconnected and used as distributedworkstations in a networked environ·ment, interfaced to larger Cromemcosystems, or used as front end processorsfor mainframe computers.

The C-10 computer itself contains anindustry-standard high speed Z-80Amicroprocessor and 64K bytes of internalRAM, a necessary capacity for many ofthe most popular software programs.Standard features include specialgraphics capabilities, built-in diag­nostics, and flexible, easy-to-useinterface ports.

The optional CLQ printer is a low­priced letter quality 120-word-per-min­ute Daisy wheel printer, ideal for wordprocessing applications.

The high-resolution 12-inch CRT dis­plays 25 lines with a full 80 charactersall each line. And, it's easy on the eyes.

The ergonomically designed stand is anoption for the ColO. It provides fullswivel and tilt capability for the termi­nal, so the screen can be positionedwhere it is most comfortable for the user.

The double-sided, double-density sV4"disk drive provides 390K bytes of diskstorage (over 100 typewritten pages),more than twice the capacity of manyother personal computers.

The detached keyboard is designed forcomfort and efficiency. Full-sized keysare sculptured for comfort and arelocated in normally expected places.A front-deck provides space for palmsupport.

Almost as much time was spent inthe design of the human factors for theC-10 system as in the design of theelectronics. The results are a systemthat is comfortable to use, even overlong periods of time, and a reductionin operator fatigue.

The C-lO display shows 25 lines of80 characters each, a total of 2000characters at anyone time. Therefore,the inconvenience of viewing onlypieces of a particular text or spread­sheet is minimized. And the time re­quired to shift or jump to different sec­tions of a file is reduced.

For example, with a typical businessreport page (see illustration), the C-10allows the user to view 25 lines of thefull width of a page of the report. Withsmaller displays, the user can viewonly parts of the line at anyone time,as is shown by the screen sizes super­imposed on the illustration.

Since the user can read entire sec­tions (without shifting to the right orleft), proofreading, correcting, andchanging are accomplished much morequickly.

The keyboard for the ColO is ex·tremely lightweight (4 pounds), yet usesmore advanced technology than is usedin most computer products. It actuallyweighs less than many small calculatorsthat the business person uses every day.

Therefore, it can easily be maneu­vered out of the way on the desktop,held in a relaxed position when conve­nient, such as when exploringalterna­tivesolutions to a business problem, orused in typical desktop situations.

The keyboard is full-sized, but is de­signed with a low profile so it doesn', getin the way.

It also has a front-deck area that al­lows the palms to rest on the base of thekeyboard. This reduces fatigue and ac­tually can improve accuracy and pro­ductivity by reducing "miss-hits" andtired muscles.

The human factor also applies to theease of use of the ColO. When the ma­chine is turned on, a "menu" appearson the screen. The user can select thedesired function or software packageby entering a selection from the menu.

In addition, special HELP functionsare available at the touch of a key, sothe user can immediately referenceexplanatory notes on programs orspecific instructions. And complete,clearly illustrated, easy-to-use docu­mentation is provided for the systemand software programs.

The CST ergonomic stand for the ColOis another example of Cromemco's con­cern forthe personal comfort of the user.

The display can be positioned for bestviewing by the individual, regardless ofthe person's height, by adjusting the tilton the stand. In addition, the terminalcan be rotated through a full circle hori­zontally so the person does not have tobe directly in front of the unit to accu­rately view the screen.

Besides the convenience and comfortto the user, this also increases accuracyby reducing "off-angle" reading errors.

I . . I' When we say "performance," we mean features in the C-l0 system that directlyaffect the results attainable by the user.

Research indicates that the most important hardware features to the user are theinternal memory available to the user (RAM), the size of the CRT display, and thedisk storage capacity.

Since the software program being used is held in internal memory, the 64K bytesof RAM in the C-l0 provide much more flexibility than personal computers withsmaller internal RAM capacity.

The full-sized display (25 lines of 80 characters each) allows the user to view alarger portion of text or spread sheet data than is possible with computers which usesmaller displays.

And the floppy disk drives used with the C-lO system each have 390K bytes ofstorage capacity, up to twice the capacity of many more expensive personalcomputers. This larger storage capacity avoids inconveniences. In word processing,for example, the user needs backup space, editing space and working space for thetext. Also, more data files can be stored on each disk.

I Cromemco has a well documented reputation for high qual­ityand high reliability. The internal standards that resulted in that reputation havebeen applied to the design and manufacture of the C-lO.

In addition to the high quality and high reliability manufacturing standards, theC·10 uses three custom large scale integrated (LSI) circuits for key areas of the de·sign. These LSI circuits reduce the parts count of active circuits by over 55 percentand promote greater reliability because there are fewer parts to cause problems andless heat generated by the parts.

The C-l0 uses the highest technology available in any personal computer today.

I I ,. I ! I , ; lOne of the most useful long-term benefitsof the C·10 computer system is its compatibility with larger, more powerfulCromemco systems.

The C-l0 can serve as an intelligent terminal oras a connected workstation. Infact, the convenient user menu in the C·lO operating program includes simple com­mands to connect and disconnect from a larger associated system. The user can eas·ily access the large system or operate a personal workstation with two simplecommands.

The C-l0 operating system allows access to the extensive library of currentCP/M programs and to the wide variety of advanced programming languagesfrom Cromemco. TheC-l0SP package includes Structured BASIC. In addition, theuser has access to higher level languages such as FORTRAN, RATFOR,COBOL, and LISP.

TheC·lO provides a clear path of software compatibility with a family of morepowerful computer systems. Software programs that are developed for use with theC-l0 can be used on these larger Cromemco systems. Even the high performancemulti-user computers with 32 bit architectures. Therefore, the user'sinvestment in software programs, lime, and money is not wasted if professionalneeds demand a larger system.

In addition, the C·10 is equipped with an RS232 serial data communications poriand can emulate a wide variety of terminals and data protocols. Several C-l0 sys­tems can be interconnected to form a network or can serve as distributedworkstations.

The system also provides serial and parallel printer interface ports and a parallelVO expansion port.
