Life Education Van This week all classes visited Harold the healthy giraffe at the Life Education van. They participated in a variety of activities that were suited for their year levels, including themes that focused on body awareness, safe choices and becoming cyber wise.

The students at Crookwell Public School have been fortunate enough to participate in the Life Education van program for a number of years, enhancing their knowledge about health related topics. Students were treated to a pat and cuddle from Harold at the end of their session.

Kindergarten are introduced to Harold for the first time.

Jordan Tate participated in an activity to match posters.

Tyler Benn adds a tomato in the ‘everyday food’ hoop.

Lennon Osborne was excited to pat Harold.

Tyler Benn jokes around with Harold the giraffe.

No Hat …… Play In The Shade Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world with 140,000 new cases and 1,000 deaths recorded annually. The increasing occurrence of skin cancer in Australia is a matter of concern with skin cancers accounting for 80% of all new cancers diagnosed each year.

The A.C.T. and surrounding region has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in Australia. The major cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation over many years, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Even if exposure does not cause obvious sunburn, damage still occurs and accumulates over the years.

To help protect students from over exposure to the sun during Term 4, the school’s policy of ‘No Hat…Play in the Shade,’ will be strictly enforced.

Please encourage your child to wear their school hat at school to help keep them sun safe.

N.B. Adjustable microfibre school hats are available from the uniform shop at a cost of $15.00.

Levi and Lachlan model the school hat which protects little

faces from sunburn.

Daniel Morcombe Day, Friday 9th November

2018 The Daniel Morcormbe foundation supports the promotion of child safety throughout Australia. To support this worthwhile cause, Forum will be holding a fundraiser on Friday 9

th November. Since

2005, Bruce and Denise have campaigned to make Australia a safer place for all children. The Foundation has two main aims, to educate children and young people to remain safe in a physical and online environment and to support young victims of crime.

“Our goals are to make Australia safe for all young people and to support victims of crime”

On Friday 9

th November 2018, teachers will run special

child safety lessons designed by the Daniel Morcombe foundation to reinforce the important message the group aims to have all children understanding. Forum would like to ask that students come dressed in red clothing and bring a gold coin donation to school. Money raised will be collected by Forum members and forwarded to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Student Supervision As teachers are not legally required to be on duty before 8.45am of a morning, teachers are not rostered to supervise students who arrive at school early. Please do not send your child to school before 8.45am to help safeguard your child’s safety.

For families who need to send their children to school before 8.45am or collect them after 3.30pm there is before and after school care provided by The Crookwell Neighbourhood Centre.

Thank you for your compliance.

Headlice ~ Please be Vigilant in Their Eradication! There have been several reports of children being infested with head lice across district schools. Lice certainly don’t discriminate about who they infest. They are a persistent problem. Please inspect your child’s hair regularly and take immediate action if you find any signs of their presence.

The information below may prove useful and assist with effective treatment:-

The topic of head lice is often a taboo subject and embarrassing when our child gets them, but relax – it has nothing to do with being clean or dirty. Head lice are caught like a common cold is – by being close to someone who has them (or sharing hats or brushes) – so it can happen to any one of us! The good thing is that they aren’t life-threatening and they are easily treated.

The first step is to look out for them. As only 50% of children with head lice will itch, it is a good idea to check your child’s hair once a week. Whilst the lice themselves are very small and hard to see, the eggs are more visible as small whitish flecks firmly attached to the hairs, usually quite close to the scalp. If you see these, don’t panic! The treatment is easy and requires only two important and inexpensive tools: white hair conditioner – any brand and price will do – and a fine tooth comb (available at our local chemists).

Treatment

1. Wash your child’s hair as you usually would, then apply a generous amount of white conditioner to the hair and leave it.

2. Next use the fine-tooth comb to comb through your child’s hair, wiping the comb on white tissue. Check the tissue for dead lice which will look like small brown spots. 3. Continue combing until no more conditioner can be combed out (this may take five minutes or more in a child with long hair) and leave to dry.

The conditioner works by immobilizing and suffocating the head lice. After one treatment your child is considered safe to return to school/contact with others, but for proven lice eradication this treatment must be repeated every second night for a total of four treatments (i.e. – over seven days), to immobilize any further lice which may have hatched and prevent the remaining eggs from hatching. You may still see ‘eggs’ in your child’s hair – don’t panic! The glue that the lice use is very sticky and empty egg cases may remain in the hair, growing out as the hair grows, over a period of weeks. To prevent head lice becoming a problem in your home, a simple solution is to treat your child/children one night a week with white conditioner and a fine-tooth comb.

Responsible Pet Care Program The Responsible Pet Care Program will be returning to our school next Thursday for all infant students. Students will learn through dance, role play and song how to approach and be safe around dogs. Scarily, ‘Children aged 0-12 are statistically in the highest risk category for dog attack injuries requiring hospitalisation’. They will be bringing along their trained dog for the morning, where students will be able to practise what they learn. There is no cost for this incursion and it will take place in our school hall. Please phone the school office on 48321213 if you have any questions.

School Uniform Thank you to the families who are ensuring their child/children attend school wearing full school uniform. The wearing of uniform suggests a sense of pride a student feels in being part of the Crookwell Public School team.

N.B. If you are finding it difficult to provide uniforms for your child/children please phone Mr Whittington on 48321213 to arrange a confidential solution to the concern.

2019 Classes Enquiries about classes for next year are being received. When all staff positions are filled and children have been grouped, with academic and social considerations taken into account, an announcement will be made in News & Views on Friday 7

th December, 2018.

Enrolling Now For 2019

If you know of families who will have children starting school at Crookwell Public in 2019 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Form promptly. This will allow staffing arrangements for next year to be firmly in place by the commencement of the new academic year.

Families new to the school community are invited to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an interview with Mr Whittington, meet the staff, tour the school and receive a Crookwell Public School Information package.

Thank you to the families who have already completed and submitted their child’s application to enrol.

Make each night count School aged children generally need 10 hours sleep per night to be able to function at their best at school each day. A good night’s sleep is crucial to our mental and physical wellbeing.

Year 5 Overnight Canberra Excursion In week 5 of term 4, students from Year 5 will be venturing to Canberra for an overnight visit to experience a range of wonderful and exciting venues. Students will head off from school bright and early in the morning on Thursday 15th November and return in the afternoon of Friday 16

th

November. Students will visit Parliament House, Questacon, National Gallery of Australia, Mt Stromlo Observatory, the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian War Memorial. All these visits tie in to, and help consolidate, what the students have been and will be learning in the classroom this semester.

The cost of the excursion will be approximately $212 per student. This cost will cover transport to, from and around Canberra for the two days, overnight accommodation, dinner on Thursday night, supper, breakfast and lunch on Friday and all entry and workshop fees to the places we will be visiting.

We are arranging a raffle to reduce the cost for each student. If you have any items such as wood or vouchers that you could contribute to the raffle this would be greatly appreciated. Each student will be given raffle tickets to sell. Money raised from the tickets each student sells will come off their individual excursion cost, so students have the opportunity to significantly reduce the cost of the excursion. The selling of tickets is optional. The remaining balance is to be paid by the end of Week 2 Term 4, Friday 26

th October.

If there are any issues with payment please contact the school.

There will be additional medical and equipment notes in the upcoming weeks.

CUA School Colour Fun Run This term the P&C will be holding a major fundraising event,

a COLOUR FUN RUN! After the success of last year’s fun

run we were very keen to do it again! The event will be held

on Friday 14th December at the Lyn Cooper fields (soccer

fields). This is a sponsorship based fundraiser and we are

looking to raise money to purchase some fantastic new

additions for our wonderful school. Last year our amazing

students and their families raised over $10 000 which we

used to set up a brand new reading program for our infants

students and put towards new interactive TV’s.

The CUA School Colour Fun Run is a healthy fundraiser that

we hope you’ll all get behind. The event sends the right

message to students about having fun while getting involved

and being active, it will be a fantastic way to finish off the

school year. We’re looking for all students to participate and

we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love

our parents and friends to come down on the day.

Sponsorship forms have been sent home with each child this

week, detailing how to set up your own online fundraising,

even your friends and family far away can sponsor your

child! Students who raise just $10 will receive a prize, the

more you raise the better prize you can choose. These

prizes range from handballs to TV’s and robots! Fundraising

will only be open until Friday 23rd

November and after that

date you will have 5 days to order your own prize online

which will be presented to you on the day of the Colour Fun

Run.

If you will be available to assist on the BBQ or in some other

way on the day I encourage you to contact the school on 02
