Roles and Responsibilities

Responsibilities

• Assess adequacy of collections

• Identify breeding programs that are in danger of being lost

• Advise curators on regeneration procedures

Responsibilities

• Monitor staffing and infrastructure for NPGS sites and provide suggestions for increased support

• Provide means for commodity groups to voice opinions on the need for genetic resources

• Maintain knowledge of international genetic resource programs

Responsibilities

• Develop concise reports when requested on germplasm activities for each crop(s)

• Maintain updated versions of the Crop Germplasm Committee reports and vulnerability statements

• Maintain the descriptor lists in GRIN and ensure appropriate data is entered into the system

Responsibilities

• Advise curators and GRIN on molecular data that should be incorporated into the system

• Suggest improvements for the GRIN public system

Accomplishments

ALL CGCs

• Developed descriptor lists

• Developed the CGC Report/Vulnerability Statement

• Reviewed collection gaps and needs

Apple

• Supported germplasm exploration trips to Central Asia

• Supported backup of apple collection in liquid nitrogen at NCGRP

• Developed core collection and sent it to several locations for evaluation

Clover

• Supportive in regenerating collection

• Very active ensuring GRIN data (passport and evaluation) was complete

• Very active in exploration and ensuring a good representation for the genus

Grape

• Established a research evaluation program for accessions under quarantine

• Quickly took action to repropagate the collection to safeguard it against Pierce’s Disease

Leafy Vegetable, Pepper, Root & Bulb

• Regenerated the Onion, Celery & Pepper collections with assistance from State and private industry

Sunflower

• Ongoing Exploration Program

• Ongoing Evaluation Program

Maize

• Latin American Maize Project (LAMP)

• Germplasm Enhamncement of Maize (GEM)

Bean, Pea

• Developed programs to clean up collection from seed borne viruses

Food Legume

• Found resistance in collection to a serious disease of Lentil and incorporated it into new varieties

Quarantine Issues

• Apple, Pear, Potato, Prunus, Rice, Sweetpotato, Sugarcane

Woody Landscape

• Developed a program to partner with several arboreta to maintain national collections (NAPCC)

Small Grains

• Major ongoing evaluation programs
