Ninety players came from Blue Mountains, Bundanoon, Cheltenham, Eastwood, Epping, Hazelbrook, Hurstville, Jamberoo, Killara, Maitland, Manly, Nelson Bay, Nowra, Port Hacking, Strathfield, Southern Highlands, Sutherland, Sydney and Urunga Croquet Clubs. President, Robyn Wallace welcomed all players before handing over to Master of Ceremonies, John Eddes, to outline the programme for the event. On offer were twelve activities designed to test various croquet skills. There was also a chance to play a short game of Golf Croquet. Each supervising club provided a prize for the winner of the activity, with the following results: A highlight of the day was the “Introduction to Gateball” presented by Epping Club. For many, this was their first experience of this new game which is proving to be very popular among mallet sports devotees. For association players, accustomed to playing the twoball croquet shot, sparking the ball in Gateball can be a bit of a challenge! As is usually the case in February, the hot day made it uncomfortable for many and a number of players were not able to participate as much as they would have liked. It has been suggested that perhaps the event could be moved to a date in Autumn when cooler weather would allow the activities to continue longer and there would be a greater benefit for those country players whose travel time was greater than their playing time! Kath Coull (Sutherland) Tommy Thompson (Nelson Bay) Fay Simpson (Killara) Barb Piggott (Urunga) Jeanette Testoni (Wollongong Dina Sofer (Sydney) Jack Cohen (Sydney) Pat Gilchrist (Eastwood) Heather Smallbone (Chatswood) Yvonne Webster (Strathfield) Geoff Boyce (Strathfield) Sharlene Subbi (Ja,mberoo) & Marlene McMullen (Sutherland) 70 members representing 23 clubs and 3 individual members gathered for the annual Christmas celebration and Trophy Presentation on Saturday 11 December. The function was held at Roseville’s RSL Club by way of making it easier for some clubs to attend. Of course, this meant that what was gained on the roundabout was lost on the swings, and some usual attendees from some clubs in the southern areas of the state were unable to attend. As usual, there was a long list of winners and runnersup in the various events offered by Croquet NSW in the course of a year. Some new faces appeared, whilst many of the frequent winners were still winning. Full list of results can be found in the Yearbook. The recipient of the President’s Award for 2010 was Geof McDonald. President Robyn Wallace made the following citation for this presentation: “The award is made to Geof because of his dedication to croquet and the work he has put in for Croquet NSW. Geof has been a state representative in both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet. For a number of years he has been State Director of Coaching, and has also been on the executive of CNSW. In his role as SDC he has shown great courage in adversity and formidable determination to get the job done in whatever he took on. Geof and Jacky have been the most travelled CNSW officers since Tony Hall and have gone out of their way to promote croquet and encourage improvement in players and coaches”. has had a late start to our 2011 playing year as a result of a heavy invasion of foreign grass and weeds, all due to our continual wet weather through December and January. There have been some early starts (7 am) with members weeding and patching our lawns. If you did not know better it would be easy to conclude you were witnessing a sight in a paddy field, with many heads down and tails up. The highlight of these efforts have been the bacon &eggs breakfasts to feed the willing workers. If all goes according to plan, our lawns will be up to a playing standard enabling commencement of play by 14 February. Be assured that any weeds that have the cheek to pop up from now on will meet their demise rather swiftly. 68530_CroquetNSW_March2010.indd 1 21/02/11 9:42 AM
