Cross Bookmark – two patterns Two more charts for alternative borders added as of ( March 2015). They are only pictured for the Pattern 2 bookmark above but could be added to either one. You will find them below the original charts. I have now (October 2014) revised this page and included the US & UK versions on the same page. I have also added charts. The Pattern 2 bookmark is my preferred version as pictured above. I have not included the cord at the top in the charts as I am sure you can add a cord or tassel as you prefer.

  • Cross Bookmark two patterns

Two more charts for alternative borders added as of ( March 2015). They are only pictured for the Pattern 2 bookmark above but could be added to either one. You will find them below the original charts. I have now (October 2014) revised this page and included the US & UK versions on the samepage. I have also added charts. The Pattern 2 bookmark is my preferred version as pictured above. I have not included the cord at the top in the charts as I am sure you can add a cord or tassel as you prefer.

  • First new edging

    Second new edging

  • US versions(UK versions are at the bottom)The patterns are very straightforward.I used a no. 8 (1.25mm) hook with #10 cotton and a no. 10 (1mm) hook with #20 cotton. Pattern 1

I used a magic loop to start as I am finally getting to like it but you could use a four chain loop if you prefer. To make the upright.Start: Into the loop work, 4ch (=1st trc), 3trc, 2ch, 4trc, 4ch and turn.Row 1: Work 3trc, 2ch, 3trc into 2ch gap of row below then 1trc into fourth chain, 4ch and turnRepeat this row until you have made 14 shells, omitting the 4ch on the last row, and finish off yarn. To make the arms. Now working into the 4ch gap between ninth and tenth shells for one and the trc gap betweenninth and tenth shells for the other.Join thread at the right, 4ch, 3trc, 2ch, 4trc , 4ch and turnThen repeat row 1, three times , finishing off the last row as before, unless you are making theedging in the same colour when you can leave the thread for the second arm to continue working the edging.[I find it very hard to find a suitable needle to sew in the ends of crochet cotton, as if the eye isbig enough to thread then the needles is hard to force through the fabric. But here by creatingan edge you can crochet over all the ends but the last and so save some work.] To create an edging.Using the same or a contrasting thread and turning the cross over butStarting where you are, work 1ch then (sc,2ch, sc) twice into each of the 4ch or tr gaps round the edge. ( I only worked the (sc, 2ch, sc) once either side of the inner corners of the cross shape as that keeps it flatter.)For the ends of the arms I worked (sc, 2ch, sc) into the first 2 trcs, then sc into the next trc, 2ch, sc into the gap. Then the reverse for the other side.To finish off, I used a double strand of thread and crocheted a chain of about twenty six stitches, joined the last six ch in a loop with a slst and worked scs all the way round the loop. Ifound this took about 1.5m doubled.

But you could work this at the bottom of the cross if you prefer or add a tassel.

  • Pattern 2

I used a magic loop to start as I am finally getting to like it but you could use a eight chain loop if you prefer. To make the centre.Start: Into the loop work, 4ch (=1st trc), 2trc, 2ch then (3trc, 2ch) seven times. Join with a slstinto the fourth chain. To make the arms.Row 1: 4ch then 3trc, 2ch, 3trc into gap to the left, trc into ch nearest 1tr of row below. 4ch and turn.Row 2: Work 3trc, 2ch, 3trc into 2ch gap of row below then 1trc into fourth chain, 4ch and turnRepeat Row 2 until you have made 3 more shells (that's four in total for the arm), omitting the 4ch on the last row, and finish off yarn.Rejoin the yarn to make two more arms as above then finish by doing an arm with an extra four shells to make the upright but do not finish off the yarn unless you are using a contrastingcolour.[I find it very hard to find a suitable needle to sew in the ends of crochet cotton, as if the eye isbig enough to thread then the needles is hard to force through the fabric. But here by creatingan edge you can crochet over all the ends but the last and the one at the beginning and so save some work.] To create an edging.Using the same or a contrasting thread and turning the cross over butStarting where you are work 1ch then the edging for the end of the arms thus: sc, 2ch, sc intothe first 2 trcs, then sc into the next trc, 2ch, sc into the gap. Then the reverse for the other side. The work sc,2ch, sc twice into each of the 4ch or trc gaps round the edge. ( I only worked the sc, 2ch, sc once either side of the inner corners of the cross shape as that keeps it flatter.)And the edging for the end of the arms as described above. To finish off, I used a double strand of thread and crocheted a chain of about twenty six stitches, joined the last six ch in a loop with a slst and worked scs all the way round the loop. Ifound this took about 1.5m doubled. But you could work this at the bottom of the cross if you prefer or add a tassel. I hope this doesnt sound too complicated, it is really straightforward once you get intoit.
