SEASON PREVIEW

CROSS COUNTRY

The Western Michigan cross country team is poised to move into the top of the Mid-American Conference with an experienced team that finished sixth at last year’s MAC Championships behind the running of two freshman. The Broncos return three of their top five runners from last year, led by 2006 Second Team All-MAC runner Jill Odom. The sophomore from Highland, Ind., finished 12th in last year’s championships in her rookie appearance in the event. Her time of 18:13 in the 5K event was the fastest 5K time of the year for the Brown & Gold. She also was the Broncos’ second finisher at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Another sophomore, Jennifer Roberts, finished one spot shy of MAC honors of her own in her first conference championship meet by finishing 15th. She came back and had the Broncos’ top finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a 56th place finish. The other MAC scorer returning is junior Kristi Powers, the only Bronco to score in every meet last season for the Brown & Gold. Western Michigan will also benefit from the return of three seniors Katie Kelel, Nicole Blake and Rachel Bumann along with junior Michele Wittbrodt.

TRACK & FIELD

On the heels of what has to be considered one of the most successful campaigns in WMU history, the Broncos look to be even better in 2007. In just five short years, the Broncos have become one of the top 30 teams in the nation, and they have done so with a well-balanaced TEAM philosophy. “We believe that track and field is a TEAM sport,” head coach Kelly Lycan said, “and that’s what we have—a real team.” Having national-caliber athletes in all the event areas—sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws and distance—has allowed the Broncos to win such prestigious meets as the Alabama Relays, and it is that overall team depth which will, year in and year out, result in WMU being able to contend for the top spot in the state of Michigan and in the Mid-American Conference.

Sprints In the short sprints, the Broncos are young, fast and getting faster. Last year the 4x100m relay broke the school record and won at the world-renowned Penn Relays. This group is spearheaded by Joy Eloms, a former Indiana state champ in the 100m dash, who has improved tremendously in her time as a Bronco. So much so that last season, she qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 100m and captured the school record in the 60m dash. And when it comes to the long sprints, no team in MAC history has been as dominant as Western Michigan over the past five seasons. Over that period, WMU quarter-milers have won a MAC title in the 400m every year, winning four out of the past five indoor MAC crowns. During that same time span, the Broncos have also dominated the 4x400m relay and have established new all-time MAC records in each of the last two seasons. The leader of this present group is Becky Horn, who already owns two MAC titles in the 400m after just her sophomore season. Horn owns the WMU school record in the 400m outdoors as well as the indoor mark in the 200m. Horn is just one member of the Broncos’ deep stable of quarter-milers. Seniors Shayna Sangster and Sheriese Lucas, sophomores Jennifer Sabra and Danielle Brown and the versatile Eloms are all potential MAC scorers in the 400m and together they make up the 4x400m relay which has been the best in the state of Michigan for the past five years and has been top 20 in the nation three of the past four years, beating teams from LSU, UCLA and North Carolina. Freshmen Alexis Brown and Melanie Gilbert look like very promising newcomers who could be the next in a long line of champion 400m runners.

Hurdles Boasting one of the deepest and most talented hurdle crews in school history, WMU is blessed with no fewer than five 400m hurdlers who could break 60 seconds and qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Last year, three of the Broncos did just that. Sangster topped the list with the fastest time of 59.10 in just her first full season of running hurdles. Freshmen Sabra and Danielle Brown not only qualified for the NCAA Regionals, but also gained the distinction of qualifying for the USATF Junior Nationals. Jerae Protho, a formuer USATF Junior Nationals qualifier, along with Colleen Stein and freshman Alexis

Brown round out the long hurdles. The Broncos excel in the short hurdles as well. The WMU foursome of Sangster, Brown, Protho and Sabra finished 2006 as the 11th fastest shuttle hurdle squad in the country. Sangster, Protho, Danielle Brown and Sabra could all be well under the magic 14-second barrier this outdoor season. Stein, Alexis Brown and heptathletes Kendra Erskine and Michelle Mathewson are also accomplished 100m hurdlers and add quality depth to this group.

Jumps In the horizontal jumps, some familiar names will lead the Broncos into the sand pit. Eloms was WMU’s top long jumper last season as she broke the indoor school record. Seniors Lucas and Janee’ Beville have both been over 19 feet and are looking to fine senior campaigns. Lucas looks poised to make the triple jump record her own, as she has seen steady improvement every year. Eloms and Beville also look to put their names high on the WMU all-time list. In the high jump, Horn returns as WMU’s top performer after scoring points in the MAC as a sophomore. Newcomers Mathewson and Alexis Brown will be looking to make their mark in competition. The pole vault will be ably handled by veteran MAC-scorer Stacy Orosz. Orosz flirted with the NCAA Regional standard last year and looks ready to have a “breakout” season this year. Pushing her to new heights will be two hungry freshman, Lisa Krupp and Bailey Wandyg, who bring to the Broncos some fine credentials of their own.

Middle Distance/Distance The Broncos feature one of the top middle distance crews in the conference. Odom had one of the best debuts in school history by winning the MAC title in the 1,500m and finishing second indoors and fifth outdoors in the 800m and seventh in the mile. Powers was another top MAC performer for the Broncos with a second place finish in the mile, third in the 1,500m and seventh in the outdoor 800m. Powers and Odom also were part of the Broncos’ distance medley relay that finished third at the MAC Indoor Championships. Roberts is also poised to have a breakout season at the middle distances. Horn could also be a factor as she ran the 800m only a couple of times last season, but has the second fastest time ever in the event indoors (2:09.59) in her first time running the event in competition. Also returning for the outdoor season will be senior Rachael Lowe, the school record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase. Lowe finished second in the MAC in the event in 2005, along with a seventh place finish in the 1,500m. Seniors Blake and Kelel lead the Broncos in the distance events.

Throws The throws are an area of this well-balanced team which have gone through vast improvements in just the past two years. WMU has gone from being almost non-existent in the throws to being arguably the best squad in the MAC. Senior Kristalyn Mauch is the catalyst of this amazing transformation. Mauch has improved her shot put PR by nearly ten feet and has captured the school record and qualified for the NCAA Regionals. To go along with Mauch, the Broncos brought in another bomber, freshman Irene Cooper, who could also climb to the top of the conference. In the discus, junior Kari Richards joined Mauch at the NCAA Regionals last season and also scored in the MAC. Richards has her sights set on the school record in the discus this season. Mauch and newcomers Linsay Bloor, Christine Brinkman and Cooper will also add firepower to the disc. Jessica Stender, Sara Sickels and Hillary Weyenberg are also developing rapidly and look to follow Mauch’s path to the scoring column. In the hammer and weight throw, Mauch, Cooper and Richards will show off their fine athleticism and versatility as all three could score points in the MAC.

Multi Erskine returns as one of the top heptathletes in the MAC. Last season, she finished second at the Penn Relays and her best score of 4,857 points ranks fourth all-time at WMU. Joining Erskine in the “two-day treat” will be Danielle Brown, Alexis Brown and Mathewson.

SHAYNA SANGSTERHurdles-Sprints • Sr.

Lansing, Mich. • Sexton The Broncos’ third-leading point scorer last season, Shayna Sangster was voted co-captain of the Broncos during both her sophomore and junior seasons, a rare accomplishment which speaks volumes about her leadership qualities. A top scoring sprinter during her first two seasons for the Brown & Gold, Sangster experimented with a new event during her junior season, the hurdles, and the experiment was a rousing success. Along with setting a new school record in the 200m indoors (her

old event), she also had the Broncos’ top time in the 100m hurdles (14.08) and 400m hurdles (59.10), her new events. And one event Sangster is always involved in is the 4x400. Sangster turned in a scintillaing split of 52.9 as she anchored the WMU foursome to an all-time MAC record of 3:34.78. Sangster also qualified for the 2006 NCAA Championships individually in the 400 hurdles and she finished in

the top 20 nationally in her first appearance in the “Big Dance.” Sangster is a staple on WMU relays and owns school records on the 4x100, 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relays. As Kelly Lycan begins his sixth year as the head coach of the Western Michigan University women’s cross country and track and field teams, the word most often used to describe his program is success.

After being named the Broncos’ fifth cross country/track and field coach on August 2, 2001, the Broncos have made startling improvements. Last season, WMU achieved its highest finish ever at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships by placing third.

For a second straight year, the Broncos’ vaunted 4x400 relay team set a new school and

MAC record at the NCAA Mideast Regional with a time of 3:34.78. The quartet of Becky Horn, Sheriese Lucas, Joy Eloms and Shayna Sangster then advanced to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., where they finished in the top 20 to give Western Michigan its third top 20 finish in that event in the last four years. Sangster also competed in the national championships by placing 20th in the 400 meter hurdles.

For a second straight summer, WMU also sent two athletes (Danielle Brown, Jennier Sabra) to the USA Junior Nationals.

In 2005, the Broncos finished fourth at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the program’s highest finish in 18 years. Prior to his arrival, the Broncos finished 164 points out of first place at the MAC Championships. Just two years later, Lycan, 47, led the Broncos to the very brink of the championship, finishing a mere 16 points from a MAC title.

The 2005 season saw Lycan send six individuals and a relay to the NCAA Mideast Regional in Bloomington, Ind., as the 4x400 squad qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second time in three years. The mile relay claimed dual MAC titles, winning indoors and outdoors while setting MAC records both indoors and outdoors. WMU also produced its first-ever heptathlon champion (Katie Pickette) and sent a pair of athletes (Becky Horn, Kari Richards) to the USA Junior Nationals.

In 2004, Lycan advanced seven athletes to the NCAA Mideast Regional in Baton Rouge, La. His expertise in the quarter mile events was evident as a WMU athlete won the MAC 400 meter title for the fourth time in six outings while the 4x400 relay qualified for its second straight NCAA Regional.

The Broncos’ cross country squad had one of the best seasons in school history in 2006 by winning three straight races to claim the first three-win season at WMU since 2002. Jill Odom won the George Dales Invitational to give the Broncos their first meet winner since 2004.

During the 2005 cross country season, the Broncos finished sixth at the MAC Championships with Odom earning all-MAC recognition as a freshman.

In 2004, Lycan coached a pair of All-MAC cross country performers in Meryl Marsh and Rachael Lowe, the first Broncos to earn such honors in 10 years. He also led WMU to first place finishes at the Valparaiso Invitational and George Dales Invitational. In all, Lycan’s squads have collected six cross country titles in five seasons. In 2001, WMU defeated Notre Dame in a home dual meet.

Lycan’s 23-year collegiate coaching career has featured many highlights:

• Coached an NCAA Champion in the 200m, LaTasha Jenkins, while he was an assistant at Ball State. Jenkins’ time of 22.29 is an American collegiate record.

• Has coached 10 All-Americans and 53 MAC champions

• Worked with five athletes who garnered either most valuable performer or most outstanding performance honors at MAC Championships

• Produced MAC Champions in the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 100 HH, 400m H, long jump, triple jump, shot put, heptathlon, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay

• Qualified the Bronco 4x400 relay for the 2003, 2005 and 2006 NCAA Outdoor meets and Shayna Sangster in the 400 hurdles in 2006 and Devron Kennedy in 2003. The 2003 quartet finished 13th nationally.

• Mentored Arkansas’ Cynthia Moore, who finished second in the triple jump at the 1990 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Lycan has coached 11 individual MAC champions and five first-place relay squads in his five years at WMU, ending a school drought of MAC champions which had stretched back to 1997.

The 2003 indoor and outdoor seasons were highlighted by 23 school records. Lycan put together the fastest 4x400 in the state of Michigan, a group that won the MAC Championship and qualified for the NCAAs — becoming the first WMU relay to qualify for the national meet. Another first for the Bronco program was the crowning of WMU’s first-ever female Drake Relays Champion in Sarah Hinkley (10,000 meters).

Before arriving at WMU, Lycan spent seven years (1993-00) as the top assistant at Ball State University. During those years the Cardinals won a total of seven indoor and outdoor MAC Championships, where he tutored 41 individual MAC Champions.

Lycan has also experienced great success at the elite level, having coached former Ball State star LaTasha Jenkins to an NCAA Championship in the 200m in 1999. Her time of 22.29 is still the American collegiate record, making her the fastest American college woman ever. Lycan also coached Jenkins in 2000, when she teamed up with Marion Jones to set a world record in the 4x200m relay and later qualified for the finals of the 200m at the 2000 Olympic Trials

Lycan began his coaching career at the University of Arkansas (1983-90) where he helped take the Lady Razorbacks from the bottom of the Southwest Conference to a team ranked by Track and Field News as one of the top-20 in the nation.

Lycan spent time as the men’s assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State (1993-94) and was an assistant at Eastern Michigan (1992-93).

A native of Wooster, Ohio, Lycan received a bachelor of fine arts degree in creative writing from Bowling Green in 1981, while lettering in football and track. He still ranks third in kickoff return average, averaging 25.9 yards during the 1981 season. Lycan went on to earn his master’s in creative writing from Arkansas in 1990. Still an active competitor, Lycan finished third in the 100m hurdles for athletes ages 45-49 at the U.S. National Master’s meet in 2006, and also finished second at the 2005 U.S. National Master’s Decathlon championships.

Kelly and his wife Nicole are the parents of two children, a daughter, Clare (8) and a son, Grady (6).

In her fifth year as the Broncos’ full-time assistant, Becki Bishop has already revitalized WMU’s distance program. As the distance coach, she handles the cross country squad and the distance events on the track.

In cross country, WMU won three races in 2006 for the first time since 2002 when they took the Bronco Invitational, Michigan Intercollegiates and George Dales Invitational in back-to-back-to-back competitions. Sophomore Jill Odom won the George Dales Invitational to become the first meet winner since 2004.

During the 2005 cross country season, Bishop coached freshman Jill Odom to Second Team All-MAC honors, while freshman Jennifer

Roberts was one-place short of also earning All-MAC accolades.

Bishop coached Meryl Marsh and Rachael Lowe to Top-10 finishes and All-MAC honors at the 2004 MAC Championships — the first such school honors since 1994. Bishop also helped school-record holder Rachael Lowe qualify for the 2005 NCAA Regional in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Last season, Bishop worked with Odom as she won a MAC championship in the 1,500 meters, the first victory for the Broncos in that event since 1981 and qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship.

Two years ago, Bishop worked with a pair of strong 800 meter runners in Victoria Bassett and Janaule Bennett, both of whom qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in Baton Rouge, La. In 2003, Bishop helped guide sophomore Sarah Hinkley to the 10,000 meter championship at the prestigious Drake Relays, accomplishing in just one year what no Bronco women’s distance coach had ever done before –– coach a Drake Relays Champion.

During the 2003 cross country campaign, she led the Broncos to their first top 10 ranking in the Great Lakes Regional Poll, arguably one of the toughest regions in the country. Bishop also coached the Bronco harriers to their best finish at the MAC Championship since 1995.

Bishop came to WMU after serving as the head coach at Bangor High School in Bangor, Mich. She guided both the the cross country and the track and field teams to a Red Arrow Conference Championship. For her efforts, she was named Coach of the Year during the spring. Prior to that, Bishop was the head cross country/track and field coach at St. Monica Elementary School in Kalamazoo working primarily with the seventh and eighth grade students.

A 1998 graduate of Ball State University, Bishop lettered in both cross country and track for the Cardinals, and was part of two record-setting relays at BSU (distance medley relay, 4x800m).

Bishop earned her master’s degree in pedagogy with an emphasis on physical education from Western Michigan in 2001 finishing with a 3.96 overall GPA.

She and husband Chris have one son, Carter.

Bill Griffey is beginning his third season as throws coach for the Broncos.

During his time in Kalamazoo, Griffey has turned the Broncos’ throws program into one of the most competitive in the MAC. Griffey has helped Kristalyn Mauch increase her personal record in the shot put from 40-2.25 to 49-7 and helped increase Kari Richards’ PR in the discus from 138-4 in high school to 155-4. Under Griffey’s tutelage, Richards qualified for the USATF Junior Nationals in Carson, Calif., in 2005 and the NCAA Mideast Regionals in 2006 with Mauch.

Griffey’s previous coaching experience includes seven years (1998-04) at his alma mater, Hopkins High School. As the head coach at Hopkins, Griffey developed 12 conference champions, four regional titlists, nine state qualifiers, two state champions, a state record holder and two junior national meet qualifiers. Under his direction, Hopkins’ student-athletes broke 14 school records in the throws, helping the program rise to the upper echelon of the OK Silver Conference. Among his pupils was current WMU standout Katie Pickette. In addition, Griffey was a football assistant on the 2002 Division 6 state runner-up team.

Griffey, 27, actively competes and holds the shot put and discus records for the West Shore Athletic Club. He remains an avid powerlifter.

A native of Hopkins, Mich., Griffey received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from WMU in 2004. He and his wife Cori live in Kalamazoo with their son, Michael.

One of the region’s most respected pole vault instructors, Wes Teeple is in his fourth season with the Broncos.

Last season, he coached his daughter, Stephanie, to an appearance at the NCAA Mideast Regional.

In 2005, he helped all three Bronco pole vaulters (Stephanie Teeple, Stacy Orosz, Emily Browning) break the school outdoor record and helped Orosz break the indoor school record.

Teeple brings more than 25 years of coaching experience at the high school level. He served as field events coach at Sturgis High School from 1990-03 after spending eight years at Centreville High School. In all, Teeple has coached five state champions, 28 state qualifiers, 10 all-state finishers and a pair of runner-ups.

Teeple, 49, has worked with two prep All-Americans, a state record holder and a U.S. Junior National participant. He served as pole vault coach with the U.S. Junior National Team in 2000.

A Detroit native, Teeple capped a stellar four-year career at Eastern Michigan (1974-78) with an appearance at the 1978 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He set the EMU pole vault record and captured two Central Collegiate Conference championships. Teeple graduated from EMU with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1978.

Wes and his wife, Cheryl, have a daughter, Stephanie, who competed for the Broncos and a son, Brad, who competed at Nebraska and Alabama.

Caroline Mullen came to WMU in 1986 after Lamar dropped track. She is one of only two MAC harriers (man or woman) to win three individual titles. In 1986, she earned All-America honors by finishing third at the NCAA Championships. A native of South Westmeath, Ireland, Mullen also competed in track, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters at the 1987 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Mullen was inducted into the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

One of the finest cross country runners in school history, Maggie Lillie-Smith twice earned All-MAC honors. She won the MAC in 1984 and was runner-up in 1986 to teammate Caroline Mullen. Lillie-Smith was a member of three consecutive MAC championship teams (1984-86). She ran the fastest 5,000 meters in WMU history in 1984 (16:49) and holds the Arcadia record (17:05) - considered one of the most challenging courses in the MAC when it was WMU’s home in the 1980s.

READ FIELDHOUSEINDOOR TRACK

Home to the Broncos from 1978 to 1990, Read Fieldhouse was closed for renovations during the 1993-94 seasons. Upon comple-tion, it was determined large-scale meets were no longer possible to host. WMU began a new era last winter by beginning a series of yearly duals, bringing track back to Read Fieldhouse.

KANLEY TRACK & FIELD COMPLEXOUTDOOR TRACK

The Kanley Track & Field Complex serves as the outdoor home to the Broncos. It features a 400-meter Olympic model Martin-sur-face track, the Alumni Track Building and permanent lights. The field features a completely contained events competition area and excellent viewing for spectators. The complex underwent a mas-sive renovation project in 1993 and hosted the MAC Champion-ships in 1995.

PINE VIEW GOLF CLUBCROSS COUNTRY

Pine View, located in Three Rivers, has been home to the Broncos since 1997. The six-kilometer course caters to fast times due to its relatively flat layout. Pine View hosted the MAC Championships in 2000.

Kay Barstow became the first Bronco to earn All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the high jump at the 1979 AIAW Championships. Barstow still holds the WMU indoor high jump mark that she set in 1979 and is third on the outdoor list with a jump of 5-8.

Phyllis Brooks became the fifth WMU All-American when she finished 11th in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She was named the MAC Athlete of the Meet at the 1997 in-door and outdoor championships. Brooks holds in-door marks in the 55-meter hurdles, 200-meter hur-dles, long jump, pentathlon and sprint medley relay. Outdoors, she is first in the 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, long jump and heptathlon.

Caroline Mullen was the second runner to earn All-America status in both cross country and track. In 1986 Mullen finished third at the NCAA Cross Coun-try Championships and fourth in the 5,000 at the 1987 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She still holds Bron-co indoor records in the 3,000 and in the two mile. Her outdoor marks in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 set in 1987 still remain atop the WMU record book. Mullen was elected to the WMU Hall of Fame in 2000.

Jamie Strieter captured All-America honors in the javelin with a throw of 160-3 at the 1998 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She finished her collegiate career as WMU’s record holder in the javelin. Stri-eter ranks third all-time on WMU’s shot put list. She placed second in the javelin at the 1998 Drake Relays and was second in the javelin and shot put at the 1998 MAC Outdoor Championships. Strieter scored 3,358 points to place third in the pentathlon at the 1998 MAC Indoor Championships. She was also a standout in the classroom, earning GTE All-American Second Team honors and U.S. Track Coaches Assocciation All-Academic accolades. Strieter was a five-time Aca-demic All-MAC First Team selection.

In 1993, Jill Stamison became the fourth Bronco to earn All-America honors. Stamison was third in the 800 meters at the 1993 NCAA Indoor Championships and fourth in the same event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She finished third in the 800 at the 1997 USATF Championships and competed in the 1997 World Championships. Stamison still holds the WMU indoor record in the 800 and was a member of a record-setting 4x800 relay team. Her time in the 800 at the 1993 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the top mark in WMU history.

Kayla Skelly became the first cross country runner at WMU to achieve All-America status by finishing 28th at the 1985 NCAA Championships with a time of 17:02. She twice won the MAC individual title (1985, 1983) and is one of only two Bronco harriers to earn All-MAC status four consecutive years. In track, Skel-ly captured seven MAC crowns — three in the 3,000 (1985, 1984, 1983), two in the 5,000 (1985, 1983) and two in the 10,000 (1986, 1984). Skelly was honored as the “W” Club’s Woman of the Year in 1994.
