About the Cross Island YMCA

The Cross Island Y got its start 60 years ago, when the community

came together to help solve the issue of rapid youth crimes. Local

business owners and service organizations advocated for the

expansion of YMCA programs as a means of combatting teen

violence. At that time, the Central Queens branch agreed to assist,

and the Eastern Queens branch opened in a donated storefront on

Hempstead Avenue in Queens Village. It had limited professional

staff and a lot of help from local churches and schools.

The shoestring operation was instantly successful -- so much so that

plans for a building emerged not long after. The Y building wasn’t

opened, however, until 1965. Located at 238-10 Hillside Avenue,

in the Bellerose neighborhood, the new branch was located on land

purchased from the State of New York. Despite its new building, Eastern

Queens retained its status as an extension of Central Queens until 1974.

In 1979, the YMCA once again acquired state land adjacent to the

building when Jack Kleinoder, a longtime supporter of the Eastern

Queens branch, made the purchase on behalf of the YMCA. 8 years

later, 1987 the addition to was added to the building, and named

after the branch’s benefactor Jack Kleinoder.

The addition allowed the branch to strengthen its focus on accessibility,

which included nationally recognized swimming and other programs

for disabled children and adults. In 1989, the branch name officially

changed to the Cross Island Y and in 1991 was designated an aquatic

training center for the Special Olympics.

Event HonoreeJean Dattner Cross Island YMCA, Special Populations Recipient of the Lisa Beth Gerstman Community Service Award 2017

Jean Dattner is originally from Brooklyn, NY, she majored in Physical Education but knewearly in her career that her strength was in Aquatics. She spent 8 years as a Physical Education teacher in the Bedford Stuyvesant and Great Neck Community. It was over the Christmas Holidays of 1961 when Jean met her husband, Eric Dattner, a qualified Mechanical Engineer, and 6 months later in June 1962 they got married. Immediately they connected with their common love for skiing, one that they still share today with their 2 sons and 3 grandkids.

In 1972, Jean began teaching Synchronized Swimming at the Cross Island Y. There she met Ronnie Arond, who became Jean’s assistant then took over the program. A year later Jean branched into the Gym/ Swim Department as the Program Coordinator, then Senior Program Director of Gym/ Swim, Aquatics and Special Population Programs.

In 1978, the Special Populations program was introduced at Cross Island Y to meet a need in the community. The Veterans from St. Albans Naval Hospital were the first group. In the beginning the focus was on aquatic programming. Jean taught Instructional Swim Classes, Arthritis Water Exercise and Water Exercise for Adults with Disabilities. Today the program has been enhanced to include various athletic and cardio group exercise activities. In 1980’s the Cross Island Y was one of the first recipients of the JC Penney Award for Programming for Special Populations. About 20 years ago the Special Olympics Program was formed, they have been competing locally, regionally and at state events and won many Gold Medals. The first Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation Inclusion Day Camp program was launched in 2003 at the Cross Island YMCA. In developing this special camp, Jean Dattner realized a lifelong dream to serve an underserved population in the community, and has continued to provide her vision and leadership to the camp.

The Cross Island Y can proudly state that with Jean Dattner’s guidance we now serve over 200 Special Needs Participants, 40 Lisa Beth Gerstman and Inclusion Campers, 50 Athletes in Special Olympics and 12 Special Needs Agencies and welcome all people with disabilities.

Event Honoree Franck D. Joseph II Managing Director, NYC Commission on Human Rights Franck D. Joseph II is a community advocate, public speaker, and ChristianMinister residing in New York City. Known not only for his leadership, but also for his training and the development of others, he continues to exemplify a life of service which extends beyond himself.

Franck D. Joseph II was inspired to dedicate his life to public service due to his own hardships growing up. Losing his father at an early age and being raised by a single mother shaped a lot of his views as he saw the struggles she went through to make ends meet. These circumstances caused Franck to grow up quickly and mature into the person he is today.

Franck has held several high level positions throughout government. One of which was Chief of Staff to Council Member Donovan Richards, where he helped bring many resources into the district. The manifestation of his advocacy work became increasingly evident in March of 2016 when Franck joined Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration as the Queens Director for New York City’s Commission on Human Rights. In February of 2017 he was tapped to become a Managing Director at the Commission where he oversees the citywide community relations staff for the agency. He is upholding the city’s civil rights and liberties, while combatting discriminatory practices.

Franck also has the opportunity to conduct leadership training workshops for universities, houses of worship, non-profit organizations, and small businesses; as well as be a Keynote Speaker for several events and occasions. He currently is also an Adjunct Social Justice Instructor.

The Lisa Beth Gerstman Community Service Award 2017This award acknowledges the commitment of its benefactor Dan Gerstman and the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation. Dan is a former member of the Cross Island Y Board of Managers from 2003-2010 and was Chairman in 2006. Dan along with his family are Co-Founders of the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation which affords children with special needs the opportunity to attend summer day and sleep-away camps in integrated settings.

The first Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation camp program was launched in 2003 at the Cross Island YMCA and is a continual success each year. With inspiration from the Cross Island Y, the foundation has expanded to over 20 camp locations throughout the Metropolitan area. The Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation believes that every child deserves the opportunity to participate in a safe, caring, and fun learning environment.

In 2005, both Marie, Antoinette and 40 Correction Officers went out during super storm Sandy to Far Rockaway YMCA Offsite and donated clothes, toys, hats, gloves and food to children and families in need during the Christmas season. Every year since 2007, Marie and Antoinette have raised over $10,000 as Cross Island YMCA Volunteers by running an annual YMCA Walk-a-Thon.

Marie Slaughter has received many awards, numerous letters of appreciation and certificates from the YMCA and from various community activists and political leaders.

Antoinette Slaughter has been a part of the Cross Island Y since the tender age of 6 months, learningto swim in our Gym/Swim Program. Then enrolled in our Early Childhood program at age 2 and later joined the Afterschool program at 5 years old. Along with her mother Marie Slaughter, Antoinette has been an active volunteer of the Cross Island YMCA since 2007, at the age of 3 she participated in her first Walk-a-Thon. Antoinette and her mom have actively helped to run our Annual Walk-a-thons for our After School and Early Childhood Programs, supported our Swim for Nicolas Holt Memorial Swim and Cruise for a Cause Fundraisers.

Antoinette has been a great advocate of our Annual Campaign, which provides Financial Aid support to those in need. She has participated and raised funds in our Annual Kids Triathlon and Turkey Trot events since 2014. She also recruited her friends, totaling 10 families to join her on the Cruise for a Cause fundraiser which helped to raise over $3,500 for that event alone. Together, Marie and Antoinette have raised over $10,000 by talking with fellow members, family and friends.

The YMCA offers programs for individuals of all backgrounds and ages, the money that Antoinette and her mom raises truly helps the community! In 2015, Antoinette, entered her first Flushing Meadows Soap Box Derby. Both mom and daughter received awards for their teamwork, enthusiasm and dedication towards helping others. These days you will find Antoinette in the YMCA Afterschool helping her peers during homework help time and she even helps to teach younger classmates how to tie their shoes. The Y looks forward to her continued community work and fundraising support from Antoinette for years to come.

The YMCA of Greater New York is an important part of the fabric of life in our great City. The members of our Heritage Society are a select group of individuals who are conveying their values and hope for future generations through a planned gift to the Y.

The YMCA’s characteristically friendly, accepting environment makes it a place where people of widely different ages, races, ethnicities and incomes choose to be together. As a center of community life, the Y is a social catalyst that transforms residents into neighbors, strangers into friends and, block by block, a sometimes impersonal city into a constellation of livable communities. Among the communities we are most proud to have developed, is our group of extraordinarily generous friends who have included the YMCA of Greater New York in their legacy planning.

The Heritage Society recognizes this special community of thoughtful donors who have chosen the YMCA of Greater New York to receive support through one of several planned gift instruments including a Will Bequest, Living Trust, Insurance Policy, Charitable Gift Annuity, and/or Lead Trust. These planned gift instruments all afford the donor potential tax and estate plan benefits.

While our planned giving staff team is happy to review options with you and prepare material for your review, we encourage you to consult your personal tax or financial advisor to determine which options are best for you. For more information contact Gary Laermer at 212-630-9629 or [email protected].

Executive Director Letter

Welcome to the Cross Island YMCA 60th Anniversary & Community Awards Gala & Auction. Tonight we are proud to honor eight exceptional individuals: Hank & Ronnie Arond, Jean Dattner, Franck D. Joseph II, Brian Leung, Christopher Roker, Marie & Antoinette Slaughter, all of whom have demonstrated their commitment to the Cross Island YMCA and the communities of eastern Queens.

Our celebration, which benefits the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign, comes at an exhilarating time. We celebrate 60 years and our programs and membership at the Cross Island YMCA have never been stronger. We are fortunate to have the leadership of a talented Board of Managers as well as a staff team committed to delivering excellence in both programs and customer service.

I am proud to note the following accomplishments:

Over 36,000 individuals participated in programs this year, and of them, 13,000 are youth ages 18 and under.

The Lisa Beth Gerstman Day Camp for children with special needs just finished its 14th year, integrated fully into our larger summer day camp program which serves over 800 children each summer.

Over $274,000 was pledged to support our Annual Campaign, which supports scholarships for low income families and youth programs.

As we look to the future, our goals include partnering with community leaders and organizations to reach more youth with YMCA programs, building spirit, mind and body, and positively impacting the community as a whole.

Thank you for being here tonight to honor our past 60 years along with our honorees and for supporting the future success of the Cross Island YMCA.

In the early morning hours you will see a beautiful sight of 94 year old Florence Kirmayer being escorted by her son into the Cross Island YMCA. As a member for 33 years, she follows her routine of swimming in the JK pool.

Florence has set the fun pace of fitness and friendship. And that’s why the Y is such a special place.

The leaders and the staff have made Cross Island Y a place where fitness is not the only goal. It offers a welcoming and caring atmosphere.

Happy 60th AnniversaryAgnes (Aggie) Casottana

Jason Harris has fond memories of swimming, painting, learning and playing with his twin and friends at the Cross Island YMCA. After graduating from Seton Hall University as a Fine Arts major, Jason’s passion turned from art to yoga. He began teaching yoga classes at the Y in 2012. He continues to enjoy the YMCA community.

As a member since 1981, I was a swimmer but due to family & work responsibilities had gotten rusty. Returnning in the 90’s I had the good fortune of meeting up with Debbie Lahav, lifeguard. I introduced myself and the rest is history. The confidence and abilities that were absent, suddenly were a thing of the past. As a tribute to Debbie, she personifies these excerpts from an author Robert Muller:

“Decide to be happy. Render others happy. Proclaim your joy. Love passionately your miraculous life. Do not listen to promises. Do not wait for a better world. Be grateful for every moment of life. Switch on and keep on the positive buttons in yourself, those marked optimism, serenity, confidence, positive thinking, love… “Smile, laugh, whistle, sing, dance, look with fascination at everything…”

I am grateful always for Debbie, as an outstanding employee and lifeguard of the Cross Island YMCA. – Agnes Casottana
