INTRODUCTION
Another cross pendant design from XQ Design. This time round I am using chain maille techniques. To be specific, the design is based on full Persian weave. The
weave is applied commonly in bracelet and necklace.
This tutorial will show you with detailed pictorial step by step guides. Step 1 to step 9 will show you the basic of making full persian weave and the subsequent steps will
show you how to make the cross. The cross is using stainless steel rings with diameter of 8cm. For beginner, I would suggest that you practice the weave using
bigger rings. This is one of the harder weaves to understand at first, but it gets easier.
MATERIALS AND TOOLS NEEDED:
Materials Needed 70 stainless steel rings 0.8cm in diameter 8 small wooden beads with large holes
Tools Needed Round nose pliers Flat nose pliers Wire cutter
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1:
Making chain maille can be a lot of fun, and with some practice and patience it is a skill that can be added to any jewelry-making arsenal. The fundamental point to master in order to create perfect jewelry every time is opening and closing jump rings in a way that forms seamless connections. Use your round nose and chain or flat nose pliers to grip the jump ring on both sides of the split. Now move one plier towards you and the other away from you, in other
words move your hands in opposite directions (forwards and backwards). Don’t pull it open from left to right, otherwise the round shape of the jump ring will be distorted. Similarly, for closing a jump ring, use the 2 pliers to pull them the centre to close the gap.
Step 2:
Learn the basic of Full Persian weave For the first 9 steps, I will go thru the basic of full Persian weave using 2 colors of rings: silver and gold so that you will able to follow the steps. First, start with 1 opened ring.
Place 2 closed gold ring onto the silver ring.
Close the silver ring when done.
Place in another silver ring through the 2 gold rings as shown in the picture and close it.
Step 3:
Hold both ends with 2 strings or twist ties.
Step 4:
Hold both twist tie with your left hand.
Step 5:
Now open up the gold rings in a vee
Step 6:
Add 2 more rings thru the two silver rings within the vee. The picture show 1 gold ring added.
This picture shows the second ring added within the vee.
Step 7:
With a pre-opened silver ring, hook it through the first pair of the gold rings from the side.
And then through the second pair of gold rings.
Close the ring.
Chain in another silver ring as per step 6.
Step 8:
This is how it would look like. Open the gold rings in vee.
Repeat step 5 by putting in 2 gold rings within the vee.
Step 9:
Repeat step 6 to pass through two silver rings thru the gold rings.
This is how the weave will look like. This picture shows the side with the gold rings.
This picture shows the side with the silver rings.
If you continue the weave, you can make a bracelet or necklace out of it.
Step 10:
Now that you have learn the basic of full Persian weave. Let’s learn how to make a cross pendant. Use rings of 8cm in diameter, make 1 chain using the full Persian technique for approximately 4.5cm long.
Step 11:
At the end of the chain, open the 2 rings with your flat nose pliers.
Slip in a wooden bead thru the open ring.
Close the ring.
This is how it look like once you close the ring.
Repeat the same for the other ring by placing a wooden bead and close the ring.
Put in 2 beads at the other end of the chain.
Step 12:
Do up two more chains measuring about 2.5cm each. For each chain, put in 2 beads at the end of the chain.
Step 13: When you put the 3 chains together, you will see a cross.
To chain them all up, take chain 1 and open 1 ring at the end.
Hook the open ring to chain 2 at the place you would like to form a cross.
Hook the second opened ring to chain 2 as well.
This is how it look like when the 2 rings are attached to chain 2.
Repeat the same for chain 3 by attaching the two rings at the end onto chain 2.
Step 14:
You have completed the cross pendant. Hope you like it!
