CROSSROADS of YOU

WHEN YOU COME TO BUTLER, you’re getting more than just a world-class education. You’re joining the vibrant community of Indianapolis (Indy)—the 14th-largest city in the U.S., and the perfect backdrop for hands-on learning.

Nicknamed the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis is a city of learners and doers. And Butler University plays a huge role in the life of the city. We partner with local businesses large and small, so you’ll have incredible opportunities to explore your future career. And our strong relationship with the community gives students plenty of chances for service-learning and volunteering. You’ll also discover museums filled with priceless art, exhilarating professional sports, and other experiences that will enrich your education and expand your worldview.

Whether you’re volunteering with a local charity, gaining valuable experience in the business world, or helping shape young minds in local schools, at Butler, your experiences will shape your life for the next four years and beyond.

ANDREW GELWICKS ’16 has loved magazines ever since he was a child stealing his mom’s Vanity Fair to admire its glossy pages full of glamorous people. His interests in writing, fashion, and photography, along with his experience at Butler as a Strategic Communication major, all helped him land a summer internship with Hearst Magazines in New York City.

Whatever you’re interested in, there’s no teacher like experience. That’s why we stress the importance of internships and hands-on learning. In fact, more than 75% of Butler students complete one or more internships for academic credit, and all business students complete two. That way, when you find your dream job, you’ll have the valuable experience—inside the classroom and out in the field—that employers desire most in a job candidate.

INTERNSHIP AND

CAREER SERVICES

From career advising to networking events, Butler has many resources to help you find the internship or full-time job that’s right for you. Last year, over 250 employers and organizations attended on-campus job fairs or interviews to recruit students for promising careers. If you’re ever wondering how to get started on your job search, the Internship and Career Services Office will help set you on the right path.

EVERY AUGUST, as the sun rises over Indy, so do hundreds of first-year Butler students who encircle the city as part of our annual Bulldogs Into the Streets program. It’s our voluntary day-long service event for new students to learn about themselves and others as they make a meaningful impact on the community. Volunteering is just the beginning of community engagement at Butler. The Indianapolis Community Requirement, which combines academic learning with relevant community service, is also a part of every Butler student’s education.

Through the Indianapolis Community Requirement, all students take at least one course that involves active engagement with the Indianapolis community—which inspires many to continue their community involvement throughout their time at Butler. Why? Because these experiences help students better understand themselves and their world, discern what gives their lives meaning, discover new skills they never imagined before, and forge connections with people on campus and in the city they’ll call home these next few years.

At other schools, this might be a lot to expect, but that’s just what Bulldogs do.

EVERY BUTLER STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN MEANINGFUL, COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

WHEN BUTLER STUDENT RACHAEL

ESSIG WALKED OUT onto the stage to present her paper on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, she wasn’t nervous. She had the experience she needed—extensively researching, preparing an abstract, and synthesizing her findings into a spot-on presentation at the Butler Undergraduate Research Conference. Now it was time to share her results with the world.

Whatever your major, you’ll have many opportunities to conduct real research in your field, just as Rachael did. Astronomy majors peer into space from our own Holcomb Observatory and from telescopes in Chile and the Canary Islands. Psychology students present their research alongside professors at national conferences in Washington, DC, and some students travel all the way to Panama to study tropical marine biology with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Never stop asking questions, because at Butler, you’ll be able to explore whatever fascinates you.

What will you discover?

BUTLER UNDERGRADUATE

RESEARCH CONFERENCE

This annual research conference invites students from universities across the country to present research in many academic disciplines, ranging from art history to exercise science. It’s your chance to gain hands-on experience and mentorship from faculty, while diving deep into thought-provoking issues.

AT BUTLER, WE BELIEVE IN A

TRULY GLOBAL EDUCATION. It starts on campus, with courses designed to provide you with broad cultural context and historical understanding. But that’s just the beginning. We encourage you to get out of the classroom, off campus, and even out of the country—because education doesn’t stop at Butler’s borders.

Check out all of the opportunities you have for global learning at Butler. Take advantage of them. The lessons you learn from venturing beyond the familiar can’t be taught in a classroom alone, and they’re lessons you’ll never forget.

Visit butler.edu/global-education to find your perfect destination.

STUDY ABROAD

Butler has over 110 study abroad and exchange programs in more than 70 countries. Some programs focus on a certain academic area, while others can be tailored to your own interests. Choose to study for a summer term, a semester, or a full academic year.

OUR CLASSROOMS REQUIRE PASSPORTS

GLOBAL ADVENTURES IN

THE LIBERAL ARTS (GALA)

Do you want to study abroad in more than one place? The GALA program might be perfect for you. GALA is a semester-long adventure across an entire global region, led by a Butler faculty member. You’ll also have guest professors join your group along the way to teach short classes related to whatever locale you’re in. It’s your chance to experience the global classroom, all while satisfying Core Curriculum requirements. WASHINGTON, DC

LEARNING PROGRAM

You don’t have to leave the country to expand your horizons. Spend a semester with students from other universities who are living, learning, and working in the nation’s capital as part of the Washington, DC Learning Program. You’ll earn Butler credits by taking classes in foreign policy and the history of Washington, DC and complete an internship targeted to your interests.

IF YOU DRIVE AROUND INDY on any given day, there’s a good chance you’ll pass buildings full of Bulldogs hard at work—like Butler alumnus Donald Perin ’15, who completed a six-month internship with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Donald helped the symphony bring music and color to the community, gained valuable knowledge on the workings of Indiana’s largest arts organization, and developed skills in communications and public relations.

In Indianapolis, you’ll be challenged to put your education into practice, create a network, and gain valuable career experience to prepare you for the road ahead. You’ll have opportunities with a wide range of organizations based on your individual interests. Students have made an impact on children’s lives in our community’s classrooms, completed sociology research on homelessness in the city, and gained experience interning with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis Colts. And that’s just the beginning.

Whatever your dream career, Indianapolis is full of ways to help you bring it to life.

MARLOSCOTT ’93The lessons Marlo learned in Butler’s College of Business eventually led her to opening Sweet Revenge, her own artisan cupcake, beer, and wine bar in New York City’s West Village.

“I took business communication courses and managerial courses, and I really do feel that those courses laid a good foundation,” she said. “Butler taught me how to be resourceful and gave me my first exposure to networking. What I learned from my professors is that you have to reach out to the network that Butler provides.”

A L U M N I S TO R I E S

Marlo is also using her experience to help other budding entrepreneurs. She teaches six classes a year in subject areas such as how to write a business plan, do-it-yourself marketing and PR, how to open a restaurant, how to open a bakery, and social media.

“I never sugarcoat this stuff,” Marlo said. “It’s not for everybody and it’s not easy, and it’s not always sweet. But it’s certainly rewarding, and the potential is amazing. I really have been so lucky to do this, and I’m happy I can share it with folks who share a passion for pursuing their own dream.”

WARREN MORGAN ’06Warren had many life-changing experiences at Butler, two of which most people only dream of. While serving as President of the Student Government Association, Warren met two speakers on campus—former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush—who each encouraged him to consider a career in government policy. “To hear this from two United States presidents,” he said, “it really changed my trajectory.”

This advice propelled Warren to achieve great things. After graduation, he worked on education policy for the Illinois Senate, taught for two years with Teach for America,

and earned his master’s degree in leadership. Warren rose through the ranks from teacher to principal in Chicago, and eventually became an academic superintendent in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

It was his experiences at Butler that helped Warren realize the importance of investing in children’s education. He says that when he gets together with friends, “We always talk about how Butler helped us formulate our thoughts. Butler shaped our beliefs in some ways and influenced us to be the leaders we were destined to be.”
