Welcome

Dear Crosswind Families, On behalf of the Crosswind staff and PTA, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our returning and new students and their families. We are very excited about our upcoming new school year, and we encourage our parents to support the education of their children by joining the PTA and volunteering their time and talent at Crosswind Elementary School. The faculty and staff of Crosswind Elementary are committed to serving its students and parents. This booklet contains important information about our school. Please refer to this handbook throughout the year as needed. If you have questions not addressed in this handbook, any CWES staff will be happy to assist you. Please read this informative information about district policies and our school’s programs, policies, and procedures. Refer to it often when questions arise. The calendar portion is to let you know when events/activities will occur during the school year. I am looking forward to working with all our parents, students and community to help make this another successful year at Crosswind! Dr. Andre Crafford, Principal Crosswind Elementary School

ATTENDANCE The Tennessee State Compulsory Attendance Law (T.C.A. §49-6-3001 and T.C.A. §49-6-2007) requires that pupils of legal age attend school (ages six through seventeen years, both inclusive) unless special circumstances arise which temporarily or permanently excuse the student from attendance. By state law, the student’s school year shall consist of a minimum of 180 teaching days exclusive of all vacations, as approved by the Board of Education (T.C.A. §49-6-3004). The annual calendar is divided into two semesters. A copy of this calendar is available on the Collierville Schools website. The Collierville Board of Education believes that regular attendance is a necessary requirement of all students. All Students are expected to attend school each day that school is officially in session. Only the following reasons will be considered for excused absences: Absences shall be classified as either excused or unexcused as determined by the principal or his/her designee. Excused absences shall include: 1. Illness of student 2. Death or serious illness within the student’s immediate family 3. Official representative of school in a school sponsored activity 4. Special, recognized religious holidays regularly observed by persons of their faith 5. Legal court summons not as a result of the student’s misconduct 6. Extenuating circumstances created by emergencies over which the student has no control as approved by the principal. All absences other than those outlined above shall be considered unexcused. A written statement or e-mail to the teacher within two (2) school days of the student’s return to school shall be required from the parent or guardian explaining the reason for each absence. Failure to bring the note by the end of second day of school will result in the absence being considered unexcused.

Page 5: CROSSWIND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - Edl€¦ · STUDENT AND PARENT HANDBOOK CROSSWIND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Place Where Children Come First 831 West Shelton Road Collierville, Tennessee 38017

5

It is very important to send in this information so we will know whether to mark the absence as excused or unexcused. Please be sure to include the teacher’s name and the child’s complete proper name on the note. If a note is not received, the absence is recorded as unexcused. Tardies and early dismissals are cumulative. The principal must approve student absences due to family trips, outings, or parent business. Students who are absent five (5) days without adequate excuse shall be reported to the director of schools who will, in turn, provide written notice to the parents/guardians of the student's absence. The director of schools shall also comply with state law regarding the reporting of truant students to the proper authorities. Parents of students with (5) or more unexcused absences will be notified each 20-day period.

Make-up Work for Absent Students Students will be given time to do make-up work upon their return to school (one day for each day of absence). Please contact the office by 10:30AM to request assignments. Make-up work may be picked up after 3:30PM in the office.

BUILDING-GENERAL INFORMATION Visitors and Volunteers

Collierville Schools Policy #1.501 and T.C.A. 49-2-303 8(c) Parents, guardians, and other members of the community are always welcome at our school, but for reasons of safety we do insist that all visitors sign in at the office upon arrival to obtain a visitor’s pass, except on occasions such as school programs, athletic events, open house and similar events at night. All visitors to Crosswind Elementary School will be required to enter the building through the main entrance door during regular school hours. Upon arriving, visitors will push the access control button located to the right of the door. The front desk attendant will be able to view the visitor(s) on a monitor in the office. The front desk attendant will greet the visitor(s) and allow entrance to the building. Visitors will still be required to check in at the front desk and receive a visitor’s badge allowing access to the designated location in the building. No adult or visitor should enter any classroom without permission from the administration. All visitors must display a Crosswind Visitor's Badge on their lapel. All school personnel are instructed by Central Office to stop anyone in the building without a visitor’s badge. The school is committed to a safe campus without interruption of the instructional process.

School Hours School hours are from 9:00AM-4:00PM. Students are not to be on campus before 8:45AM unless attending a before school program or are in Y-CARE. Supervision begins at 8:45AM by school personnel. No exceptions will be made. The Collierville YMCA runs a before and after school child program on our campus (853-2355). Other before and after school care facilities are also available in the community. If adults are not present at the car rider drop-off after 9:00AM and the entrance is locked, do not drop off your child. Bring your child/children to the front entrance and accompany them inside. Students arriving after 9:00AM. must enter the building in the front and be accompanied by an adult to the office to check in. The front driveway is not for student drop-off after 9AM.

Bookstore The school operates a bookstore and sells the basic suggested supplies needed by students. Price lists are posted in the bookstore. Bookstore prices are subject to change. Operating times are 8:45-9:00 every day. Students must take care of all bookstore business before reporting to their homeroom at 9:00AM.

Inclement Weather Policy Emergency drills are held on a regular basis. In the event of local severe weather, the school communicates with the National Weather Service and the local police department, and takes the appropriate action that is in the best interest of the students. ALSO, you should have an "Early Dismissal Plan" on file with your child's teacher in case of early dismissal due to inclement weather. Please be sure to list all contacts who can pick up your child in case of inclement weather. Remember we cannot release your child to someone who is not on the list without your permission. Please DO NOT call the school to ask if school will close early. This ties up the phone lines needed for incoming information. Listen to the radio or tune in to a local television station for information on Collierville Schools closings. This is the quickest way to get information on school closings. If you happen to be at school during a practice emergency/safety drill, you will need to follow the instructions of office personnel as to where you need to go for the drill. We cannot dismiss children during a drill, but will have them come to the office as quickly as possible after the safety drill is completed.

Pets and Animals on Campus Pets/animals are prohibited on campus, as they can be a serious safety issue. Many students and teachers have allergies and/or fears of animals. Please leave your pet/animal at home.

Textbooks It is the student’s responsibility to take care of his or her textbooks. Each student is required to place book covers on school issued textbooks. Please do not use adhesive-backed book covers which damage school textbooks. These covers are to be removed when turning books in at the end of the school year to the classroom teacher.

These procedures are for the safety of all of our students and to accommodate enough seating for classrooms. Please do not walk back to your child’s class after lunch unless you are reading to the class or have made prior arrangements with the teacher. This helps teachers and children transition from lunch into the instructional part of their day! Please remember that many students have allergies and are allergic to all kinds of foods and additives that are in food that we eat daily. DO NOT share any food with other children in the lunchroom as this may cause a life-threatening emergency!

COMMUNICATION Crosswind Elementary is committed to keeping open lines of communication with its families. Many instruments are in place to enable parents to know what is going on at CWES and they are as follows: * PowerSchool Parent Portal * Report Cards with attendance and discipline * Homework Folders * Blackboard Connect-email and text notifications * Website, Facebook page, and Twitter * PTA Newsletter * Orientation Day, Curriculum Meetings, and Parent Teacher Conference Nights * Email * Classroom Communications from teacher via email or newsletters * Seesaw * Any community fliers, notices, or other communication to be sent home with the students or given out to parents or the public must be approved by the Collierville Schools Central Office.

Seesaw Seesaw is a multimedia journal that empowers students to showcase what they are learning at school. Throughout the school year, Seesaw will build an organized, digital portfolio of each student's learning, accessible by teacher, student and parent. Parents will receive information of how to access your child’s Seesaw journal at Curriculum Night.

Social Media Crosswind Elementary utilizes both Twitter (@crosswindeagles) and Facebook (Crosswind Elementary School CES) to promote various school activities and events. Teachers also have Twitter accounts to tweet about the wonderful happenings within our classrooms and school.

Telephones The telephones in the school office are for business use only. The school secretary or parent volunteers will call parents in case of a student’s illness. School telephones are not available for student’s use during regular or after school hours unless a school administrator has approved it. Please make sure your child has lunch money, homework, books, etc. each day. We know everyone forgets something occasionally; however, there are over 810 students at Crosswind and it is impossible to let all students call home if they forget something. Please make sure your child knows how he/she will get home daily. Please make prior arrangements for your child’s daily return home or after school care. This minimizes classroom interruptions. Crosswind teachers can be contacted by calling the school (853-3330). Since teachers are unable to receive calls during the school day, a message and telephone number will be taken. The teacher will return the call the same day, if possible. When it is not possible, the teacher will return your call the next school day.

Publication Permission At Crosswind Elementary, we love to involve students in every way possible. Illustrating their creative work is one way we involve them and show all the ways our students are so

special and talented. We need your help by providing permission to present their names, photographs, work, etc. in our areas of multimedia. Presentations include postings of work and/or photographs in the hallways, web pages, magazines, school newsletters, and local newspapers. Parents must grant permission for publication by agreeing to the permission form that was part of the online registration process.

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Conferences A parent-teacher conference is planned as a time for you to come to school to discuss your child’s academic performance with the teacher. Conference Nights are designated for you to take an opportunity to visit with your child’s teacher. Information regarding Conference Night will be distributed through your child’s teacher. You may contact your child’s teacher at any time to schedule a conference throughout the school year by simply calling the school office at 853-3330. Collierville Schools provides two conference days a year. The first will be on September 14, 2017, and the second will be on February 8, 2018. All conferences will be held between 4:00 – 7:00PM. Parents are encouraged to schedule conferences with their child’s teacher throughout the school year if the need arise to discuss the academic progress of the student. As teachers begin the school day, they will not be able to hold unscheduled parent-teacher conferences at the start of the school day during arrival time. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we begin the school day for each child with adequate supervision and optimal instructional opportunities.

Homework Your children need time to be children and young people, to participate in family activities, church activities, and to pursue special interests. Any assigned homework will be meaningful and not homework for homework's sake. It will include preparation for a lesson, reinforcement of an area covered, or aid for a student in an area of difficulty. The purpose of homework is to promote mastery of skills and concepts taught during classroom instruction. Students are strongly encouraged to read every night for twenty minutes as part of their homework routine. Students are asked to: * Understand that homework is part of the course and will support their ability to understand instructional information in preparation for further learning. * Make certain that homework assignments are understood before leaving school. * Complete and submit homework assignments by the due date. Parents are asked to: * Support teachers by providing a suitable working environment. * Remind students that homework is their responsibility. * Guide or assist with homework when unusual difficulties arise but never do the homework for the child. * Limit television/radio activity so that homework does not suffer. * Communicate with the teacher as needed. Taking too long to complete homework needs to be addressed with the classroom teacher to determine what the issues might be.

Instructional Program All Crosswind teachers are required to teach the academic standards as set forth by the State of Tennessee Department of Education. The standards for each grade level and content area can be retrieved at: http://www.tennessee.gov/education/topic/academic-standards.

Library The library seeks to encourage the love of reading, to develop reading skills, and to support and enhance the school curriculum. Library books, periodicals, reference materials, and computers are available. The library is open and staffed by a librarian throughout each school day, including a short time before and after school. Overdue book fines are not charged, but replacement fees are charged for damaged or lost books. Monetary gifts or donations of new and gently used books may be given to the library anytime, and can be used to commemorate special occasions such as birthdays or in memory of a loved one. Parent volunteers are invited to help in the library and to assist with the annual book fair.

Physical Activity We have planned a well-rounded instructional physical education program for your child throughout the school year. It will be necessary for your child to participate in order to fully benefit from the program. The activities used in class will increase endurance, flexibility, strength and coordination, as well as provide a better understanding and appreciation of various sports. All children will be required to participate unless a doctor’s certificate is presented. All students must wear soft sole tennis shoes for PE class.

Page 11: CROSSWIND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - Edl€¦ · STUDENT AND PARENT HANDBOOK CROSSWIND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Place Where Children Come First 831 West Shelton Road Collierville, Tennessee 38017

11

STEM All students in grades K-5 will visit the STEM lab every other week and will participate in STEM-related activities. Students will adopt a design-thinking mindset through compelling activities, projects, and problems that build upon each other and relate to the world around them. And as students engage in hands-on activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they become creative, collaborative problem solvers ready to take on any challenge.

Visual Arts and Music Art is a very important component for a well-rounded education. While studying the elements and principles of art, students are encouraged to express themselves as individuals, to respect the work of others, and to share their artistic creations. Art activities stimulate creativity, exploration, problem-solving and cooperative learning. The Art teachers are both excellent teachers who do a great job of helping our students develop their artistic talents. Music education at the elementary school level is a vital aspect of a successful school’s curriculum. Music education programs increase children’s cognitive development. Music and chorus are both offered at Crosswind for students to learn and become more aware of the many aspects of music, including playing instruments and creating songs. Students will also learn many songs from American culture, as well as songs from other countries from around the world.

STUDENTS-GENERAL INFORMATION Arrival and Dismissal Procedures for Students

The doors will open at 8:45AM each school day. Please make sure that your child does not arrive before 8:45AM unless they are enrolled in the Y-CARE program or participating in a before school sponsored activity. CWES students will be dismissed at 4:00PM and exit the building at that time. Students will not exit the building prior to the school’s regular dismissal time. Please make arrangements for your child’s dismissal and exiting of the building at 4:00PM. Students must leave the campus immediately unless participating in an after school sponsored activity. Students will be dismissed as day care, bike rider, walker, car rider or bus rider. Students may not remain anywhere in the building unsupervised. For the safety of our students, we must insist that all students be picked up every day on time. A note is required for early dismissal. Children must be picked up in the office and signed out of school by the parent, guardian or other designee on the registration form. Photo identification is required of all persons signing a student out of school. Parents should avoid checking out students before regular dismissal. Please do not change the way your child goes home unless you write a note to your child’s teacher and the office. No student may be checked out after 3:30 p.m. All tardies and early dismissal times will be indicated in PowerSchool. These can add up to missed days. ** Kindergarten parents may walk their student to class on staggered enrollment day and the first full week of school, if desired. For the safety and development of each kindergarten child and to help each one make adjustments to their new adventure, we will allow students to walk to class by themselves after the first full week of school. In all other grade levels, we are asking parents to walk their child to class only during the first week. Employees are available in the hallway and around the building if students need assistance.

Check-in/Check-out Procedures Check-in: Students arriving on campus after 9:00AM are tardy and must be accompanied by an adult to the office to check-in and receive an admission slip to class. Announcements and instruction begin promptly at 9:05AM. Do not drop your child off at the front entrance to the school. You will need to accompany them to the office and check them in. Check-out: No child may be checked out at the office after 3:30PM. We are preparing to end the day for a safe and orderly dismissal at that time. If you must check your child out, it must be before 3:30PM.

Should your child be checking out early in the school day, please send a note to your child's homeroom teacher notifying her of an early checkout for your child. The office will notify your child when you arrive. Students will not be called down to the office before your arrival. The only persons allowed to check out your child are the persons listed on the registration form. We cannot release children to persons not listed on the registration form you completed without written parental permission. It is the parent's responsibility to notify the office in writing of any changes in student/parent information on the registration form. An ID is required of all persons checking out a student. If your child has special considerations, such as limited or shared custody rights, please notify the school each year. We comply with all court orders. However, because of the number of cases we handle, we must have a current letter on file.

Birthday Parties and Celebrations Due to the increase in food allergies and parent concerns, parents MAY NOT bring ANY food, such as cupcakes, cookies, etc., for celebrations, such as birthdays, into the cafeteria or classroom. You may still bring your child food when coming to eat with them, and if it is their birthday, you may bring your child a treat! We only ask that you not give any type of food to the other children in the classroom or cafeteria. We want your child to be recognized on their birthday, but food should not be a part of the celebration. Your child may bring classroom treat bags that will be given out in class that may contain pencils, stickers, fun games, dollar store items, etc.

Party invitations can be distributed in class if the child is inviting all the girls or all the boys or inviting the whole class. Your child may not hand out birthday invitations to a few select children as this causes hurt feelings and disrupts the classroom, taking away from instructional time. If you wish to invite only a few children to a birthday party we ask that you use the student directory to mail party invitations to fellow classmates and friends.

There are two school parties during the school year, Winter Break and Valentine’s Day. Food that is brought in for our two school parties during the year will be monitored by the classroom teacher according to the health needs of his/her classroom. The Health Department requires that any treat such as cupcakes, brownies, cookies, etc. must be store bought items.

Change of Telephone Number Any change of telephone numbers should be brought to the attention of the school office by the parent. It is very important for the school to have current information at all times.

Custodial Issues The custodial parent is the parent that the school personnel should consider the legal guardian and follow this parent’s direction as to what access the non-custodial parent shall have to the child(ren). In cases of joint custody, the parent with primary custody, or with whom the child lives, shall be considered the custodial parent. The non-custodial parent is entitled to all school records, if requested, including meeting with the teacher for informational purposes only. The custodial parent has the right to make all educational decisions unless it is stated differently in a court order. The custodial parent will determine the non-custodial parent’s access to the child(ren).

Discipline Crosswind Elementary embraces the philosophy of assertive discipline. This approach includes both positive rewards and negative consequences. Each teacher will establish, post and reinforce expected behaviors (rules) which enhance the learning process. Every student is expected to comply with these rules which basically fall into three categories: respect for self, respect for others, and respect for property. When compliance with rules does not occur, a progressive discipline approach is used for school and bus conduct. Maintaining an effective learning environment requires the commitment of parents, teachers and students. For this reason, your cooperation is essential. A copy of the discipline plan is sent home at the beginning of the year for your information.

Conduct Grades In accordance to Collierville Schools Policy #4.600, Kindergarten student grades for Social Expectations will be represented with “S” for satisfactory and “N” for needs improvement. For grades 1-5, student conduct is graded as “E”, “S”, “N” and is to be reported at each grading period on the report card.

Discipline and Self-Control It is the desire of parents and school personnel that each student grows in the direction of appropriate/acceptable behavior for both school and home. We know that problems, conflicts and misunderstandings do arise from time to time. Our responsibility as adults must always be to teach children acceptable ways to deal with conflict, anger and hurt feelings. We can best do this by our own examples and by insisting that students respect themselves, their peers, their parents and all school personnel. WE CANNOT AND WILL NOT TOLERATE DISRESPECT. Students should not hit others or hit back when conflict is encountered. TELL THE NEAREST ADULT. Students will be expected to show respect for themselves and others at all times. We will not allow inappropriate behavior.

School Wide Agreement Respect yourself. Respect others.

Respect property (students are not allowed to sell/trade personal property). Observe quiet zones.

Bring supplies needed for school and leave all other items at home.

Students may not bring items from home to play with during school or on the playground (examples: iPods, toys, gum, balls, bats, calculators, etc. unless specifically requested in writing by the teacher to be used for a short period for a specific instructional purpose).

Dress Code Crosswind does not have a uniform dress code policy. Please see the guidelines in the Collierville Student Handbook for appropriate dress for our school. The responsibility for appearance of the students begins with parents and the students themselves. Student clothing, make-up and hairstyles should reflect neatness, cleanliness and self-respect so that the school is a desirable place in which to promote learning and character development. A student who is not attired appropriately or exhibits grooming which is detrimental and/or distractive to the school environment shall be asked to refrain from wearing the inappropriate attire in the future or shall be required to make arrangements for more suitable or appropriate dress. The principal or principal’s designee shall make the final determination.

Field Trips * Parent permission is required for all field trips. If your child does not return the permission slip for the trip, he/she will not be permitted to go. Students who do not go on the trip with their class will be assigned to another classroom for the day. * Parent chaperones must provide their own transportation. * Other children and/or siblings may not attend the field trip. Field trips are considered part of the instructional day and provide experiences that are an integral part of the school curriculum, including Community-Based Instruction and Work-Based Learning, and contributes to the School Board's desired educational goals (Collierville Schools Policy #4.302). * All students are required to ride the provided school buses to and from the field trip location even if their parents/guardians are chaperones.

Lost Items Please write your child’s name on coats, hats, sweaters, purses, lunch boxes, etc. Every year numerous items are found and we are unable to return them because there are no names identifying the rightful owners. If your child is missing a garment or item, have him or her check in the Lost and Found area. Unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity at the end of each semester.

Money If you send money or checks to school for any reason, please send it in an envelope labeled with the child’s name, teacher’s name and purpose. Students should not be allowed to bring money to school unless there is a definite need. When sending in a check, please remember to put the child’s name, teacher’s name, and home phone number on the check. If you are paying for more than one child, please write a check for each child separately. Also, when writing a check for workbooks, T-shirts, etc., we cannot take one check for all items, but instead have to ask you to send in separate checks for each area. This is a requirement from the board.

TRANSPORTATION Buses

Bus service is provided for students who live more than 1.5 miles from the school. Students may only ride the bus that serves their home address and may only get on or off the bus at their assigned stop. Students may not ride another bus home with a friend. Students should be at their assigned bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time. Students are expected to observe the same conduct on the bus as in the classroom.

• Speak in a quiet voice and use appropriate language. • Students must sit in their assigned seat, with their back and bottom on the seat and keep hands

and feet in their space. • Be courteous and cooperative with the driver. • Keep the bus clean and be respectful of school property. • Eating or drinking is not allowed on the bus (water bottles must be emptied before boarding the

bus). • Electronic devices, live animals and tobacco products are prohibited on the bus. • Backpack size is limited to one the students can pick up and hold in their lap.

Due to safety concerns, we are asking that bus students not bring umbrellas onto the bus because they have created safety hazards when trying to enter and exit the bus. Misconduct on the bus will result in disciplinary action. A priority for us at Crosswind Elementary is the safety of all children. Disciplinary action can include discipline referrals and bus suspensions depending on the severity of the infraction. Video cameras are installed on every bus and are viewed by the bus coordinator upon request. For student confidentially purposes, parents are not permitted to view bus videos. It is imperative that the provided bus rules be reviewed with each child and signed by the parent. Bus rule forms will be returned and maintained by the teacher. Students in grades K through 1st grade are required by the district to be supervised by an adult parent or guardian when delivered home to the bus stop. If no one is present, the student will be returned to his or her school for supervision until picked up by a parent.

Bikers Bikers/Scooters/Skateboarders/Skaters will be dismissed by grade levels to the crosswalk area nearest the bus loop or to the back of the school nearest the gym. Bike racks are located in designated areas. Bikes must be chained to the bike racks. Bikes/scooters/skateboards/skates will not be taken to the classrooms. Bikers are required to wear helmets. BIKERS MUST ALWAYS WALK THEIR BIKES WHEN ON SCHOOL PROPERTY OR WHEN CROSSING THE ROADS.

Proceed to the end of the painted lines of the circular drive. Park cars in single file nearest the curb. Place auto transmission in “Park” when traffic flow stops for student exiting. Driver should pull up directly behind the car in front of them to maximize available space. Attendants will direct students to depart on the curb side of the circular drive. Attendants are present to assist with safety. Cars must stay in line, parallel to the curb. No vehicle should pull around or pass another vehicle in this line. Please adhere to a five mile per hour speed limit while driving on the school grounds. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING CELL PHONES IN THE CAR LINE.

Car Riders – Afternoon Dismissal/Pick-Up No parking or departures will be allowed in the Visitors’ parking area in the circular drive between 3:00PM and 4:15PM. Proceed to the end of the painted lines of the circular drive. Park cars in single file nearest the curb. Place auto transmission in “Park” when traffic flow stops. Child’s name must be visible in car front window to attendants. Attendants will direct students to enter designated cars on the curb side of the circular drive. Attendants are present to assist with safety. When all cars are filled, an attendant will direct the cars to leave the loading zone. Attendants will direct cars to depart when deemed safe. When the line of cars has cleared the loading zone, attendants will direct additional cars to enter the drive and repeat the above procedure until all students have departed. PLEASE DO NOT WALK STUDENTS BETWEEN CARS TO ENTER OR EXIT THE SCHOOL. USE THE CIRCULAR SIDEWALK ONLY.

Transportation Change If you wish to change your child’s dismissal procedure for the afternoon you must submit it to your child’s teacher in written form. Otherwise, students will be dismissed according to the information recorded on the registration form. A verbal message to the teacher from a child is not acceptable. If you send information by email it may or may not be received by the teacher in time for dismissal. Instances where it would not be received are if the classroom has a substitute teacher, the wireless network is not working, etc. Please do not rely on email to let a teacher know of your child’s plans for the end of the day if there is a change. We recommend that you do not change your child’s end of day plan, except when it is necessary due to family emergencies, etc. Remember: A student may not ride a school bus home with a friend. Students can only ride home on the bus they are assigned to.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS Health and Your Child

Our goal is to keep your children and their school environment as safe and healthy as possible. To accomplish this, we are asking for your help. Your child needs to stay at home if they have one or more of the following symptoms: • A fever of 100 degrees or more • A productive cough • Thick, yellow or green drainage from the nose or eyes • Diarrhea • Skin rashes or eruptions • Red throat, swollen glands around the jaw, ears or neck • Complaints of earache, severe stomachache or headache, or sore throat • Nausea, vomiting or recurrent vomiting • Lethargy, muscle aches or flu-like symptoms • Head or body lice • Ringworm (must be treated and covered before returning to school).

Students who have any of these symptoms should remain home until they are symptom free for 24 hours. This time allows full recovery and prevents students from returning with a decreased resistance to infection. Your cooperation in helping to maintain a healthy school environment is greatly appreciated. Minor accidents are handled in the health room by parent volunteers. All head injuries and other more serious accidents are immediately reported to the parent(s). If a student has a fever, is contagious, or feels too sick to stay at school, parents are called. In the event a parent cannot be reached, it is imperative that the names and numbers of other family members or friends who may be contacted are available to the health room.

Healthy Choices /Wellness Initiative “Striving to provide our students with the most advantageous education we cannot neglect or ignore the vital responsibility of teaching them about a healthy lifestyle. We believe this encompasses social, emotional and physical health. We know it will take the education of our students, their families, our community and ourselves. We reason that by promoting our Healthy Choices/Wellness Initiative throughout our entire school not only our students and their families but our faculty and staff and the surrounding community will benefit greatly.” The Tennessee Coordinated School Health Plan (CSH) is now mandatory for all schools. This plan is an effective system designed to connect health (physical, emotional and social) with education. We are proud to say we are “ahead of the ballgame,” and have begun merging these two programs through our Healthy School Team efforts and our AdvancED goals.

Medication The school nurse or principal’s designee will administer medicine to students. A form with written instructions for administering the medication must be signed by the parent. This will be kept on file in the front office. Medication must be in the original container with the label stating current dispensing instructions from the physician. Medication must be brought to school by an adult. Students may not bring medicine to school. Oral medication, such as

Page 18: CROSSWIND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - Edl€¦ · STUDENT AND PARENT HANDBOOK CROSSWIND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Place Where Children Come First 831 West Shelton Road Collierville, Tennessee 38017

18

aspirin, will not be given to children under any circumstances by school personnel. No student can have medication, cough drops, or any other oral medicines in their possession.

Snacks Crosswind Healthy Snack Policy

Crosswind established a Healthy Snack Policy in order to encourage healthy lifetime habits for our students. The policy has received overwhelming support from parents and favorable results from the students. We realize that treats and sweets have become the most common foods offered for celebrations therefore we would like to ask everyone to balance the old with the new. We ask that every ‘empty calorie’ food be balanced with a healthy choice. Examples: Sweets for a holiday party could be balanced with grapes; cookies brought for a celebration could be balanced with carrot & celery sticks. A suggestion is to have 100% fruit juice, bottles of water, or low-fat milk instead of soda or sugary drinks.

Parents, if you need assistance on choices you may go to one of the following websites, talk to your child’s teacher, our cafeteria manager, the school nurse or our administrative staff. Remember, parents are the biggest influence on their child’s health habits. Let’s work together to educate our children and help them adopt habits that will ensure a long, healthy life.
