1. Approach from upwind
2. Reduce speed
3. Try to ascertain if there are any explosive items on board, such as propane tanks, compressed air, etc.
4. Observe the situation. Look for survivors.
5. If necessary, prepare to land a crewmember on the burning vessel to help the injured victim. If the fire appears to be minor, your crew should try to fight it.

0944 Arrive on scene, 3 persons in water, casualty on foredeck appears to have burns on arm and chest. Stern of vessel on fire. Launch dingy to retrieve casualty first, then pick up persons in water. Call for helicopter evacuation. Stabilize victim.

1. Give your vessel’s position and description as accurately as possible.
2. Give details about the casualty’s condition and advise immediately if there is a change.
3. Advise the helicopter crew if you are alone with the victim.4. If necessary, relay messages through the Canadian Coast
Guard or other radio station.5. Clear a large area on deck if possible and take down any
nearby aerials.6. Ensure all loose gear on deck is securely tied down or
removed.7. In daytime, identify your vessel with a daytime signal,
such as a Type “D” smoke signal.8. At night, point lights vertically upward or on sails, or fire a
Type “A” parachute flare. Then light the best pickup area.

Check vital signs once again.
If indicated, place the casualty (wearing a PFD if possible) in a stretcher, strapped so he or she can not slip out.
Place the casualty’s records (if any), with notes of treatment given.
Describe the bandaged or covered area to the medical flight crew along with a brief, detailed history of the event.
