Carnival Corp better than expectedCarnival has reported a strong

quarter, with higher revenue and

ower costs than anticipated, but

ess impressive results in Australia.ACCORDING to the companys Q2 financial

report released on Friday, its Australian brands

which include P&O, Carnival Cruise Lines,

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises)

saw slightly lower yields than its brands inNorth America over the past three months.

But Carnival Corporation CEO Micky Arison

said he was pleased with non-GAAP earnings

of US$159 million for April, May and June.

Cruise ticket prices (excluding Costa) held firm

close to sailing which, combined with stronger

han expected onboard revenues, drove yields

above prior year levels, Arison said.

Our North American brands performed well,

achieving a 3% revenue yield improvement

compared to the prior year, which more than

offset slightly lower yields for our Europe,

Australia and Asia brands (excluding Costa).

Reported US GAAP net income for the

second quarter of 2012 was US$14 million,

and revenues were US$3.5 billion compared

to US$3.6 billion for the same period in 2011.

Since March, fleetwide booking volumes

have continued to improve and are runningwell ahead of the prior year at lower prices,

Carnival Corp said in a statement.

For the last seven weeks, booking volumes

(excluding Costa) have increased 8% verses

last year, while booking volumes for Costa

over the same time period are up 25%.

The increase in booking volumes indicates

that a progressive recovery is well underway

and we are catching up following the

slowdown in bookings during wave season,

our peak booking period, Arison said.

The attractive pricing we have in the

marketplace is clearly stimulating demand,especially for the Costa brand.

We are pleased to see the resurgence in

consumer demand for Costa, which is a

testament to the brands long-standing

reputation for quality built over many decades.

The company forecasts full-year 2012 net

revenue yields to be down slightly.

Rhone & Rhine river combo SCENIC Tours has expanded its France river-

addition of a seven-night Amsterdam to Baselcruise followed by the new seven-night

Chalon-sur-Sane to Arles cruise.

The tour can also be taken in reverse.

We seem to have done an extraordinary jobof telling everybody what a great family

holiday Carnival Spiritis, and it is, she said.

But its also a great holiday for couples and

empty-nesters, and I dont think weve done as

good a job of telling everybody that, she added.

Speaking to media to introduce them to what

she described as Sydneys newest entertainment

quarter Vandekreeke said that Spiritoffers

couples experiences which can take them from

zen to adrenalin.

Docked at Sydneys OPT, this entertainment

quarter will take you all the way to Fiji, New

Caledonia, NZ, or wherever you may go,

Vandekreeke said, adding that from 8pm

theres a whole lot of stuff going on onboard.

Australian comedians), loads of live music

performances (even in the casino), and DJs.

Speaking to CWabout the reason behind the

push for couples, Vandekreeke said Were

almost out of quad share rooms, because there

has been such an extraordinary response from

families, and Im not going to lie it is a great

family holiday, but its also great for couples.

I think that when we entered the market it

was differentiating to be a family holiday and

so everyone put it in that box, and so were

trying to explain to people that its not only

great for families, its perfect for couples.

The other challenge we had is that families

will book the school holidays but when youre

outside of the holiday period or when you

have the longer sailings, families arent going

to go on those sailings, she added.

Allaying the fears of couples who are worried

about being flooded with children Vandekreeke

told CWthat youre not really going to be in

the same places onboard the ship- and

remember the ship is three football fields long.

The reality is during the day if you are on

the ship and youre a couple you are going to

be in Serenity, youre going to be in the day

spa, youre going to be going to the restaurants,

youre not going to see the kids because the

kids are in the splash park, theyre in the kids

club or theyre on the mini-golf course.

There is an absolute separation of where

adults and couples are going to be, she said.

Saga Sapphire engine issues IT seems that the Saga Sapphire is again

experiencing mechanical troubles, with the

vessel running into problems with its back-up

generator last Friday whilst in Trmso Fjord.

Saga Cruises onboard engineering team

worked around the clock to fix the issue, and

on Saturday external experts were called in to

help achieve a permanent solution.

The fix and subsequent testing of the back-

up generator was completed on Saturday night

and the Sapphire set off for Bergen on Sundaymorning.

We will, of course, do the right thing by our

customers and properly recognise that we

have not been able to complete our planned

itinerary, a spokesperson for Saga told CW.

DAWN sees guests gather in Gallipoli on the

Sun.

Hundreds of guests onboard Sun Princess

gathered at the break of daylight to

remember the thousands of Australian and

NZ soldiers who fought at Gallipoli in 1915.

The moving service was led by CaptainAndrew Froude and priest Kevin Taylor

whilst Sun sailed the waters of Anzac Cove

on Turkeys Gallipoli Peninsula.

The service (pictured below) included a

tribute sung by around 140 members of the

ships onboard passenger choir, which was

followed by a wreath ceremony performed

by Returned Service League official Graham

Aboard National Geographic (Lindblad) Expeditions in Alaska

It was Lars Eric Lindblad who could make the claim to have openedup commercial expedition cruising back in the 60s with hisgroundbreaking (or perhaps, ice breaking) trips to Antarctica (seeCW10 August 2012).

While Lindblad Expeditions may be a different company nowadays,the spirit of Lars Eric lives on with a fleet of 17 vessels, including

locally chartered ships, offering a vast array of enriching expeditionsin every ecological hotspot on the planet.

Here in SE Alaska, Lindblad is one of just a handful of small shipcruise lines with comprehensive, immersive itineraries in this regiontypified by towering, snow-capped mountains, enormous icefieldswith their glacial offspring and a menagerie of fascinating wildliferanging from grizzly bears and humpback whales to giant slugs andjellyfish. National Geographic Sea Birdis the perfect size vessel for accessingthese secluded coves and bays that the big ships might only glimpsefrom afar.

We nuzzle into hidden backwaters like Elfin Cove, Petersburg andBartlett Cove where we disembark and stroll around like locals.

Likewise with our busy activity schedule which includes a choice ofhikes in varying length, kayaking on the mirror-like water or Zodiaccruises to explore wildlife and scenic splendours.

One night we anchored off Point Adolphus and those who chose togo to bed were kept awake by humpback whales blowing just metresfrom the ship. I watched for an hour or more as a baby humpbackcavorted with young sea lions, intermittently spy-hopping, fluke-

waving and breaching just outside my cabin window.While weather here can be bleak and wet, we were blessed with

consecutive days of bright sun and clear skies, making our shoreexcursions warm work indeed. Snow-frosted mountain ranges trailedoff to infinity while it was a cinch to spot mountain goats high up onledges and the occasional bear foraging along the shore, biding time

before the much anticipated salmon run.Apart from the at times overwhelming splendour of the glaciers and

fjords, we are visited by Bertha Franulovich, a native Tlingit elderwho spends a full day aboard helping us fathom the complex familyand tribal structures as well as the powerful connection her forebearsheld with this land.

While I am the only Australian aboard, the crew and fellowpassengers make me feel welcome and comfortable and I amflattered with constant requests to join various tables for dinner.

Two families with children under 10 clearly enjoy the quality timetogether in an environment far removed from the dulling effects ofiPhones and computer games. Meals are restaurant quality usingplenty of locally-sourced produce with highlights of salmon, halibut,crab and shellfish, all complemented by excellent regional wines.
