World renowned brands and inventions have placed Sweden on the map of the world. Unspoilt nature where everyone has the freedom to roam

is an benefit not found in many other places.

THE SWEDISH CLIMATEIt would be easy to think of Sweden as a country with a harsh climate. However, the heat from the Gulf Stream makes the average temperature in southern Sweden no lower than –2°C in February, rising to +21.1°C in July. On sunny days between May and August temperatures can rise to +30°C in the air and +24°C in the sea and lakes. The changing seasons affect na-ture, daylight, and temperature and to some extent even the Swedes themselves. Every season has its perks, but spring and summertime in Sweden is a must. From late February to early March the days become longer and brighter.

THE RIGHT OF PUBLIC ACCESSIn Sweden, everyone has the right to enjoy the countryside. It is called the right of public access and is a benefit not found in a many other countries. For further information please see: www.allemansratten.se

Gothenburg, the largest port in Scandinavia, has been a thriving maritime centre ever since the 18th century, when the East India Company operated the Chinese sea routes from the

west coast. In 2021 Gothenburg celebrates 400 years and has all the advantages of a European metropolis – but with a charming small town feel. The port has no darkness

restrictions which makes it possible to visit Gothenburg any time of the year.

THE FRIENDLY CITY BY THE SEASituated on the Swedish west coast, with the Atlantic waves dashing against the rocks, Gothenburg has historically func-tioned as Sweden’s international gateway. Its location is stra-tegic, between the Scandinavian capitals of Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. The city was built by Dutchmen, and in the 17th century the official languages were Dutch, German, Swedish and English. In the 18th century The Swedish East India Company began trading with the east. Porcelain, tea, spices, textiles and other luxury goods of the time were ship-ped to Gothenburg, in exchange for silver. The trade had a huge impact on the city, and it can still be distinguished.

Modern-day Gothenburg is a green city with boulevards and many parks. Tram is a popular mode of transport amongst the 560,000 inhabitants. The compact city centre hosts lots of independent boutiques, shopping malls and cafés, all within easy walking distances. Two universities, both situated in the city centre, and some 50,000 students give Gothenburg a lively atmosphere.

The closeness to the sea makes Gothenburg special. The coast and islands are renowned for their natural beauty and pictu-resque habitation. Gothenburg is rated one of the best food cities in Europe, and the city has several Michelin starred rest-aurants. Excellent fish and seafood are often featured on the menu.

Gothenburg is Sweden’s most popular summer destination, with Liseberg Amusement Park – Sweden’s number one tou-rist attraction. The Christmas City Gothenburg also attracts lots of visitors with its contemporary lighting design and many traditional Christmas markets.

• Cruise passengers in Gothenburg spend an average of SEK 460 per person.*

• The average cruise visitor is aged 52. The majority, 73 %, were over 45 years old.

• A majority came from Germany and most tourists visited Gothenburg for the first time.

• Cruise visitors are highly active during their time in the city, looking to get the very most out of their trip.

• The most important factors for cruise visitors are trans-portation to and from the city centre, access to informa-tion at the dock area, the cleanliness and appearance of the city and the friendliness and language skills of the locals.

• Gothenburg answers to the expectations in regards to friendliness, language skills of the locals, and the clean-liness of the city. Gothenburg is also considered to be a very green city.

• However, the overall price level in shops and boutiques, and also the service level in taxi got the lowest ratings.

Every third year, we ask our cruise visitors what they think of Gothenburg. Their expectations and how well we answer to them are important to us. It provides a

platform for further development and hopefully valuable information for cruise lines. The results from passenger surveys are summarised below.

Environmental issues constitute an important foundation for the activities and the port is convinced to contribute to a long-term sustainable development by an integrated and proactive environmental work to achieve a minimum of negative envi-ronmental impact.

The Port of Gothenburg was one of the first ports in the world to offer Onshore Power Supply and as a result it has attracted a great deal of attention internationally. At present it is pas-

senger and freight carriers operating scheduled traffic within Europe that uses this technology.

For cruise lines signing an agreement to connect vessels to onshore power, the port makes the facility available within 12 months. Ships powered by Liquified Natural Gas, LNG, will-receive a special discount. Read more: www.portofgothenburg.com/maritime/port-tariff

The Volvo Museum is situated right next to the quay in Aren-dal. An impressive 6,000 m² museum featuring around 100 ve-hicles historical and new – including cars, trucks, buses and construction machines. Here you can see fascinating concept vehicles, which have never been produced, e.g “Your Concept Car”, designed by nine women. There is also a café and shop where you can buy souvenirs, postcards, and other interesting merchandise.

The quay is equipped with a terminal building, restrooms, sou-venir shop and a tourist information office.

It takes around 15–20 minutes to get to central Gothenburg by shuttle bus or taxi.

Being Scandinavia’s largest port, we are able to handle all kind of vessels. The largest ships are sometimes docked in the container terminal Skandia. Guests cannot walk around inde-pendently here due to ISPS-regulations, but it only takes 15–20 minutes to the city centre by shuttle bus, something we always recommend cruise lines to offer on board. Taxis are available at the gate.

We are now able to offer a new, centrally located cruise termi-nal – America Cruise Terminal. It was from here, more than 100 years ago, that the first liners departed for North Ame-rica and they continued to do so until 1975.This beautiful and historic setting is now revived as the central cruise terminal in Gothenburg. The white terminal building – Amerikaskjulet – was constructed in 1912 and has become one of the land-marks of Gothenburg. It is also the headquarter for The Port of Gothenburg.

LISEBERG AMUSEMENT PARKThe Liseberg amusement park is a fantastic park, not only for those who enjoy a thrilling ride on roller coasters. People also visit the park for shows and concerts or for a stroll, admi- ring the plentiful flower arrangements. Liseberg has more than 3 million visitors a year, making it Sweden’s most popu-lar attraction and the largest amusement park in the Nordic countries. The park is home to many exiting rides, including the roller coaster Balder, ranked to be the no. 1 wooden roller coaster in the world.

THE EAST INDIAMAN GÖTHEBORGIn 1984, the Swedish East Indiaman Götheborg was found in the inlet of Gothenburg harbour where it had sunk in Septem-ber 1745. The attention surrounding the find and the excava-tion whetted people’s appetites, and led to the slightly crazy idea of rebuilding the entire vessel – in full scale using tradi-tional techniques – and sailing to China once again. On the 9th of June 2007, the new East Indiaman Götheborg returned to her home port after a fantastic and adventurous expedition to China. The ship is a full scale replica of an 18th century wood-

en sailing ship and was built using traditional techniques. Visit the shipyard and go on board the ship for an exciting trip into the past.

Most of the rock carvings date back to the Bronze Age 1,800–500 BC. The Vitlycke Museum shows the interesting history of the people from the era, as well as several pieces of jewellery and tools that were found during the excavations. The whole area of Vitlycke is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with the motivation: “The rock carvings of the Tanum region constitute an outstanding example of Bronze Age art of the highest quality. The range of motifs provides exceptional evidence of many aspects of life in the European Bronze Age. The continuity of settlement and consistency in land use in Tanum, as illustrated by the rock art, the archaeological remains, and the features of the modern landscape in the Tanum region, combined to make this a re-markable example of continuity over eight millennia of human history.”

CHRISTMAS CRUISING

Combining contemporary Swedish design and a warm sense of tradition, Gothenburg lights the way to Christmas. A three kilometre long ‘Lane of Light’ stretches through the city, from the harbour, along the main boulevard to the

glittering lights of Liseberg amusement park.

GOTHENBURG CHRISTMAS CITYIn November central Gothenburg is transformed into the Christ-mas City, starting with the opening of the traditional Christmas market at Liseberg Amusement Park, and the illumination of the lights along the Lane of Light. In the beginning of December all the festive light installations in the city centre highlight build-ings, bridges and trees, whilst large scale light and sound shows provide extra Yuletide enjoyment.

LISEBERG CHRISTMAS MARKETClose to five million glimmering lights adorn the trees and buildings of Scandinavia’s largest Christmas market in Liseberg Amusement Park. This features some 80 rustic market stalls and shops selling arts and crafts, as well as festive foods – from the traditional Swedish pickled herring, roasted reindeer meat served by Sami (indigenous people from Lappland), to seasonal Swedish goodies, such as marzipan pigs and glögg, traditional mulled and spiced wine. Open from mid-November until the end of December.

THE LANE OF LIGHTFrom the central harbour, along the main boulevard Avenyn, to the glimmering magic of Liseberg, the Lane of Light is a total of three kilometres of festive magic. Combining innovative lighting design with a love of old-fashioned Christmas, the city architects and light designers are creating a unique atmosphere following a theme in central Gothenburg.

CHRISTMAS IN HAGA, THE OLD QUARTERThe early 19th century cobblestone streets of Haga, lend a dis-tinctive charm to its Christmas market. Outdoor market stalls selling home-made and locally produced goods compete with the trendy as well as vintage boutiques and unique curiosa shops that line the main street Haga Nygatan. The many cafés provide the perfect pit stop for coffee and typical Christmas pepparkakor (ginger snaps) and lussebullar (buns spiced with saffron).
