offer alternative connectivity throughout the Cityfor Anaheim’s residents and visitors.

What sets the City of Anaheim apart from thosemetropolises is their partnership with Tustin-basedBike Nation, the only major bike sharing companyin the world whose program is completely privatelyfunded. Without the use of taxpayer dollars, BikeNation and the City of Anaheim are preparing to rollout the City’s first 10 kiosks and 100 custom-built“Made in the USA” bikes later this month, signifyingthe start of an exciting one-year pilot program which,if successful, will lead to up to additional kiosks andBike Nation bikes available in Anaheim.

Announced kiosk locations include Anaheim CityHall, a showcase site for the City’s visitors; AnaheimConvention Center, providing an alternate form oftransportation to the more than 20 million visitorswhose vacation plans bring them to the AnaheimResort each year; and City National Grove of Ana-heim and Anaheim Metrolink Station, providingeasy access for fans to Anaheim Stadium of Anaheim. The Grove will also service the growing PlatinumTriangle area, including The Catch restaurant and thesurrounding new housing, with the Metrolink kioskserving as a hub for people visiting Anaheim by train, allowing them to rent a Bike Nation bike at the stationand ride on to their favorite Anaheim destinations.

Paramount for Bike Nation in its decision-mak-ing process for choosing kiosk locations is connec-tivity to transit, employment centers, educationalfacilities, points of interests and other relatedlocations. Bike Nation is working closely with theCity of Anaheim and private businesses to securethe most desirable and easily accessible locations, with more bike share kiosks to be announcedcloser to launch.

Additionally, Bike Nation has plans to expand itsbike share program to other communities beyondAnaheim. The company has already announced plans

to provide 400 kiosks and 4,000 bikes in DowntownLos Angeles, Hollywood, Westwood and the VeniceBeach area and is in discussions with other SouthernCalifornia communities about its bike share pro-gram. For Anaheim subscribers, that means theycan utilize any of the systems within the other BikeNation communities.

How Does It Work?A bicycle share system is a self-service kiosk

rental system where individuals can rent and returna bicycle anywhere within a network of stationswithin the City of Anaheim. Stations are locatedin close proximity for quick trips where users live, work and visit. The bikes are chainless and featureactive GPS technology and airless tires, helpingreduce the need for on-road service. The kiosks aremodular, portable, wirelessly connected and solarpowered so that monitoring and load balancing iseasily managed. The usage fees for the bicycle sharesystem are incentivized for turnover and trips ofless than 30 minutes in duration.

As Californians continue to look for ways to reducetheir carbon footprint, the City of Anaheim and BikeNation are leading the way by providing a healthyalternative for residents and visitors alike. !

what makesbike nation bikes

so special?

Chainless BikeThe bike is equipped with a shaft-drive drivetrain.

This technology is similar to a car transmission andeliminates the use of a conventional roller chain. Theshaft drive increases bike reliability and significantlydecreases bicycle operational costs. The internalizeddrive shaft protects the rider from damaged clothing, dirt, and grease and decreases the time each bicycleis out of service for repairs.

Active GPSEach Bike Nation bicycle has an integrated GPS

unit that will provide our software with real-time ridedata; it can also be used to alert service staff, via Geofencing, and alert operations staff when a bicycle hasgone out of a service area, as well as help to relocatestolen bicycles. The Bike Nation GPS technology is“active reporting,” meaning all data is retrieved inreal-time. This provides Bike Nation the ability toprovide users with information such as caloric burn, emission reductions, cost savings and other data.

Airless TiresThe bike tires are made of polyurethane compound,

or airless technology. Airless tires eliminate the possibil-ity for flats, blowouts and low pressure and increasesuser safety and bike reliability. In addition, airlesstechnology significantly decreases bicycle operationalcosts and decreases the time each bicycle is out ofservice for repairs.

Kiosk TechnologyBike Nation’s kiosk is a fully integrated self-service

system that has been purposely built for unattendedtransactions. The kiosk is manufactured from air-craft grade 10-guage rust proof aluminum and allelectronics and components are “tier one” industrialcaliber devices meant to withstand harsh outdoor envi-ronments. Bike Nation’s stations are solar poweredwhich means there isn’t a need for costly excavation, improvements, or prep work for the sites selected. All communications and transactions are conductedwirelessly through a private encrypted network.
