Handyman service takes care of customer needs

BREVARD COUNTY — Sometimes home projects are best left to the profes-sionals, and who is better to trust than a family-run company with your best inter-est at heart?

Hansen’s Handyman Services has been serving Brevard’s residents home mainte-nance and repairs since 2007. Greg Han-sen Sr. has been in the home repair busi-ness for more than 25 years, while sons Greg Jr. and Joseph have followed their father in his footsteps, as well as on house calls.

“[We’re] a small, Christian, family- owned and operating company,” said Rosemarie Hansen, vice president of Hansen’s Handyman. “I help run the office for my husband, Greg Sr. Nephew Joey does the pressure washing, and also involved in the family business are Annmarie and Claudia (daughter and daughter in law) who run the office.”

Hansen’s Handyman Services involve tile repair, pressure washing, sheet rock repairs and texture, counter tops and cab-

inets, screen repairs, interior trim work and sliding glass door repairs.

“At Hansen’s Handyman, we know the importance of finding a reputable compa-ny which does quality work,” Mrs. Hansen said. “One of the challenges we face run-ning a home improvement service in Bre-vard County is competing with the handymen who do not carry liability and worker’s compensation insurance.”

She added that the company has liabili-ty and worker’s compensation insurance. Customer service is an important factor for Hansen’s Handyman Services, and one of the most rewarding aspects, according to Mrs. Hansen, is getting to know its cus-tomers.

“We take our business seriously,” Mrs. Hansen said. “Our customer’s home is as important to them as it is to us.”

Hansen’s Handyman Services is located in Rockledge, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

For more information, call (321) 302-9441, email [email protected] or search for “Hansen’s Handyman Ser-vices” on Facebook.

erful and smaller at the same time because of the way that companies like Intel are able to miniaturize the computer chips and the processors. That uses nanotech-nology.

“We are designing new materials that uses energy more efficiently, and so that cuts down on waste and pollution,” Dr. Winkelmann explained. “In general, the growing use of nanotechnology is creat-ing millions of new jobs over the next 10 years or so, and so to be a part of that, the students need to learn about nanotech-nology now, so that by the time they grad-uate they can participate in these jobs.”

The NanoFlorida Research Conference has previously been held at major Florida universities such as the University of Cen-

tral Florida and Florida International University.

Dr. Winkelmann added that it is appro-priate for Florida Tech to play host to such a conference, as the school is heavily focused on engineering and science.

In 2004, Dr. Winkelmann and colleague James Brenner developed one of the first hands-on nanotechnology laboratory courses for freshman.

“I think attendees also will enjoy being able to meet with colleagues, share and learn what they’re doing, and to meet new people,” Dr. Winkelmann said.

The conference is open to the public, who can register online.

Registration fees before Oct. 5 are $50 for students and $100 for non-students. Regis-tration fees increases to $60 for students and $120 for non-students after Oct. 5.

New socialism misunderstoodA democratic socialist is not Marxist

socialist or communist. A democratic socialist is one who seeks

to restrain the self-destructive excess of capitalism and channel the government's use of our tax money into creating oppor-tunities for everyone.

Democratic socialists believe that the economy and society should be run dem-ocratically, to meet public needs not to make profits for a few.

If you're tired of the rich getting richer, consider socialism.

Book sheds Russian plightYou might think I'm nuts, but ever since

Trump got elected, I've had this feeling that he is going to hand our country over to Russia.

I found this book yesterday and I'm not the only one with that feeling.

Only this one spells it out. Trump is Putin's puppet to do all the

things he's doing to this country. The name of the book is House Of

Trump, House Of Putin, the untold story of Donald Trump and the Russian Mafia. Everyone needs to be informed.

Cable company unreliable Count yourself fortunate if you do not

have Spectrum for television service. It's over-priced and unreliable.

I called twice Sept. 9, because the pic-ture froze while I was watching the men's U.S. open tennis final.

The TV went blank. Then I tried my other two TVs and they

also were blank.

When I called the customer service hot-line, a recording told me "due to high number of calls, I cannot be attended to, please go to the website for further assis-tance, thank you and goodbye."

I felt like a dumb contestant on that for-mer show — "The Weakest Link," because that mean lady host, would say "you are the weakest link, good bye."

Spectrum treats its customers that live in northwest Palm Bay as if we are ugly and unwanted step children. Now is that a nice way to treat loyal customers ?

In ending Spectrum is run by a bunch of greedy and unreliable vultures.

Reader misses 'Sophie's' point In regards to my opinion that POTUS

should watch the movie "Sophie's Choice," this person proves that President Trump's supporters are not the sharpest tool in the shed.

He/she COMPLETELY misses my point.

My point went so far over their head it proves they did not give the subject any thought. It had nothing to do with immi-grants crossing the boarder or whether the president likes immigrants or not. Maybe if they knew what Sophie’s Choice was about, they would have kept their mouth shut and not embarrassed them-selves. The movie ONLY had to do with children being separated from their par-ents!

And as far as Trump saying nothing but positive things about immigrants, I would ask “what alternative world do you live in?”

I am with immigrants everyday and I have not talked to one that thinks Trump is their buddy.

Taxpayers footing hidden bill"At no cost to the taxpayers." WRONG!The front page article about $760,100

HUD grant grant is ALL tax dollars and MORE.

Not only is the grant all tax dollars, but added are the costs of the people who are paid to write, process, and follow up on grant applications. Then there is the costs of US HUD operations to process hun-dreds of grant applications involving a large team of persons ALL PAID BY TAX DOLLARS.

More than $850,000 is the TAXPAYER COST for these items.

The "free" culture is going to destroy America. Free phones, college, housing, and a myriad of other items are even more expensive to the working persons than retail.

Time and again we have seen proof that free stuff is destroyed by many of the

recipients as the items have no value of personal labor or investment by those who get them.

As a former volunteer firefighter and EMT, I fully support the purchase of equipment needed to save lives and prop-erty. The waste of money in getting things "at no cost to the taxpayers" is wrong.

"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity." Horace Mann 1859 at Antioch College.

Lagoon fix found onlineIf you look in a catalog named Whatev-

er Works, you can get Barley Straw Flakes to kill algae.

That''s on page 12. On page 13, there's a different product called Fountain Fresh.

If you could get it by the truck load it might fix the lagoon.

Solving the problemIf we are honest with ourselves, most of us

can relate to the shortcomings and vulnerabilities of others. Since writing

about the problems of increased opioid use and pain management, I have been contact-ed by many who do understand the need to address these issues. And, while we can’t solve all problems, doing something to assist a few is a step in the right direction.

I have written for many years about the need to develop an Aging Plan for Brevard. My efforts to generate real grass roots interest in doing so seem to fall on deaf ears. Does this mean that such a plan is not needed? Not at all. Timing is everything. Even though 50 percent of all Brevard County residents are over age 50, we seem quite happy to continue failing the six Ps: Proper Prior Planning Precludes Poor Performance. You can always add one more P, but I'll let you figure that out.

Another failing that can be attributed to poor planning is the ill timed act of our Commissioners to defund the Community Based Organizations program. Those of us who work with the elderly population will surely feel the negative consequences of this decision. For instance, several newly opened adult day cares in Brevard are in danger of closing simply because there is no seed money available from the County, United Way, or federal sources to help them attract customers. Whether we want to admit it or not, many of those needing daycare do not have the funds to pay the cost, which exceeds $50 per day. This is another reason why a certain portion of the County budget should be allocated to helping seniors.

Having said the above, we can at least do something on a small scale to help those in our community who suffer from poor pain management and ignorance concerning their ailment and treatment options. Consider for that you have lived in pain for years, taking over the counter medications when you could have received reliable medical advice. Why not become better informed by listening to others who have similar problems? Information is important, but only when obtained from controlled sources.

I think back to my own medical problems, and they are considerable. We have become a pill society and in some cases that can not be helped. But what if you have been misin-formed? You owe it to yourself to find information that can help you identify your problem. Think about my words today. Attending a support ground might not work for you, but I can assure you that failure to take any action will result in a status quo.

Pain is not fun, nor is poor heath. To become part of a pain management / fibromyalgia support group with Helping Seniors, call us at (321) 473-7770 or email [email protected]. As soon as we can identify the best group time, the support group will start — I hope you will join us.

BREVARD COUNTY — Brevard Humane Society is the proud recipient of a $25,000 grant from Florida Animal Friend, Inc., an organization whose mis-sion is to help end pet overpopulation.

Brevard Humane Society will utilize the grant by focusing its efforts on vital spay/neuter surgeries for low-income families and the community cats in Brevard Coun-ty.

“This award from Florida Animal Friend goes straight to the heart of our mission to reduce the homeless animal population in this area through proactive spay/neuter programs,” said Theresa Clif-ton, Executive Director for the Brevard

Humane Society. “Brevard Humane Soci-ety’s mission is to humanely end a cats’ ability to reproduce, improve their quality of life, and assist the cit-izens who serve as caregivers.”

The main source of fund-ing for Florida Animal Friend is the sale of its spe-cialty license plate. A portion of every plate sold goes directly to organizations across the state that offer free or low-cost spay/neuter services.

On an annual basis, Florida Animal

Friends’ Board of Directors review grant applications from non-profit

and municipal agencies across Florida, and

award grant fund-ing to those who

further its mis-sion to help save the lives of c o u n t l e s s

unwanted cats and dogs.

“With the num-ber of community

cats currently in Bre-vard County the need is compelling,” Clifton said.

“We are extremely grateful to the citizens who purchased these

license plates, the selection committee who awarded the grants — and to all the citizens who support our efforts. If you purchase a Florida Animal Friend plate, you are making a difference. This is a great opportunity and tremendous bene-fit to our community.”

In 2017, the Brevard Humane Society treated 1,109 cats through this life-saving fund, 542 of which were community, un-owned stray/feral cats.

Spay/neuter appointments will be avail-able beginning Monday, Oct. 15.

For more information or scheduling, call the Humane Society’s Low Cost Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic at (321) 636-3343 Ext. 206. Funds will be awarded to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-serve basis until they are exhausted.

“It took a lot of hard work by several dedicated people to not only organize the awards ceremony, but to compile the nominations, evaluate the entries and make the difficult determination as to which companies would receive the honor of ‘Business Champion of the Year,’” said Joseph Janson, Business Champion of the Year Event Committee Chair. “In light of the outstanding organizations that were nominated, choosing only one per catego-ry was not easy for our judges; they were all winners.”

MELBOURNE — Get ready to slide on the dance floor with your good socks on! The Rock & Roll Revue is coming to town with hits from the rock and roll era of the 1950s.

Tickets are $10 to the ‘50s-styled sock hop scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd.

“The Rock & Roll Revue is a new ensemble of the Melbourne Municipal Band,” said Art Martin, conductor. “With Swingtime we got a lot of requests for music of the ‘50s and so we saw a market for that. We gathered tunes, singers and a guitar to form this new band.”

Mr. Martin added that the Rock & Roll Revue will play music of the 1950s and ‘60s, and that the group fills a niche not seen in the Melbourne area.

“It’s a lot of fun to play,” he said. “I grew up in that era. It’s a real happy type of music.”

Audiences are invited to come in ‘50s dress attire. For those looking to spruce

up their dance moves, Laura Beers will offer lessons from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mel-bourne Auditorium, an hour before the dance is scheduled to start, for $5 payable to the instructor.

Vocalist Len Fallen will perform Doo-Wop music for the evening alongside Connie Maltby, Diana Sageser and Dave Hutson of the Swingtimers Vocal Trio.

Audiences can dance along to ‘50s and ‘60s favorites such as “The Great Pretend-er,” “All Shook Up,” “Wipeout,” “Sincerely” and “The Twist.”

The dance is BYOB and tables can be reserved in advance for eight or more people.

Seafood done right at Merritt Island's Bonefish Grill

BREVARD COUNTY — Whether it’s date night, a family get together or friends catching up over a dish of good food, Bonefish Grill on Merritt Island is the best dining experience just for the occasion.

Located at 795 E. Merritt Island Causeway, adjacent to the Merritt Square Mall, Bonefish Grill cooks up a good time, memorable dishes and a cozy atmosphere.

Bonefish Grill is primarily known for its seafood, but it also offers land-based options and a mouthful of fla-vors that range just outside the usual seafood season-ings.

The Merritt Island location opened five years ago and has since offered diners fresh catches provided by Bar Harbor Seafood and meals made from scratch daily.

“I’m a big fan of the snapper, and usually what I do with that is a mojo style, which I think pairs pretty well with it,” said Steven Vanslyke. Culinary Manager. “The mahi mahi is a pretty well-known fish. It seems like from a guests’ standpoint the fish that are more well-known seem to sell more than different fish.”

Some of the popular dishes featured at Bonefish Grill include the crab cake appetizer, crab crusted cod, salm-on and Lily’s chicken.

Bonefish Grill offers a variety of specials, which can change on a weekly basis and recently featured sword-fish and mahi mahi.

The restaurant is now open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and offers curbside delivery for to-go orders.

My guest and I visited one evening and found it to be a welcoming experience. We were seated near the kitch-en, which tempted us with the scents of delicious con-coctions.

For an appetizer, I ordered the Wagyu Beef and gin-

ger potstickers and my guest ordered the Imperial Dip.My potstickers arrived hot and covered in toppings

such as onions and scallions, which added a zesty lime flavor to it.

The Imperial Dip featured tender shrimp, bay scal-lops, lump crab, mozzarella and parmesan cheese served with house-made tortilla chips. The dish was a large, shareable portion that with the combination of seafood and cheese came out very flavorful.

My main course consisted of the half-pound Wagyu Beef Burger, which was served on a Hawaiian roll. The meat was juicy on a bed of lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese and a house-made special sauce that really brought the flavors all together.

The fries that came with my dish had the perfect ratio of crispness and potato filling. It was hard not to eat every fry on my plate as I got full from the cheeseburg-er.

My guest ordered the cobia piccata with shrimp, and said he enjoyed the way it was prepared, and that his side dish of potatoes au gratin was the perfect comple-ment to his fish.

Despite feeling too full to go on, my guest and I split a crème brulee, which is my favorite dessert. The custard was light and didn’t add to how full I felt from my burg-er.

Between the contemporary music, low lights, savory meal and good company, my experience at Bonefish Grill is one I mean to repeat.

Although located on the coast, one of the challenges Bonefish Grill faces is the variety of seafood places nearby.

“At the end of the day, seeing the reviews that come in and seeing the regulars come back and saying the food was really good tonight makes it a rewarding experi-ence,” Mr. Vanslyke said.

Bonefish Grill is open from 4 to 10 p.m. on Monday

through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

For more information, call (321) 453-3011 or visit www.bonefishgrill.com/locations/fl/merritt-island.

Orchestra kicks off season with ‘September Harvest’

MELBOURNE — The Melbourne Community Orchestra will present an abundant lineup of songs representing locations around the world when it kicks off its 2018-19 concert series this month.

The orchestra’s first program of the sea-son, “September Harvest,” is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 and Thurs-day, Sept. 27, at the Melbourne Auditori-um, 625 Hibiscus Blvd.

As with each of the orchestra’s concerts, admission to “September Harvest” will be free and no tickets are required.

“We have created a reputation of pre-senting [eclectic] programs….songs you recognize from other venues/genres such as cartoons or childhood memories, stan-dard repertoire, audience favorites, and hidden gems that I believe will become ‘new’ audience favorites,” said Mark Nel-son, conductor.

“With that in mind we ‘harvested’ many diverse ideas so we could present a ‘microcosm’ or a ‘pastiche’ of styles and selections that sums up our diverse pro-gramming ideas,” Mr. Nelson added.

Among other songs on the set list, the 50-member group of volunteer musicians will play Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhap-sody No. 2” – often recognized for its use in Bugs Bunny cartoons – and Amilcare Ponchielli’s “Dance of the Hours,” which was popularized in Disney’s 1940 animat-ed film “Fantasia” and also in Allen Sher-man’s early 1960s comic song “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.”

A few other pieces to be played that evening: American composer George Gershwin’s “Cuban Overture,” Johannes Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 5” and Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Egyptian March.”
