Two features of our Catholic Schools Week Celebrations are the Science Fairs and the Academic Showcase Nights. Originally begun as an International Night and Open House op-portunity decades ago, the Academic Showcases have evolved to provide our Lower School families with a night to showcase the typical work being done in the classroom as well as a chance to go “above and beyond” with displays and projects. Once again this year, families took advantage of the evening and brought extend-ed family and friends to our school to get a feel for the work being done in the lower grades. Don’t miss the photos on page four! The MS Science Fair is likewise an opportunity to display the spe-cial efforts of out middle school students. We add the dimension of outside judges who assess the work and award various places to the 7th and 8th graders. They are listed on page three. Thank you for your efforts to help your children participate in these dynamic special activities at The Atonement Academy! (See Dr. Lamascus’s article on page two for more about Catholic Schools Week.)

Do you love to write? Are you looking for an opportunity to show your creativity? Would you like to earn prizes for your skillful writ-ing? We have just the activity for you! We are looking for students who enjoy writing to enter national writing contests. Please note the submission due date to the school (Mrs. Wendtland or your English Teacher) and see details via the links below. (More essay con-tests next week!) Second Essay Contest: Upper School Only– Deadline May 10th http://jasna.org/programs/essay-contest/submission/ Jane Austen Society of North America, 2019 Essay Contest. In honor of the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's novel Northanger Abbey, we welcome essays on following topic: Northanger Abbey can be described as a book about books. There is, of course, the well-known
"defense of the novel,” but characters also discuss their reading habits, name specific novels, and even consider history books. In her works, Austen often makes use of fiction, poetry or plays, either explicitly or indirectly. Explore how she does this in Northang-er Abbey. High school students may bring in another Austen novel but are not required to do so; under-graduate and graduate students must bring in one or more additional novels. JASNA awards scholarships to winners in each of the three divisions: • First Place: $1,000 scholarship and free registration and two nights’ lodging for JASNA’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (Transportation to the conference is not provided.) • Second Place: $500 scholarship • Third Place: $250 scholarship Winners and their men-tors each receive a one-year JASNA membership. In addi-tion, each winner receives a set of Norton Critical Editions of Jane Austen's novels. The winning essays are pub-lished on their website.

Essay Contests!
Catholic Schools Week In the Mddle and Upper Schools we celebrated Vocations during the
week by writing and making thank you cards for all of the religious
who serve our community. We are grateful for the gift of their voca-
tions and all they bring to our community. (Photo of some of the cards
on the right). Students also made thank you posters for teachers in the
Middle and Upper Schools to show their appreciation for those who
live out their vocations as Catholic School Teachers. Some students
also helped prepare decorations for the Friday Luncheon (for staff
and faculty) by writing thank you notes on balloons and hearts that
were posted on the door of the faculty work room.
Middle School Student Council In recent weeks, the Middle School Student Council has been reinstated and will be sponsored by MS teacher
Miss Laura Oliveros. The purpose of this body is to promote community, fellowship, and service among Middle
School Students. The officers, who wrote compellingly of their reasons for wanting to serve on the Student
Council are:
7th Grade Girls: Isabella MacFadden
7th Grade Boys: Hunter Van Delden
8th Grade Girls: Emmanuelle Mefrige
8th Grade Boys: Mark Lane
We offer our hearty congratulations to these young men and women and look forward to hearing more about
their activities!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OUR NAME: We should always use “The” when referring to the name of the school as well as when referring to the name of the parish and church. “The Atonement Academy” and “Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church” honor Jesus Christ, who was sent to be THE ATONEMENT for our sins (a proper noun). When we do not add “The,” we refer to the common noun, which means “penitence” or “penance.”
