CRX is an outdoor based program with an emphasis on encouraging kids to have fun while exercising outdoors. CRX offers exciting and healthy activities over a seven-week period ranging from mountain climbing, canoeing, hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking, swimming and camping. CRX exposes participants to some of the most beautiful spots that Aroostook, Piscataquis, Hancock and Penobscot counties have to offer. CRX teaches the fundamental skills associated with every activity that is offered throughout this exciting summer program. CRX is for youths entering the 6th, 7th. 8th , 9th or 10th grades, and promotes exciting recreational opportunities throughout Maine. Week 3, Kayaking will allow kids entering 5th grade to participate. Upon registering, beginning May 1, 2015, participants will be provided a detailed itinerary and recommended gear list for each week’s activity. The Caribou Parks and Registration Department has the right to add, delete, or swap programs based upon registration demand. (Note the non-resident $75 annual fee does not apply to any CRX program) NOTICE OF PAYMENT POLICY FOR CRX PROGRAMS The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to provide outdoor programming for all ages. In an effort to insure the quality of the programs and insure good service, it is imperative that we have clear policies regarding registration payments. Hopefully the guidelines below will provide you with a clear understanding of policies when registering. 1 All programs will have a minimum number of registrants required. If that number is not fulfilled, the program or trip will be cancelled. 2 All registrations, prior to the deadline, must be accompanied by payment in full. No exceptions. 3 If the trip has to be cancelled due to lack of registration, anyone having paid will be refunded in full. 4 All deadlines will be scheduled within two (2) weeks of the actual program. If by the deadline the minimum required number of registrations is met, the registration will remain open. Persons wishing to register must come into the Wellness and Recreation Center to register and pay in full for the program.

5 ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS WITHIN 48 HOURS NOTICE OF SCHEDULED TRIP. There will be a 50% penalty on any refund request made within two-weeks of the scheduled trip. Thank you for your cooperation.

Week 1: Allagash Wilderness Waterway June 18-June 20 Cost: $ 75.00 resident

$100.00 Non-Resident

This two-night three-day paddling trip on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway will expose kids to the fun opportunities that we have right in our back yard! Canoes will be our mode of transportation for both people and gear. Kids will learn the basic skills associated with traveling with gear in boats, setting up tents, and staying dry in them should it rain. Top that all off with star filled nights around a campfire eating s’mores and telling stories. This trip will start at Michaud Farms, and conclude at the Allagash Boat Landing, stopping for two nights at the Muskie infested Allagash Falls Campsite, so bring your steel leader and favorite Muskie lures.

Week 2: Backpacking Baxter June 25- June 28 Cost: $75.00 Resident $100.00 Non-Resident

The inspiration from this brand new outing is to show participants opportunities for hiking, backpacking and fly-fishing in Baxter Park. This three night outing will take us into the backcountry of Baxter Park, where we’ll camp in lean-toes, fly-fish remote trout ponds and swim

in crystal clear waters. Participants will be required to have a large backpacking style backpack, follow a strict gear list and be expected to help carry group items. Fly-Fishing instruction provided, but participants are not required to fly-fish.

Week 3: Kayaking (Youth’s entering 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10th grade) July 6-July 9 Cost: $35.00 Resident $60.00 Non-Resident

Like being around water in the summer time? Or floating leisurely with a wind at your back, jumping in the water for a nice dip? Or maybe the thrill of a native Brookie tugging at the end of your line is more to your liking?... If you answered yes to any of these questions then you’ll

love this week! You will learn methods associated with flipping boats and getting back in and whether or not a kayak can truly be sunk!?

Week 4: W.O.W. @ Bar Harbor July 15 - July 18 Cost: $100.00 Resident $125.00 Non-Resident

Bar Harbor, Maine!!! This three-night four-day excursion will take in all the great things that Mount Desert Island has to offer. Adenvetures include mountain biking, hiking, ranger lead programs, swimming in the campground pool, watching a play/movie if the weather doesn’t cooperate, visiting Sand Beach and swimming in the ocean if you dare! In the evening we will stroll the downtown streets of Bar Harbor. Ranger lead programs, movies and or plays not included with above fee.

Week 5: Mountain Biking July 20 – July 23 Cost: $35.00 Resident $60.00 Non-Resident

By far the most popular week in CRX, is it because Aroostook County in busting at the seams with exciting places to bike, or is it because the Caribou Rec. has 5 Fuji Mountain Bikes free for use provided by the Caribou Parks & Rec Foundation. Participants

will experience a variety of different terrain and techniques required to ride efficiently. Have you ever changed a flat tire? Learn this and many other tricks as we visit two of our area bike shops. Rides will be from 3 to 17 miles in length. Participants should expect lots of swimming, and grilling!

Week 6: Baxter State Park I (entering 6th & 7th grade) July 29 – July 31

Week 7: Baxter State Park II (entering 8th , 9th & 10th. grade) August 5- August 7 Cost: $ 75.00 Resident $100.00 Non-Resident

Are you ready for a trip of your lifetime??? We guarantee you that every time you drive by Mt. Katahdin on I-95 you will never look at the mountain the same way again. This two-night three-day trip will test you in a way you have never been tested before. Back for its sixth year participants anxiously await this summer rite of passage. Upon arrival we travel to the famous ledge falls, a natural rockslide water fall where we spend the remaining afternoon basking in the sun and sliding down the rocks. The night caps off with a carb loading fest complete with spicy BBQ chicken and homemade pasta salad in preparation for 10 grueling hours of physical exertion. Upon completing our climb we

retreat to our campsite for an eating frenzy complete with campfire stories of aching muscles and sore feet. We con-clude our trip with a visit to Togue Pond Beach where we eat, swim, and reminisce about what a great trip.

Safety is the first principle of CRX programs and each individual activity is designed with that in mind. Highly trained and skilled members of Caribou Parks and Recreation Department’s staff, led by Neal Sleeper, will provide a student to instructor ratio of six to one or better. Registered Maine Guide, Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Lifeguard trained staff members shall direct each program. Each day will begin and end at The Rec., although meeting times and activity locations will vary and are subject to change. All registrants in weeks 1 & 3 must have passed an American Red Cross Beginners Level swimming or equivalent and present proof of swimming level at registration. Because of the physical demands, participants are strongly encouraged to take the necessary steps in readying themselves to endure exercise and nighttime relaxation! Explorers should expect lots of exercise on these trips. Program is restricted to the first 12 kids in excellent shape.

Historically when we arrive at the park with the van, we never use it again; all modes of transportation for the next three days, other than the trip home will be done in a non-motorized format, meaning, foot, water or bike. Program is restricted to the first 12 kids in excellent shape.
