Sound ~ Invoke emotion in children.

Rhythm• the beat of a poem. • Rhythm is set by the “stresses” or

“accents” in the words themselves.

“White founts falling in the Courts of the sun”

“Tell me not, in mournful numbers”

“.. A clickety fence, give it a lick, it’s a lickety fence, give it a lick, give it a lick, with a rickety stick, pickety, pickety, pickety pick.”

Rhyme• pattern of repetition. • Musical quality

“How soon hath Time, the subtle thief of youth, Stolen on his wing my three and twentieth year! My hasting days fly on with full career, But my late spring no bud or blossom shew'th.”

“Brown and furry, caterpillar in a hurry, take your walk, to the shady leaf, or stalk.

Alliteration

• One of many kinds of special effects of language in poetry to create a mood, add music, color, and texture, emphasize something, evoke an auditory or visual experience.

• Musical quality

not knotty is alliterative, but cigarette chase is not.

“The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew, The furrow followed free; We were the first that ever burst Into that silent sea.”

Windy Nights“Rumbling in the chimneys,Rattling at the doors,Round the roofs and round the roadsThe rude wind roars…”

Images•Put us in a picture•Enables us to imagine things according to our senses.

What Christmas Feels LikeThe tree’s aglow with colors of red, green, blue,

and orange, The heat’s toasty arms warmly embrace us. Presents under the Christmas tree Beg to be released from their bright, sparkling coats. Santa Claus cookies washed down with boiling, hot chocolate;Shouts of glee and appreciation; Hearts overflowing with love; This is what Christmas feels like.

Comparisons• Simile – “Belly button, like the balloons

that float at parties. I have a knot on my belly so I won’t go flat”

• Metaphor – Birds are flowers flying and flowers perched birds

• Personification – The wheat danced to the beat of the distant thunder.'

“The dog writes on the window with his nose”

“ I want to be famous the way a pulley is famous, or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular, but because it never forgot what it could do.”

Children’s Preferences in Poetry

•Children enjoy poetry that consists of animals, relatable experiences, and lots of humor. Preferred poems also must contain rhythm, rhyme, and sound. Poems that are in narrative form seem to be liked by various age groups.

•The two types of poetry that are most disliked by students are free verse and haiku. (Do you believe this to be true and why?)

•Sadly, poetry becomes less interesting to many children as they reach middle school and high school. (Any ideas why this may happen?)

Page 22: CRYSTAL ALCALA QIANA KING STEPHANIE THOMAS POETRY

What are some ways we can teach our children to appreciate poetry?

•Share poetry informally whenever you have the opportunity

•Have children act out or create a musical of various poems

•Regularly encourage children to write their own poetry
