Welcome!Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us for Meritus Healthcare Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Crystal Ball. As we celebrate 20 years of support for our community hospital, I am amazed to look back at the advances in medicine, the medical mysteries unlocked and the transformation of the healthcare delivery model.

Right now, we are working through a major transformation in the delivery of health care services. As baby boomers age, 10,000 people per day will qualify for Medicare at an average cost of $400,000 per individual during his/her Medicare years. Do the math and you will see that the numbers create new and unique challenges.

The Affordable Care Act shapes a new health care delivery system that ideally detects illnesses and diseases earlier for more cost-effective treatments and promotes keeping patients well once they leave the hospital. When care is necessary, hospitals are asked to deliver care in the right venue—be that an inpatient or outpatient setting. In short, the Affordable Care Act asks us to focus on the triple aim of health care: population health management, improved quality and cost reduction in health services delivery.

At Meritus Health, we are embracing change and preparing for the transformation that our organization will undergo in order to maintain health care services for our community. Our transformation includes an equal and balanced approach to: improving quality, ensuring patient safety, and delivering excellent care to every patient.

You are a partner in helping us meet the challenges we face during this transformative period. Your support ensures that we are ready to provide the best care, every time, for every patient today and for the generations to come.

Warmly,

Joseph P. Ross, CEO and PresidentMeritus Health

Lou Scally Lou has been the weatherman on WHAG-TV for as long as most can remember. But he also wears many other hats in our community. Lou hosts a morning talk show on WJEJ radio in Hagerstown. This gives Lou the opportunity to get an early start each day tracking the local weather.

Lou is also an active “Ham” radio operator and donates his time freely to countless community activities. All of this keeps Lou very busy, but he continues to give viewers in the Four-State Region the latest weather forecast each night.

This year the John R. Marsh Cancer begins a new chapter as more

and more patients beat cancer and become survivors. In our

community, more than 1,500 cancer survivors are living life to the

fullest, spending precious time with family and looking at cancer

through a rear view mirror.

The new STAR program helps cancer survivors by providing rehabilitation for bodies that have fought so hard, nutrition and diet counseling designed specifically for their individual care, and support for the many ways life has changed for them.

As a guest at this year’s Crystal Ball, you will be offered a unique opportunity to support the

John R. Marsh Cancer Center STAR ProgramYour gift celebrates how far we have come in the fight against cancer. Help our community continue to provide the very best in cancer care to patients and their families here in Washington County today and for generations to come.

Your Foundation — Here to HelpGifts to the Foundation at Meritus Medical Center are tax-deductible and have a tremendous impact on the care of our community. We are here for our patients and we are here for you.

Provides support for uninsured or underinsured patients who are unable to afford medical equipment, transportation, medication or other necessary items in order to recover, remain medically compliant and return to being a contributing member of the community.

Cancer patients have unique needs beyond what insurance and Medicare will cover. The Patient Emergency Fund provides needed resources to assist with co-pays, equipment, follow-up screenings, transportation and expenses that create undue burden on a patient already dealing with a significant diagnosis.

Subsequent cardiac events can be prevented if patients follow through with rehab plans but many do not because challenges for financial resources put rehab low on the list of necessary expenses behind food, heat and housing. The assistance fund provides any patient with the resources they need to attend.

This year the stimulation bike in Total Rehab Care spun its last turn. The replacement bike was purchased by contributions to the Foundation. Donors also provided voice recognition software for pediatric rehab patients, play equipment and a new walker for intensive care patients.

Educating Meritus Medical Center nurses is an investment in the very heart of our work. Each patient that encounters a nurse at MMC can be assured the highest level of care. Support provides training for oncology, trauma, domestic violence, pediatrics, rehab and more.

Many in our community require medication to live, maintain their quality of life, or prevent the unnecessary progression of a disease. The Medication Assistance Center is a free service that provides access to no-cost or low-cost prescription medication for uninsured residents of Washington County.

Donors to the Foundation purchased three training mannequins (two adults and one child) to be used for training hospital personnel and school nurses, ten trauma team members were trained and certified by the National Child Passenger Safety Board and thirty car seats were purchased for families in need.

Meritus Medical Center Emergency Services houses a certified Forensic Nurse Examination team able to respond to incidents of abuse and assault. Highly trained nurses respond to victims’ needs as well as evidence collection and testimony to aid in prosecution of offenders.

Congratulations to Meritus Medical Center’sDAISY AWARD WINNERS

The DAISY Award, was established to celebrate the extraordinary compassion nurses provide their patients and families every day. The award honors not only great clinical skill and leadership, but especially strong patient care and compassion. In April 2012, Meritus Health partnered with the DAISY Foundation. Nurses are nominated by patients, families, peers, and other healthcare providers. Each month, a nurse is recognized as a DAISY nurse. We appreciate the excellent care and dedication from:

VOLVO GROUP TRUCKS ISSHAPING ANOTHER FUTURE.

The Volvo Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks, buses, construction equipment, and drive systems for marine and industrial applications. The Hagerstown facility has been a strong corporate member of the community and a major economic driver in the region for more than 50 years. The site has been home to heavy-duty powertrain development and production since it opened as a Mack Trucks facility in 1961. The Volvo Group acquired Mack and the Hagerstown plant in 2001, and since then has invested more than $365 million to modernize the facility, including installing new production capability to produce the world’s cleanest burning heavy-duty diesel engines and advanced transmissions. The Hagerstown facility employed more than 1,400 people in December 2013.

The Judy

“The Judy” is a true original. This very simple drink captures her refreshing personality. The story goes that the drink was created by Mel at Nick’s Airport Inn located in Hagerstown, MD. A popular hangout for locals in Washington County. The drink is named after Judy Greenwald, a devoted and compassionate member of the community who was known for her vigorous, earnest and caring soul she shared with many.
