CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE NOW COMPLETED YOURPROGRAMME AND IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO EDGE HILL UNIVERSITY FOR THE CONFERRAL OF YOUR AWARD.

Please do take the time to read the information inthis booklet so that you and your guests are familiarwith what you will need to do to ensure that yourday runs smoothly. I must stress that it is importantthat you adhere to the deadlines outlined in this guideas failure to do so may result in you being preventedfrom attending your ceremony.

Additional guest tickets for the ceremonies havebeen allocated where possible. Unfortunately, I havenot been able to accommodate the requests of allthose that asked (please see ‘tickets’ for moreinformation). However, if you would like to shareyour ceremony with additional guests, the cere-monies can be viewed live at www.edgehill.ac.ukand a live screening of the ceremony will take placein E1 Faculty of Education (please see the ‘ceremonyscreening’ section of this guide for details).

CEREMONY SCREENINGAll ceremonies will be broadcast live on the internetat www.edgehill.ac.uk

Your ceremony will also be screened in E1, Facultyof Education. Tickets are not required for thisscreening and the venue will be filled on a ‘first comefirst served’ basis until capacity is reached. If youare relying on using this service it is advisable toarrive at Campus at least two hours in advance ofyour ceremony. Guests with babies or young childrenmay wish to watch the ceremony in E1, which is amore relaxed environment for young guests.

WHAT TO WEAR?Although you will be provided with your academicgowns on the day, you should also prepare asuitable outfit to wear underneath your robe. Thereisn’t a specific dress code other than thatgraduands, and guests, should dress smartly andas for a formal occasion. For practical reasons, it isrecommended that all graduands wear garmentswith buttons on the front as this will make it easierfor your academic hood to rest. Graduands shouldalso bear in mind that you will have to walk upand down steps in order to process and thereforeit is recommended that suitable footwear is worn.Alternative arrangements will be made for thosewho cannot use steps, providing that this wasindicated on the application form. If you did notindicate this on your application form you mustcontact the Assessment & Awards Team immediatelyto advise them on 01695 657390.

TICKETSTickets for yourself and, if applicable, your guestswill be issued at your registration on the day.

Those graduands who ordered 1-2 guest ticketshave automatically been allocated these. For thosegraduands who have ordered in excess of twoguest tickets; an email has now been issued to allstudents to confirm the allocated number of guesttickets. Please check your email account (the onethat you registered through) for details.

POST CEREMONY REFRESHMENTSFollowing on from your ceremony there will be acomplimentary drinks reception in The Hub whichis just a few moments walk from the ceremonyvenue (directions can be found on page eight). Thereception will last for approximately one hour andwe do hope that you, and your guests, join us tocelebrate your special day.

REGISTER(COMPULSORY) Registration on the day of the ceremonieswill take place in the Faculty of EducationFoyer. It is vital that you register your attendance on the day so that Edge Hillstaff are aware that you have arrived and can confirm your place in the seating plan.

Tickets to enter the ceremony will beissued at registration.

Faculty of Education Foyer Registration Points will open 2 hours priorto your ceremony and the queue will close45 minutes prior to the ceremony.

If you are not in the queue at least 45 minutes prior to your ceremony you will not be allowed to enter the theatre.

Graduation Day: Itinerary

COLLECT ACADEMIC DRESS(COMPULSORY) Wippells staff will be available to provide youwith your academic dress and help youput the garments on. It is vital that youcollect your gown from Wippells in goodtime for the ceremonies. Graduands willnot be permitted to enter the ceremonywithout the appropriate academic dress.

Business School Wippells will be available from 8:00am on the day – you should arrive2½ hours before your ceremony time

Robes must be returned no later than7:30pm.

Tempest Photographers will be availableto take your individual portrait and photographs of you and your guests. Staffwill be on hand to answer any queries. Youcan view the packages that are availableat:www.tempest-graduations.co.uk.

Faculty of Education 1st Floor Available from two and a half hours priorto your ceremony. Don’t worry if you donot have time prior to the ceremony as thephotographers will also be available until1 hour after the last ceremony.

Please note that the Photography Studios are busiest in the hour before the ceremony starts.

YOUR BELONGINGSPlease ensure that any bags that you bring can fitcomfortably on your knee/chair. Belongings mustbe removed from all aisles in the venue to ensurethat they do not obstruct those graduating/processing.

CERTIFICATESCertificates are not issued at the ceremony. If you havenot already received your certificate it will be postedto you, at your home address, by the end of January.

GUESTSGuests’ seats will not be numbered and guests willbe allowed to choose seating in the theatre on a‘first come first served’ basis. Seats will be reservedfor guests (within your ticket allocation) who are inwheelchairs or with special requirements providingthat this was indicated on your application form – ifany of your guests have special requirements butyou did not indicate this on your application formyou must contact a member of the Assessment &Awards Team on 01695 657390.

Please Note: Dogs are not allowed on campus, withthe exception of guide dogs.

MOBILE PHONESYou will be asked to ensure that all mobile phonesand pagers are switched off so that they do notinterfere with the ceremony. If you had planned totake photographs with your phone, please arrangefor an alternative method of photography as even ifyour phone is on silent mode it may interfere withthe equipment used by our technical support staff.

DURING THE CEREMONYYour graduation ceremony is a formal occasion andtakes place in an intimate venue, in which soundcarries very easily. Therefore we ask that all graduandsdisplay respectful conduct, befitting the occasion,whilst your fellow graduands are being presentedfor their awards.

YOUR ROLE IN THE CEREMONY When you collect your tickets on the day, you willbe advised of a specific seat that has been reservedfor you to sit on based on what you have studiedand what your surname is. It is extremely importantthat you do sit on the seat that has been reservedfor you (staff will be on hand to ensure that you knowwhere your seat is and also to check that all studentsare in the correct seat). When all students and guestsare seated and the ceremony is about to begin,everyone will be asked to stand; there will then be afanfare of trumpets and the ceremony will formallyopen with the entrance of the Academic Procession.

The ceremony will begin with an opening addressand this may be followed by the presentation of anhonorary award. Following on from the openingspeeches ushers will indicate for the first student tobe presented to the Dean. The first student’s namewill be announced by the Dean and this student willprocess across a red carpet, be greeted by thePresiding Officer and then return to their seat - eachsubsequent student will follow. The Dean will knowto announce your name when you are presented asthe Dean has a pre-prepared list of the seat you arein, this is why it is so important for you to sit in thecorrect seat.

There will be a number of ushers whose jobs are tomake sure that you know exactly what to doduring the ceremony and they will be on standby topoint you in the right direction if you want to knowanything during the ceremony.

Toward the end of the ceremony, the PresidingOfficer will ask all students to stand so that youraward can be conferred. After this, your formal rolein the ceremony is over and you can sit backand relax!

What To Do When You Are Presented

Following your ceremony therewill be a complimentary drinksreception in the Hub for 1 hour.

1. Prior to the start of the ceremony, an Usher will demonstrate exactly what you need to do and the path you should follow when you are presented.

2. Following the opening speeches, Ushers will indicate for you to stand and guide you to line up in preparation of your presentation.

3. Shortly before you are due to be presented the Lead Usher will ask you to confirm your name to ensure that you are in the correct order. Please retain your ticket. Do not give your ticket to the Ushers.

4. When the Lead Usher indicates for you to do so, you should walk all the way to the edge of the red carpet and wait.

5. Once the Dean announces your name, you will then process across the red carpet to the Presiding Officer, who will greet you and shake your hand.

6. You will then continue to walk along the red carpet and return to your seat (following the path demonstrated by the Usher prior to the start of the ceremony).

NB Please visit the toilet before entering the theatre. Once the theatre doors close, 30 minutes before the ceremony starts, you will not be permitted to exit until the ceremony finishes.
