Software & Sensitivity

The new CB-6200 board has a USB connector for connection and programming the control via PC. The actual connection is RS-232 with USB emulation. As such, a driver is included with the downloadable software CSWin32. Upon connection with the control, Windows will recognize a new device. It will query for a driver. Choose to manually select the driver, and use the mchpcdc.cat driver downloaded.

A new version of our software, CSWin64, is under development. When available it will be posted in the downloads section of coiltek.com.

You can adjust the sensitivity of your unit by turning the dial of the sensitivity potentiometer on the CB-6200 board clockwise to increase sensitivity and counterclockwise to lessen. A 5 degree turn is all that is necessary for most applications.

The CS-6200 is an ultrasonic transducer system integrated with powerful processing for use in industrial settings for slack loop control or diameter measurement. It might be used in other applications where position measurement may be incorporated for control purposes. The range of the control is quite flexible – it can detect targets as far away as 6 meters to as close as 160 millimeters. It is easily set up to provide an analog signal proportional to target position by simply pressing buttons at the extrema points of the desired range. It may also be set up using Coiltek's CSWin software via the card's USB port. The signals generated are 0-10 VDC or 4-20mA (slope inversion available). Also, open collector outputs toggle on near and far setpoints. A third open collector output may be set anywhere within the control range with CSWin.

The ultrasonic measurement is straightforward. A Burst of acoustic energy – 16 or more cycles at about 50 kHz – is broadcast toward the desired target. The transducer is switched to receive mode to await the echo return. The time between transmit and receive is very accurately measured. Since the speed of sound in air is fairly constant, the target's position is calculated and converted to a proportional analog signal.

The cable connections on the new CS-6200 board are simple and easy-to-use. Simply connect the coaxial cable to the detachable connector (A) and connect it to the board (B).

Manual Set-UpOur new set-up procedure is as easy as ABC

1) Ensure that the two pin jumper is in place. Without it, you will not be able to program the u n i t m a n u a l l y . To prevent changes to your set-up, simply remove it.

2) To begin manual set up, press the SETUP/ENTER button [A]. The lights above S2 and S3 will begin to blink.

DIP Switch Functions, Cont.Master/Slave

SW 8, M/S, is a rarely required but occasionally useful feature. It sets the control as either Master (default) or Slave. As the latter, the control will only fire after a Master control daisy chained to it fires. This sets up a multiplexed control pair. It’s useful when two loop controls are in very close proximity and cross-talk becomes an issue.

Presets

The graphic below shows the binary address scheme for programming and retrieving programmed presets manually. The switch setting in place at the time of set-up dictates where that particular set-up is stored. Removal of the jumper from W1, as with any of the set-up parameters, makes the preset(s) programmed non-volatile.

If you frequently switch between several presets, you may want to consider integrating a 3CPO accessory into your unit. This 3-position selector switch allows for immediate , remote access to presets. Please also see the section on programming your presets with our CSWin software.

The CS-6200 set-up establishes a control range in which the analog output (either 0-10 VDC or 4-20 mA) swings. It is defined by the near and far limits set below.

Place a target at the far point of the control range (farthest from the sensor) and press the S3 button [B]. The light over S3 will stay on when the calibration point is registered.To begin manual set up, press the SETUP/ENTER button [A]. The lights above S2 and S3 will begin to blink.Place a target in the control range at the near end (closest to the sensor) and press the S2 button momentarily [C].

DIP Switch FunctionsThe settings of the DIP switches dictate how the control behaves. The system is capable of storing and instantly retrieving a number of behaviors as presets. The functions of the individual switches are labeled in the graphic below.

The first three settings, for OFFSET bias, are covered in another section. The PRESET switches allow selection of 8 different stored control behaviors. In short, the PRESETs are simply storage for different desired loop control behavior. PRESET storage is discussed at length in another section of this manual.

Slope Inversion

Switch 7, labeled SL/INV inverts the output slope. The default (SW7 OFF) is a 0V (4mA) signal at the FAR position of the control range. The signal increases as the target gets closer to the sensor. This behavior is associated with the control of machinery that feeds a process, such as a decoiler. With SW7 ON, the output is inverted such that 0V (4mA) is generated at the near point of the control range and increases as the target draws away from the sensor. This behavior is requisite for rewinding or other take-up equipment. The setting of the SW7 dictates how the control will react in a given PRESET when the set-up procedure is performed.

W1 jumper is missing, making manual set-up impossible for this board. Please make sure W1 jumper is in place before attempting to use this feature.

Extended Upper LimitAnother important feature on all new boards shipped after 8/10/14 is the ability to set an extended upper limit for the relay. This feature allows the user to set the near relay higher than the original near point of the loop, as described on the previous page. This increases the amount of full-speed feed time, hence minimizing nuisance stops.

To use this feature, press the S2 and S3 buttons simultaneously. This causes the unit to enter a near relay setup mode, indicated by LEDs above S2 and S3 turning on. Place an object at the new near point you would like to set, and press S2 and S3 together a second time. The LEDs above the buttons should go out.

To cancel the near relay set-up, press the S1 button, returning the unit to normal parameters.

Ensure that the lockout jumper (W1) is in place before you attempt to use this feature.

Upgrading to the CB-6200When upgrading your system from a CB-6100 board to a CB-6200 card disconnect ground of incoming power (120 or 240 single phase). Secure to the subpanel. The CS-6200 system does not require connection to ground.

If you have an older loop control system with a 3CPO accessory and are upgrading to the new CB-6200 card, please note the following changes:

1) A Reset button is no longer necessary. Presets are immediately available using a remote 3 position selector switch, which makes a Reset button obsolete.

2) The above may result in the need for a new connection harness, as the pin-out has changed.

If you should need assistance in reconfiguring your 3CPO for use with your new card, please contact us and we will walk you through the process.

Notes on Set-UpWith the Jumper in place on W1, manual programming can be performed. Set up for any of the 8 (labeled 0-7) presets is immediate and non-volatile once the jumper is removed from W1. Note the three program preset switches address 8 total presets in binary fashion. The first five preset selections are shown on the next page.

With computer set up, you can change all the presets. The new CB-5501M mainboard is compatible with the previous version of our CSWin software, although a few functions are not available, such as summing, scaling, RS232, output, and Hi/Lo Range.

With the software, you can overwrite manually set presets. You may communicate with the board whether the W1 jumper is in place or not. If you use the USB/CSWin set up we recommend leaving the jumper off.

USB activity is visually apparent, D4 & D5 blink alternately when active on your computer.

USB ports may be assigned any of a number of COM numbers. You can find out which COM number you’re addressing by going to Window’s Device Manager after hooking up to the board. It may be just as fast to try different COM numbers from the SETUP menu until the green Online light comes on in the lower left-hand corner. CSWin has been updated to allow 8 COM ports to be selected.

Installation Notes

When PRESETs 1, 2, and 3 have been validly programmed, the remote (or DIP switch) selection immediately calls up the setting. There is no need to reset the processor.

Set-Up Notes, Cont.A Word About Integrating the CS-6200/6201 with DC Drives

The CS-6200 system has an optically isolated signal output (both 0-10 VDC and 4-20 mA). It may be safely used to control all manner of drives, including inexpensive DC drives which have -90 or -180 VDC common references for speed control. It is imperative, when using such drives, that the common reference terminal 3 is not brought in contact with any earth ground. The board, and possibly the drive, will be damaged and the warranty void. If there is a possibility of this occurrence, we suggest procuring a signal isolation module.

Relay Installation

It is often necessary to employ a dry contact which will actuate at near or far limit. Three open-collector transistor outputs are available. Typical relay wiring is shown below. Depending upon the current required for your relay(s), the supply often provided with Coiltek® systems may not be sufficient to properly drive your selected relay coil. Checking your current requirements is advised.

OffsetOffset bias is available and is useful in some situations. The graph at right explains what occurs when offset is employed. The standard output of the CS-6200/CS-6201 is shown in the foreground. The graph behind it shows a loop control with 25% offset. Here, the output of the control jumps to 2.5 volts as the stock loop crosses the long-loop threshold and enters the control range. This discontinuity in the output may be helpful when the following machinery must start rapidly. Since the working slope is reduced, this feature is often employed with stamping operations with long feed progressions. Straightener ‘wow’ is reduced.

Offset can also be set up remotely by connecting via USB to a computer running CSWin. Using the software, you can set up OFFSET in single digit percentages up to 50%.

To employ offset, set the desired percentage following the DIP switch settings shown in the figure below. Follow the m a n u a l s e t - u p procedure on page 1 of this manual.
