As of recently, CS has been appointed foran engineering project researching the techni-cal feasibility of reusing an old nickel smelteras combustor for H2SO4 production. In thecourse of the project CS performed exten-sive CFD modelling, taking into considerationthe following facts and constraints: l No modifications on the smelter

are possiblel The combustion chamber is to

be water cooledl Top down firing with narrow

and short combustion zonel Long distance from combustion

zone to flue gas outlet with two90° angle changes in flow direction

l Substantially less flue gas flow compared to former smelter design

Despite the technically challengingsituation CS managed to come upwith specific modifications to thecombustion system to enable forkeeping the plant in operation foran entirely different purpose. Thisswitch of ope ration is of vital im-portance for the plant’s operator asone understands by having a look atthe decreasing nickel price and theeconomical situation that results.

Based on these findings the decisionwas taken to reconstruct the nickelsmelter for H2SO4 production.

As can be seen from the image below thede sign modifications enable for a short andcompact evaporation zone as well as forshort flame and fast ignition due to high tur-bulence.

Additionally the design modifications yield analready at the beginning homogenous SO2

con centration, as can be seen in the imagebelow.

CS Combustion Solutions proudly announces the successful entrance to theBrazilian market. Due to the experience and business networking of CS’s partnerMB CONSULTORES E CATALISADORES – H2SO4 contacts to different Brazilian operators and EPC contractors could be established. CS seized the opportunitythat arose from this situation to start making a name for itself in Brazil.
