March 2010For so many, the past 18 months has been a time of great struggle. For the board and staff of Central Scholarship, it also has been a time of great uncertainty and enormous challenges.

The stunning meltdown of the fi nancial markets left us wondering whether our donors would be in a position to support us. We saw an unprecedented increase in the demand for our funding. Student applications more than doubled in 2009 from 1000 to just under 2200. With government budgets shrinking and the student loan market tightening, the goals of our students were in jeopardy.

This annual update on our activities should be titled “CSB’s Gratitude Report,” because our donors came through despite any fi nancial diffi culties they were experiencing. CSB committed $1 million to 200 students in 2009.

That being said, we cannot rest on our successes. We turned away over 600 highly-qualifi ed students in 2009 and applications for funding in 2010 are running well ahead of last year. The community has partnered with CSB for 85 years to make postsecondary education accessible for low-income students. With your continued commitment, we will be able to help these talented young men and women, the future leaders of our community, achieve their dreams.

In partnership with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and the France-Merrick Foundation, CSBstarted a scholarship fund for vocational training in 2008. This fund has helped students like David to get back on their feet and fi nd jobs that are sustainableand well paying. We admire David’s hard work andpassion and we are so proud of his new position as an instructor at Allstate Career School.

In an interview with the Baltimore Sun, R. Dwayne Betts said “I’ve got to be more than just a kid that went to the penitentiary.” From his success, it is easy to see that

he has become so much more. Arrested for carjacking atage 16 and sentenced to nine years in prison, Dwayneseemed to be on a path that so many travel. Dwayne wasable to get off of that path through hard work and a sup-port system that believed in him.

While in prison, Dwayne worked closely with prison staff tohone his writing skills. He began writing essays and keep-ing a journal and found it to be an outlet for the emotionshe was feeling. When Dwayne completed his sentence, he turned his love of writing into a published book and

Throughout the nation, many parents are facing the same challenges that Lauren Haggerty’s parents faced. Lauren was already in school at

the University of Maryland College Park studying tobecome a doctor when her younger sister graduatedhigh school. The strain of two college tuitions was extremely diffi cult for Lauren’s family as it is forso many families. Lauren told CSB, “I work hard inand out of school to help my parents fi nance my education, but I am always faced with the concernthat it will not be enough.”

In partnership with the Joseph and HarveyMeyerhoff Family Charitable Funds, CSB is proud to offer scholarships to middle-income students like

At CSB, we see so many families like the Eichners, families with the passion and drive who are willingto put in any amount of effort so that their childrencan thrive in school. We see so many students like Solomon, who are so talented but who still needfi nancial support to begin fulfi lling their dreams.

Partnering with the Lessans Family, we at CSB are overjoyed to take some of the fi nancial burden off of Solomon’s family. Since 1995, the Lessans FamilyScholarship has helped 106 students (as of July, 2009) go on to be artists, attorneys, computer engineers, doctors, business majors and scientists. We hope that without the pressure of determining how to pay for his education Solomon can focus on becoming a world class pianist, and his mother can relax and enjoy the music.

Mary Foley is a proud mom with two children in college. Like so many moms, Mary is incredibly unselfi sh and has

done all she can do to ensure her kids get a greateducation. While her kids are studying, Maryis also embarking on her own career and, withfunding from CSB and the Kassap Family, Maryhas the fi nancial support to continue down her path to becoming a teacher.

After serving for seven years in the Navy, Mary was medically discharged in 2006. Mary was nine years short of being able to retire so she soughtthe help of the Veteran’s Rehabilitation Program to begin a new career. and culturally competent to work with Latinos. As the population of Latinos grows in Baltimore, the need for capable and trained mental health professionals will grow, further increasing the need for these skilled positions.

In 2008, the Stulman Foundation partnered with CSB to create a scholarship program designed specifi callyfor bilingual mental health students, students likeAlfredo. In his scholarship essay, Alfredo writes “I hopeto make access to mental health services less taxing and stigmatizing by serving those in the community with a respectful and culturally competent approach.” Since its inception the Stulman Foundation has served students that are working towards their master’s inmental health fi elds so that they can make a difference in the underserved communities in Baltimore.

Chantel Morant has wanted to make a differencein her community since grade school. Inher time at Clark Atlanta University she has

fl ourished in working towards making that goal a reality. Chantel called her sophomore year the“experience of a lifetime” and her experiences that year will shape her future.

Chantel is active in many clubs and organizations at her University. Because of her hard work, she receivedthe prestigious honor of introducing Atlanta MayorShirley Franklin at the 24th annual Mayor’s MaskedBall hosted by the United Negro College Fund. Chantel did so well that she has since been invited to speak at several other engagements.

2009was an interesting year at Central Scholarship Bureau. We received more applicants than everbefore and our staff had the arduous task of

deciding between many talented and deserving students. In the end, we were able to award scholarships to 200 students who are currently studying to be teachers, doctors, artists and many other professions. In 2009, we committed $1 million to students in grants and interest-free loans.

In the challenging year that 2009 was, it is important to note thateducation made a difference. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average unemployment rate for the US ended at above 10%, whilethe unemployment rate for those with a bachelors degree or higher was only 4.1%.

Higher education is a sustainable way to helpindividuals and families get out and stay out of poverty. At CSB, we are making a difference everyday in the livesof our students and the community as a whole and it is because of our partnerships in the community that we are able to do so.

PROFILES IN COMPASSION AND LEADERSHIP: CSB’S PAST PRESIDENTS

A TRIBUTE TO CSB PAST PRESIDENT: CATHARINE S. HECHT

Catathaha (Kitty) S. Hecht was born in 1915 and passed away in July 2009, leaving a legacy of dedication to andririnne (fi nancial support for educational causes with particular emphasis on Central Scholarship (CSB), Goucher College, fi i land Johns Hopkins University. During her presidency of CSB from 1968 to 1970, the organization supported the

education of 104 students with fi nancial aid. Kitty and her husband, Isaac, strongly believed that education was a key toupward mobility and achievement. They wanted to support capable individuals who needed fi nancial help in order tobecome educated and contributing members of our society. To that end, CSB was a focus for them. In a speech at the end of Kitty’s two-year term as President of CSB, she said, “I am addicted to Central Scholarship - its work and ideals.” Inaddition to giving of herself as President and board member for many years, Kitty and Isaac were long-time generousdonors to CSB. Kitty and Isaac left a true legacy to CSB by creating the “Isaac and Catharine S. Hecht CSB Educational Fund” from their philanthropic fund held by The Associated Jewish Community Federation and from their estate.

For 85 years, the extraordinary commitment of these individuals inspired the community to invest in the futures of young men and women.
