2020-2021 Kitts Dance Team Tryouts

Carrizo Springs High School is gladly to accept your candidacy for the 2020-2021 Kitts Dance

Team. Before trying out, all candidates must meet the following criteria based on the

constitution (only those who are selected will receive a copy of the 2020-2021 Constitution).

Article V – Qualifications Students are eligible to try-out for the dance team and manager positions providing the following criteria are met:

A. Must have passed all subjects the six weeks prior to try-outs. B. Must not have failed more than one six-week grading period.

C. Must be a current full-time student of Carrizo Springs Consolidated Independent School District.

D. Must be physically capable to participate in required activities.

E. Daily attendance must comply with campus policies as related to absences and/or tardy. Any student not fulfilling state attendance policy (90%) at any school for the previous and current semester will not be eligible to try-out (any extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by designated campus personnel).

F. Any school fines or debts incurred must be paid in full before a student is eligible for try-outs.

G. The student will be responsible for meeting all financial obligations (i.e. shoes, camp wear, make-up, bloomers, warm-up suits, tights, pom-poms, uniforms and hair accessories.)

H. Any student referred to the principal’s office or school detention more than once during a school year will be ineligible for tryouts.

I. Any student referred to ISS more than once during the school year will be ineligible for tryouts.

J. Any student referred to DAEP during the school year will be ineligible for tryouts.

K. If student quits for reasons not deemed valid by sponsor or principal, and then she/he may not tryout again for one consecutive year.

Section B – Candidate Approval Dance team members/manager candidates will be limited to those approved by use of the following criteria: 1. Candidates must have passed all classes for the most recent grading period plus the current six weeks with a 70 or higher. 2. Candidates must have exhibited appropriate conduct in the classroom and other school and community settings in accordance with the Carrizo Springs CISD Student Code of Conduct. 3. Citizenship and discipline records for each candidate will be considered for a measure of the conduct standards. Any student that has been assigned to DAEP will not be allowed to tryout. 4. Any current dance team member who has resigned or been removed from the squad the previous year will not be allowed to tryout.

Article VI – Tryouts Carrizo Springs High School and dance team sponsor/coach will coordinate, administer, and interpret all aspects of the dance team tryouts. All tryout results are declared final. No exceptions!

Section A – Required Forms

Prior to tryouts, all candidates must have a physical examination by a medical doctor certifying they are capable of performing the rigorous activities required of dance team members

o Report Card – must show 1st semester and current schedule grades. (Required counselor signature)

o Payment Agreement Form Section B – Clinic 1. A pre-tryout clinic will be conducted during the week preceding the dance team tryouts. 2. Attendance at the clinic is mandatory for each candidate for the preparation of tryouts unless attending an academic related school activity/event. 3. The pre-tryout clinic will include specific instruction for the routines and skills to be evaluated by judges during the selections process. 4. Any candidate not present at a clinic session is responsible for learning any missed material on his/her own time from other candidates rather than from clinic leaders or the campus coaches.

Section C – Guidelines 1. All candidates must be physically present before the judges and able to compete in order to be eligible. 2. Each candidate will be judged on their physical abilities and appearance. Each candidate will perform a dance, a series of kicks (high, elevator, around-the-world, and fan kicks), and both splits (left and right). 3. The sponsors will be allowed in the warm-up and holding areas prior to and during the tryout. The sponsor may be present in the tryout session. 4. During tryouts, an administrator should be present in the tryout room. 5. An appointed staff member(s) from Carrizo Springs ISD will tally the scores. The sponsor will not tally scores. The sponsor may tally the teacher evaluation scores. 6. Dance team candidates will be prohibited from using any type of communication device during the designated campus tryout hours and MUST be turned into sponsor/principal for holding. In the event of an emergency situation, staff will be responsible for establishing communication with the parent by use of information provided on the student’s emergency card. 7. The tryout will be closed to the public. Parents will be prohibited from having contact with any candidate(s) during designated campus tryout hours with the exception of an emergency situation. Failure to comply may lead to disqualification.

Section D – Judges Tryouts will be conducted in a closed setting with minimum of two judges and maximum of three judges who will be used for the selection process.

1. The building principal or a designee will make arrangements for the judges from a list supplied by the Dance Team Sponsor/Coach.

2. The judges for the tryouts will have no affiliation with Carrizo Springs ISD. Judges will be familiar with Dance Team qualifications.

3. The judges will be briefed about definitions for each of elements in the tryout rubric. 4. All judges’ scores and decisions are FINAL. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Section E – Scores

1. Dance Team scores will be a combination of the judges’ scores(60 points max, teacher evaluations (30 points), and GPA (10 points).

a. Judges score on the following: i. Kicks (10pt) – Technique, execution, difficulty, coordination

ii. Splits (10pt) – Execution (left, right, or both), coordination, technique iii. Crowd Appeal (10pt) – neatness, facial expression, energy, confidence, enthusiasm iv. Technique (10pt) – precision, arm placement, movement/transition, turns, jumps, leaps, v. Memory (20pt) – how well you remember the routine.

2. Dance Team candidates will be judged on appearance, 3. Evaluations done by all of the candidate’s current teachers in the areas of citizenship, attitude towards

teachers and students, and work habits. 4. Request for tryout records for your child will have to be made by parent/guardian one week after tryout

period. (Note: Overall scores can be given but not a break down per judge).

Section F – Tryout Attire 1. Each dance team member candidate must provide his/her own shorts, shirt, undergarments, and shoes. Black or blue shorts and a white shirt (without a design) will be worn for tryouts. Absolutely no dance team items may be worn, i.e. dance team shorts, dance team shoes, etc. 2. Hair must be worn in a ponytail with hair secured away from the face. Hair that is too short to be worn in a ponytail shall be worn “half-up” and away from the face. Only white bows will be allowed. 3. No jewelry other than stud earrings can be worn. 4. No nail polish.

Article VIII – Responsibilities of Dance Team Members Being a member of the CSHS Dance Team program is an honor, a responsibility, and a privilege. Due to the level of the visibility of campus dance team members, it is imperative that squad members set a good example for peers. All squad members are required to know the words to their school song. All squad members should sign, understand, and adhere to the district code of conduct.

Section A - Leadership Roles A captain, co-captain, and lieutenant captain will be selected for the leadership roles of the organization. They will work closely with the sponsors for the duration of their membership. 1. All officers (Captain, Co-Captain, and Lt. Captain) will be required to commit time for additional responsibilities for the dance team program and will be expected to be a positive role model, serving as a community ambassador of the program. Captains will be responsible for the following:

To be sure the entire squad does warm-up exercises at practice and before games.

Must be knowledgeable of all dances, routines and pre-game activities in order to instruct the other dance team members.

Must lead and keep the dance team members united as a group by setting the example as a role model.

Work closely with the sponsor in planning dance team activities.

Report all conduct, complaints, uncooperative dance team members or problems concerning the squad to the sponsor.

Act as hostess for home games in welcoming visiting dance teams.

Make sure all rules and regulations are upheld.

Must start routines and activities at games.

Must lead the squad in the responsibilities of loading, transporting, and unloading of equipment before and after all pep rallies, games and trips.

Must organize and distribute all practice schedules and agenda with squad members and make sure all others know of dates and times of events, meetings, and practices scheduled by the sponsor.

Select uniform for events/activities with sponsor approval.

Demonstrate a positive and motivating attitude at all times.

Be dependable and cooperative with the sponsor and all squad members.

Keep communication open and flowing with all squad members.

2. Candidates with the three highest scores and who have served as a member of the dance team for 2 consecutive years will be selected as Captain, Co-Captain, and Lt.-Captain.

Springs High School. I understand that if elected, he/she must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by

the advisor/sponsor/coach and the principal of Carrizo Springs High School. The candidate shall be present for

all practices and games. I have read the rules and regulations and understand that the violation of any of these

rules may lead to temporary or permanent suspension from the squad. I understand that all forms must be

completed by March 25, 2020 or my child will not be allowed to tryout. I understand that my child must attend

all practices and tryout sessions, or my child will not be considered for a dance team position.

I understand that my daughter/son will be evaluated by qualified judges, and we agree to abide by the

decision of the judges.

I understand that I am accountable for all costs as stated in the dance team constitution.

I understand if my child makes the squad a deposit of $300.00 (cash or money order) is due at the first

parent meeting after tryouts, NO CHECK.

I understand by the very nature of the activity and the risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the

participant and coach are, how many spotters are used, or what landing surface is used, the risk cannot be

eliminated. I understand the risks stated above and will not hold accountable Carrizo Springs CSCISD or its

staff. If selected, I agree to abide by the dance team constitution.

Candidates will need to request a copy of their first semester report card from their counselor. The grade report

must be signed and dated by the counselor. The teachers listed on report will be asked to complete a teacher

evaluation on the applicant that will be added to the tryout scores.

Outlined below is the individual Varsity Account balance for EACH drill team member. This is for uniforms and other items. Carrizo Springs CISD will allow the team to order their uniforms to facilitate and benefit the entire group. In order to do this, we must have an agreement for a payment plan in place that is signed and agreed to by the parents.
